My ThinkPad T42p has an Intel Gigabit Ethernet controller, here are the latest 98SE drivers for Intel LAN adapters: http://www.tmeeco.eu/9X4EVER/GOODIES/PRO98M.EXE Any Intel LAN chip that is not in the INF of these drivers will probably not work at all. My ASRock H110M-DVS R3.0 has an old enough revision of the generic Realtek gigabit chip that lucklily works with the official Realtek LAN drivers for 98SE. I haven't done any testing myself on either of these adapters in terms of speed. Maybe will do in the future. Have you tried using TCP Optimizer v. 3.08? You can use eGPU (either via ExpressCard or mini-PCI-E) to plug in a compatible GPU (like 7900 GTX) to a much newer laptop. All laptops using Broadwell or older CPU will have usable USB 2.0 ports which Windows 98 SE can use. Then you use cheap USB audio card for sound. For LAN, either find laptop with compatible Realtek chip or use USB Ethernet Card compatible with 98SE. For WiFi, use USB WiFi card that works with 98SE (might be limited to WPA1 only), such as Rosewill RNX-G1, TRENDnet TEW-424UB or USR5422. Of course you also need HIMEMX and rloew's RAM Patch (You can also use rloew's AHCI driver to avoid using IDE compatibility mode, you can also use the TRIM utility by rloew if planning on using an SSD) It's more flexible than trying to pinpoint a specific model. Windows ME uses the same exact video drivers as Windows 98SE, meaning that if the card would work on Windows ME, but not on 98SE, this would mean that there are no problems with the card, the drivers, or your PC. I've already seen from my experience things that worked on Windows ME, but not on 98SE. Testing on Windows XP would give us nothing as it uses totally different drivers. Also, does VBEMP work fine on that card?

Well, if the card would work on Windows ME, then it would mean that there is a problem with Windows 98SE, not the motherboard, or the GPU.

Have you tried flashing/modifying the BIOS of that card? I do not recall messing around with BIOS of that card to get it working. Also, on a side note, have you tried this card with Windows 98 First Edition, or Windows ME?

Even though a motherboard might support ACPI and 98SE, it's still recommended to install via "/p i" to disable it. Even IBM recommended that for their ThinkPads back in the day, with the T40, T41, T42 line of laptops. I suspect that problems might be caused by your GPU, can you try a different one compatible with 98SE? PCI-E compatible GPUs for 98SE include the GeForce 6000 series, and Radeon Xxxx series (X300, X550, X700, X800, X850). You can also try with a compatible PCI GPU (GeForce FX series, like FX5200 or FX5500)...or even a S3 Trio

Is the GeForce FX5200 a PCI card? Try re-installing 98SE with the "/p i" switch to disable ACPI, that might resolve some issues. Have you tried all PCI slots for the Sound Card/GPU? Hmm...it seems you might have a problem with MS-DOS prompts from inside Windows (which should not happen!), can you open MS-DOS Prompt from Start Menu fine? You can try messing around with ACPI/Power options in the BIOS.

I've tried installing .NET Framework 2.0 SP0 on 98SE myself and it worked fine. Maybe try re-downloading it? SATA Patch is NOT for AHCI mode, those are two different things. Using AHCI mode makes Windows 98 use the old legacy 16-bit disk access, Performance Tab in System control panel will inform you of that. Installing AHCI driver then gives you full protected 32-bit disk access, and Performance Tab will no longer complain. ESDI_506.PDR is not used at all. SATA Patch is for situations when using IDE legacy mode gives a black screen when 98SE tries to use the ESDI_506.PDR driver or if the motherboard has SATA ports with no options in BIOS to change SATA mode that results in black screen when 98SE tries to use the ESDI_506.PDR driver.
