I haven't found a policy to restrict a media device to an account group, only to restrict it's use to the locally logged on user. gpedit > Windows settings > Security settings > Local policies > Security options

I don't think it's possible to apply policy per user, but you can set up the kids user account as limited. Also ntfs permissions can be set to restrict access to files & folders. Btw

You can add a logon script to your user profile.

I agree, hardware detection doesn't happen until the gui part of setup.

Yes that is unusual and may well be the cause of the startup problem. I don't have the means to test this but you should be able to reconfigure resources in device manager.

Yea, a reformat is the best option, being a Dell should mean it has it's own recovery disc. Remember to back up anything you want to keep first.

Have you tried booting to "Last Known Good Configuration"? If not, boot to safe mode, go to the device manager and try to reinstall the drivers for the above (I'm not sure what I2O Utility is though). If that doesn't work, boot to safe mode, insert your xp disc, open a cmd window & type sfc /scannow then reboot. Still no luck after that? Boot to your xp disc & do a repair install.

The latest updates don't require you to have the dvd in the drive when playing.
