  1. Can anyone verify (or refute) the report about removing the Win32 API? --JorgeA I can't verify anything, but I have read somewhere that "Microsoft plans to kill off the desktop by 2019". Sounds like about the same thing. -Noel
  2. Hmmm, pretty modern slang... LOL, love your graphic. I do learn SOME things from my son. -Noel
  3. I posted a fair bit of (tell it like it really is about Win 10, which unfortunately you could say is primarily negative) feedback over there, but the catalyst was a specific prolific poster. This is silly stuff - sorry, Tripredacus, and thanks, win2kreviver and Andre... Drew1903 insisted in spouting BS that Windows 10 is better and faster with the proof being, "if you run an internet speed test you'll find that it runs faster in a Win 10 VM than on the host Win 8.1 system". That is just wrong on so many levels. I did the test, did not get his result (big surprise), posted a screen grab of my result, and asked him to repeat his test and show a screen grab of his results. I used wording like "picture or it didn't happen", which he took as a personal insult and got all whiney with the forum moderator. It seems that being the boy who points out that the Emperor has no clothes isn't what it used to be. -Noel
  4. Hm, it looks like it might be stored in the actual shortcut file (e.g., CMD.lnk) from which I started the window. Edit: And it appears specified properly in there. I haven't had any luck being able to get it to change. Here's hoping Microsoft will fix it. -Noel
  5. Win 10 has a problem where you can't select the Raster Fonts - 10 x 18 size presently. I was looking to see if the problem is just in the UI and if the proper stored CMD window font setting is made in the registry or file it might be made to work. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing so far where the CMD window font info is stored. I've got a few tricks left to try, but I was wondering if anyone here knows already where to look? -Noel
  6. I think it's way cool that Big Muscle built in a fallback that tries to give the proper effects (albeit with some artifacts) at all. Win 10 build 10049 symbols should show up soon... Seems like, since the Theme Atlas was essentially untouched, that Microsoft is slowing down the changes to the UI handling, which is good news - it implies that Aero Glass for Win 10 will be a workable reality. I know I wouldn't touch the thing if it couldn't be reskinned. -Noel
  7. You'll be interested to know I've been banned from the Microsoft forum. Apparently, providing evidence that certain whiny individuals are being untruthful in their glowing comments about Windows 10 is just too much for Microsoft to handle. -Noel
  8. Except that there's not 50 shades. More like about 7. -Noel
  9. That strategy is not a lot different from that which I listed in the OP. You didn't mention thinking before doing, but I'm guessing you do. -Noel
  10. Haven't seen any tweaks so far. Windows 10 doesn't seem to be big on giving options. -Noel
  11. Maybe he read it before it was deleted. I did. Edit: I remember reading a thread about Windows being "God Awful". I only assume it was the one in question. Given that a lot of folks feel pretty strongly that might not be a valid assumption. -Noel
  12. Frustrated graffiti artist, Mike? In all seriousness, where are the settings for making Spartan more secure? I've briefly tested it with several sites and a couple of them reported it was less secure than IE (with my settings to lock it down better than default). -Noel
  13. Honestly, I just think they mindlessly delete posts when other people complain (i.e. by pressing the Report button). Maybe they delete entire threads when people complain about the initial post. There's plenty of criticism that's not deleted, if the user doesn't write it like a raving madman. -Noel
  14. That would make sense. We are no longer the customers. We are the sheep to be fleeced. Apparently more execs at Microsoft want to be able to buy basketball teams, countries, space stations... -Noel
  15. Same behavior as with build 10041 at first. Let's hope this time when the symbols download it just starts working, vs. crashing as it did with 10041. FYI, though I haven't had time to do a detailed check, the theme atlas resources seem to be in the same places as with build 10041. -Noel
  16. Yeah, and at this point I think at this point few people at Microsoft seem to be able to draw those lines. Or maybe they draw them and just stay away from the hard core OS side. Anyone notice that, except for the UI, Win 10 has been pretty much stable throughout the pre-release program (I mean regarding crashes, losing data, etc.)? Ask yourself, "why would that be?" Incredible care and diligence on the part of Microsoft to keep from releasing an OS with partially completed or untested kernel changes? Clearly, by looking at the other half-baked things being sent out that's not in their nature. They may not even be able to manage what they're doing at that level any more, based on what we see. No, it's because they're just not making substantive changes at that level. Probably they know they've no longer got the expertise to do hard core OS stuff. So what to do? Play only with the UI and bundled applications. -Noel
  17. "Thanks for noticin' me." The thing *I* am noticing is that hardly anyone seems moderate about Windows 10 any more. There's an almost fanatical devotion shown by a few, and a fair bit of "I hate..." going on. People seem to want to polarize and to assign others to "camps". And it feels like it's getting more frenetic. Forum moderation is reaching new levels... "In reply to deleted post" is now seen more and more. Very Interesting indeed, the level of crowd dynamics with regard to a piece of software. I guess it shows us just how "personal" the P in PC is. People actually seem to resent Microsoft for changing things they are used to. It's easy to understand why, but you'd think Microsoft was attacking some people's children or spouse the way they react. Perhaps the most surprising thing to me is that some of the folks upset that things they're used to are being changed or removed adamantly won't open their minds even a little bit to accomplishing the same things using 3rd party software. -Noel
  18. The Windows 8 native Calc desktop application CAN'T be maximized - that's why. I'm sorry I can't offer a suggestion about how to correct or work around the problem. -Noel
  19. Not seeing any file at the link you posted. Hate to bring up the possibility, but garbled characters in a log file implies possible file system problems. You might want to look in your Windows Event Log - System for any errors or warnings that might indicate disk problems. If and only if you see no indications of disk failure there, you might consider running a CHKDSK on the drive. -Noel
  20. I rather like it, but some might not... -Noel
  21. Yes, there are thumbnails, big ones. I don't mind the thumbnails myself. What was getting me was that the "Task View" switcher in prior Win 10 builds completely wiped out the desktop, replacing it with ONLY the big thumbnails. -Noel
  22. I must say, I'm really happy to see Win 10's most recent Alt-Tab treatment... Now they open a partially transparent panel that doesn't cover the entire desktop, and they most certainly don't have a "Desktop" entry in there - AWESOME! -Noel
  23. Per the press releases and pundits, I haven't gotten the impression they're planning on releasing any further major updates to any older OS. Or maybe not unless they see Win 10 flop and change their direction. -Noel
  24. Mike13, did you see... http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173660-anti-malware-suggestions/ -Noel
