Windows 98 - why the startup 'stops' 1 minute?
pangoomis replied to Joaquim's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Seeing as Windows ME does not have this issue, it might be possible to actually fix it for 98SE. But yes, buying the cheapest router from TP-Link or something, dedicated only to 98SE machines, is a better and more flexible solution. Used cheap routers are abundant and cost not much more than a few bags of chips and some soda -
Unable to open MS-DOS command prompt window with GeForce GTX 1660 Ti
pangoomis replied to halohalo's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Are you using VBEMP or the stock VGA.DRV driver? Try using SVGA driver from Win3.1 in Safe Mode like here: https://msfn.org/board/topic/69569-improving-windows-98-safe-mode Can you try a different motherboard? -
It seems VirtualBox authors are not keen on addressing the issue, and just tell users to use AC'97 on Windows XP: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=38886 https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/16609 Can you provide the device ID for the HD Audio that VirtualBox emulates?

Latest AMD GPU supported on XP is HD 7970 / 8970 OEM / R9 280X (all three have same device ID).

Is it possible to install Windows 1.01 without a floppy drive?
pangoomis replied to GD 2W10's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Take a look here: https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/Commodore_64_emulators As for the issue in topic, try putting all files from all disks to one giant folder and install from that folder using DOS...unless that's what you tried already. I know this trick works for Windows 3.1, not sure at all about older versions. You can also try different Windows 1 versions from WinWorld for example, maybe they behave differently. (like 1.04) I don't have any meaningful experience with Windows prior to 3.1, as there's no practical reason to use anything older than 3.1...unless someone really wants to stick to the 8088- 12 replies

Is it possible to install Windows 1.01 without a floppy drive?
pangoomis replied to GD 2W10's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Use 86Box or PCem for having fun with such old Windows versions. Both programs can emulate period-correct real hardware that Windows 1.01 will be happy to work with. This will make for a much better and fun experience than just forcing it to run on a real hardware. Also look here for some fun you can have with Windows 1: http://toastytech.com/guis/win1x2x.html- 12 replies

DOSSOUND is not a DOS driver for AC'97/HD Audio! It's just a custom interface/API to play WAV files (with example programs included), it doesn't work with any existing DOS programs as it does not provide any Soundblaster/OPL interface that programs can use. Useless in your case. There are no DOS drivers for AC'97/HD Audio! If there's no option to add some kind of a sound card like on a laptop (and if there's no LPT port to use something like OPL2LPT), best bet is to...use DOSBox under Windows 98 SE (as stupid as this idea sounds, I know )

I see that you've bought a wifi card that I recommended. It's weird that you don't have any networks listed. As others said, try the new wifi card using Windows 2000 or XP and see if the networks show up there. You can also try Debian from the Linux side of things. The "File is not installed" text in Device Manager is normal, I have it as well and Wi-Fi works fine regardless. Try also this older drivers for Windows 9x and see if the networks show up in Odyssey, maybe the latest one doesn't work with all Atheros cards... Also, have you connected the antennas to the WiFi card? Driver.zip

i can't find the Internet Explorer 6 language pack
pangoomis replied to Joaquim's topic in Windows 9x/ME
http://ftp.unicamp.br/pub/apoio/iexplorer/ie60sp1/ie60sp1.zip This seems to be a Portuguese version of IE6 SP1, try it. -
https://www.allbootdisks.com/download/98.html https://www.allbootdisks.com/download/me.html Use the "No Ramdrive" versions.

In Windows ME, you need to use MSConfig to set up DOS keyboard, there's no keyb command on ME, read here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/6029-dos-program-in-windows-me-problem/ Check if Spear of Destiny works fine on 98SE.

I never bothered with Min/MaxFileCache. PATCHMEM and ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 is enough, regardless of how much RAM you have.

Windows ME: why the wireless intel 2200BG is installed?
pangoomis replied to Joaquim's topic in Windows 9x/ME
INF files which are used to install drivers can work on multiple Windows versions (one INF file can support 98 SE, ME, 2000 and XP for example). This doesn't mean that the driver itself, which are the SYS files, will work. Intel forgot to disable support for Windows 98 SE/ME for the 2200BG in the INF file. Windows is naive and will process any INF file and its corresponding SYS files, as long as the INF is valid, even if SYS files won't work. Since the SYS file was not made for ME, it fails to load it, that's what causes the yellow ! icon. -
Installing (or reinstalling) IE6 should fix this, someone else had this issue before: http://www.techtalk.cc/viewtopic.php?p=18608#p18608

Just because a system file exists, doesn't mean that it has all the exports (functions) that a newer program expects from it. System files retained same names, but had new things added on it. Look here: http://kernelex.sourceforge.net/wiki/VLC_Media_Player
-
Yep, this card should work fine with these drivers: http://shell.stare.pro/~mrmateczko/Atheros_Wi-Fi_Win98SE_Latest.zip These are Atheros drivers I've found and packaged since they have been removed now from original place.

win98: how reboot more faster and turn off automatic?
pangoomis replied to Joaquim's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Two most common issues regarding long boot up times in 98SE: 1. DHCP - you must assign the IP address of the device manually in Network control panel rather than using DHCP as that cause a long delay in boot. I think this was fixed in Windows ME, but I'm not 100% sure. 2. Leaving USB flash drives plugged in when the unofficial USB drivers are installed. As for the shutdown problem, you can try these things: 1. Installing the Windows 98 SE Shutdown Supplement. 2. Reinstalling Windows 98 SE with the /p i switch to avoid installing buggy ACPI which may cause problems with shutdown. 3. If you have NVIDIA GPU, using the Shutdown Fix. 4. Using different unofficial USB drivers. -
This is a Windows 2000/XP driver, not for 98SE, it will most likely not work. You're mistaking Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 (which is 802.11b only, useless for today's Wi-Fi networks) that HAS Windows 98 drivers with the WiFi card that you have which is the Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (that is 802.11g, usable with today's modern 2,4GHz WPA2 Wi-Fi networks) that DOESN'T have Windows 98 drivers. Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG was a very popular Wi-Fi card back in the day included in many laptops. Many people tried using it with Windows 98, no one succeed. As I've said, ditch that Wi-Fi card and replace it with something like NKRCM9 or a similar one that has the Atheros 5004/5213 chipset. That's what I'm using and Odyssey Client works flawlessly with it.

Windows 95 2.1GHz CPU Limit BROKEN!
pangoomis replied to LoneCrusader's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Different link: http://lonecrusader.x10host.com/fix95cpu.html I think it should be included in the first post? -
That's not a wifi icon, that's the View Channels button linked to the Channel Bar and channels in general, heavily promoted with IE4 that came with 98 First Edition, 95 OSR2.5 and as a free download for 95. It was removed in 98 Second Edition from the Quick Launch, as the focus on the channels and channel bar seems to largely disappear once IE5 came. 98 SE does not show Channel Bar at the desktop by default for example.

Format the hard drive from the Win98 CD with the /S command so the hard drive becomes bootable with the DOS version from the Win98 CD. Make sure to check in FDISK if the partition is set to active. Then, copy the win98 folder from CD to the hard drive, and run the setup from the hard drive and not the CD. If there is still the same error, plug the hard drive to main PC (or in any other way) put HIMEMX.EXE on the root of it: https://sourceforge.net/projects/himemx/ and put DEVICE=C:\HIMEMX.EXE to CONFIG.SYS (create CONFIG.SYS if it doesn't exist). If HIMEMX.EXE doesn't solve the problem, try with the XMGR.SYS from here: http://optimizr.dyndns.org/dos/drivers.html

Try to install with the "/p i" switch as mentioned by SweetLow. It seems that you are using the unofficial repack of DOS 7.1. It has some bloatware. Why do you need DOS 7.1 in the first place? The OEM Full CD image is bootable and will install 98SE on a PC without any operating system. Delete all existing partitions, create and format a new clean one, just make sure the partition is less than 137GB.

Win 9x locale restrictions? (EU software on NA OS)
pangoomis replied to Tripredacus's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Best way is to check the setup executable/files and see if it makes any checks regarding system locale. Game/program boxes can lie! -
There are no Windows 9x drivers for Wireless 2200BG. End of story. For best results, replace your mini PCI wireless card in your laptop with something like NKRCM9 or a similar one that has the Atheros 5004/5213 chipset.
