Why didn't you go for home premium or business? ultimate might add unneccesary stuff that might hog up a bit extra memory and processing, also you might want to get Windows 2008 Updates to be secure incase you're going to be using the internet for browsing or watching videos or anything related , although dont get the Spectre Updates if you decide to get the updates , it cuts around 25-30% cpu speed and considering you're already on 1.6ghz you wouldn't want that, It might a bit offtopic to what you asked but just a suggestion

    all we can do is wait and hope that moonchild supports vista as he himself clearly knows that vista and 7 are alike and little to no work is needed to get it working if im correct.

    moonchild did say vista wasnt compatible long time ago, but after he mentioned that their targetted kernel was 6 and above the questions were raised and he said "As for our support: support for features will be limited in Vista, but since it matches the minimum platform requirements there's no reason to change that on a per-application basis.
    UXP applications including Basilisk and Pale Moon 28 should continue to run on Vista in the foreseeable future." as you can see for yourself if you wish to. So it should be supported probably but no one really knows what will happen.

    It appears now that (despite features being limited on Vista) that Pale Moon 28 WILL run.  Perhaps Basilisk won't, but Pale Moon will.

    Now I'd like to find a way to get MP4 codecs works on the x64 production version.  :(

    Valve's announcement puts new weight to those arguments. The people playing games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein, games which do not run well (or at all) on OSes newer than XP, might back us up, but I think most of them just jury rig solutions to get those games running in Windows 10 or somesuch.

    There is a wiki list of games you can buy on Steam which do not actually require Steam to run, but many games will still launch the Steam app if you try to play them without Steam anyway. Still nice to know what you can still play even if Valve won't let you use Steam anymore.

    I recommend e-mailing Gabe Newell and proposing this to him. He keeps his e-mail address public, and in dev commentaries from Valve games he almost always mentions it: gaben AT valvesoftware DOT com. I'm going to be writing him an e-mail myself. Sure, the chances of him seeing the e-mails are slim, much less actually acting on our behalf. However, it doesn't hurt to try. The more he hears from people who will be affected by this, the more he might be inclined to throw XP (and Vista) users a bone.

    wont happen even if you email, even 150,000 people weren't enough to change valve's rules, we had a petition for cs:go in which 150k people signed it to bring a change in the trading and valve even saw it and replied its highly unlikely that the rule would be reverted, they dont really care anymore it seems :(

    the last topic we were talking about was about itunes working past its expiry date i.e 25th May , can someone reconfirm on XP if it still works?

Tested Couple Of Nvidia Drivers, 372.54 , 372.60 , 372.70  , 372.90 , 373.06 all of them have a Ntamd6.0 section with devices beforehand and should install out of the box but drivers after the version 372.70 simply dont work due to lack of dll/functions present in vista as we already know. So it is suggested to install 372.70 if needed for 10X  Series GFX Drivers as it is the last driver to unofficially work.

I've went ahead and added them to the list regardless, but I need to add that the .INF files need modification if that is indeed the case. I would test this myself but I can't at the moment.

    SUMMARY OF CHANGES TO THE LIST FOR JANUARY 31, 2018:

    • Added Skype v7.36.0.150 as the final version for Vista in "Instant messaging/internet communication" section.
    • Added NVIDIA Display Drivers version 372.54 to "NVIDIA Graphics Drivers" section.
    • Added How to Survive in "Games" -> "Last official release to run on Vista" section.
    • Added BeamNG.Drive, Fallout 4, and Fallout Shelter to (ONG) "Games" section.
    • Removed Skype from (ONG) "Instant messaging/internet communication" section.

    I will download the 372.54 and see and report back :) ( i do have the ones from softpedia that support vista, will still download from the official nvidia site)

    EDIT : IT DOES WORK WITHOUT MODIFICATION!!! to much shock,i think it might be the only official one unless the older ones do support it aswell.

    upload the inf file and your tell me your gfx device id from device manager,anyone can do it for you,maybe even me if i get the chance

    If the inf file does not have GTX 1060 should I do something in order to add it ? My question might sound stupid , but I am asking because I wonder in that case how will the system recognize a device which is not listed in the driver ?

    I read a few months here in this forum , in another topic , that from some point onward , the structure of the drivers changed radically . I can't remember the old and the new name , but they said something that in order to make the driver available fro WinXP there had to be done something equally radical . Of course I wish it to happen !

    And one last thing : how can I install an older version of drivers ? Just by double clicking the file like I normally do , or I must do something else ? Because up to now I have installed only drivers of later version .

    You need to add your device id into the inf file, it will use the GTX 1070 driver which is present. You can try double clicking and trying to install 368.81 it might install without any modifications, have a go at it. The Device will be used by 1070 Drivers mainly due to lack of 1060 drivers (cant confirm this for the driver 368.81). I suggest you try installing 368.81 normally and if it doesnt recognize your gfx then you might aswell consider modifying the inf (not that tough honestly)
    Installing old drivers should be fine,ive done it many times for testing purposes on vista. Also These Arent icafe drivers. If you're confused how to modify the inf file just google it (you will understand faster and easier).
    Also Thanks for testing this out it would confirm alot about the 10X GFX series

    And one more thing : I had tried the 368.91 drivers from iCafe , but the system still could not detect the GTX 1060 card . They did got installed (although there were some messages that poped-up (I can't remember if they were error messages because it's been a while since I installed them) , but the GTX 1060 card still remained an unknown device . Although the other card (the GTX 580) does work fine with these drivers .

    try the other ones? there are 368.69 and 368.81,ive modified the inf to support windows vista and they work, you could try the same and have some luck? the inf itself doesnt have GTX 1060(only 1080 and 1070). if you can try these then we can know for sure if XP would support these cards even a little. :)

    cant say for sure because no one here has a 1060gtx on windows xp, i think im the only one with 1060GTX on vista, go for a 970-980gtx i would highly recommend,the modded drivers will enable your gfx but will not utilize it more than 30-40%, unless you can find a way to do so im afraid,you could always try the 1060gtx and if it doesnt satisfy you, you can use windows 7+

    not possible, only the early 10x series are supported,because after the driver 372.70 the full support for vista has been dropped (supports 1080 1070 and 1060 only) that too a modified driver not officially supported.

    unless someone can modify it like this softpedia one its not possible, you can ofcourse try to install 1060GTX Drivers im quite sure it would work but dont expect any performance from it,you can expect some video playback and be able to play some low powered games it wont utilise your gfx like intended :)
