Look in your debug.log if you're using the debug version for Win 10... [2015-03-18 09:57:00][0x3B8:0xB0C] Aero Glass for Win8.1 v1.3.2 DEBUG x64 correctly loaded (C:\AeroGlass\DWMGlass.dll). -Noel

Yes, I prefer Classic Shell, in Classic Style mode. Just cascading menus. -Noel

Type the following into the address bar of IE: about:flags If you enable the Experimental Web Platform Features, I believe you'll be using the Spartan engine. -Noel

Looks like it needs some caption button work, though (noting that there's a "restore" type icon in place of the [ X ]). -Noel

Some Disturbing Cloud-Based Windows Update Stuff in 10041
NoelC replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
Right. In that case you'd use the (non-default) PCs on my local network setting. But that last one, configured as the default... Not cool. And it's still not clear how these settings affect your being the SERVER of other folks' Windows Updates. -Noel -
I'm sure Big Muscle is looking into what's changed. I hope that the feedback we've provided helps him. Thanks for the info that 1.3.1 works. As I've got 1.3.2 now more or less working stably with it, as mentioned above, I'll probably just stay on that until he's got a new update. At this point I also have UxThemeSignatureBypass64.dll in place, which corrects the text color on ribbon enabled windows, and also ModernFrame.dll, which "Aero Glasses" the title bars of ApplicationFrameHost-based Metro/Modern windows. The fact that all these things work and Aero Glass mostly works even after two months between Windows builds says Microsoft has entered a time where they're no longer making big changes to the UI, and what we see (disappointing as it may be) may be pretty close to what gets released. -Noel

I asked in another thread... You have it working on 10041? For me it almost worked, while the symbols weren't available. Then once it downloaded the symbols it just entered a DWM restart loop. By the way, I can force it back into a partially working state by corrupting the content of the dwmcore.pdb file, so that it again executes its fallback logic after a bit of a timeout. Big Muscle, this may help you narrow down where the problem is. -Noel

My understanding (though I don't use the Microsoft Start Menu) is that they've added partial transparency to the parts of the Start Menu that lie between the menu entries and tiles. As though that would placate the thousands requesting Aero Glass capability. It's just more FUD from Microsoft, who at times seem to be following a philosophy of "do what we want, listen to feedback that already matches our grand plan, and meet any criticism with obfuscation". -Noel
-
DP, Aero Glass is working okay for you? Has it not downloaded the symbols from online yet? -Noel

Consider me ignorant, then. I did not know it was possible to get an MD5 checksum for the legitimate ISO from Microsoft and compare it with that being offered. Carry on. -Noel

Some Disturbing Cloud-Based Windows Update Stuff in 10041
NoelC replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
The second consideration, besides whether Windows Update gets data from some other computer, is what about when YOU become "the other computer"? I am not paying for my internet service in order to provide Windows Update data to my neighbors. I would not tolerate other traffic getting in the way of the things I need my network connection to do. -Noel -
One of the reasons Microsoft gets away with as much as they do is because there are people who don't know or can't perceive the difference. -Noel

Some Disturbing Cloud-Based Windows Update Stuff in 10041
NoelC replied to NoelC's topic in Windows 10
For what it's worth, yet another reboot seems to have solved the Defender update issue. The process, however, is flakey as shit. -Noel -
Maybe I'm a bit too much of an alarmist, but... I really, REALLY don't like what I'm seeing in the Windows Update process in build 10041. 1. Upon checking for updates Windows downloaded the fbl_Impressive 10041 Professional update AGAIN, after I had already successfully installed it. 2. I now have a reported failure to install a Windows Defender update (Definition 1.193.3192.0), and there's no way to tell the system to move on and ignore it. It just sits there re-reporting failure over and over. 3. I went looking for whether they've added any way to control updates with more detail, and found none, but I *did* find something disturbing: What the heck is this about? Are we seriously to believe that Windows is turning into a bit torrent-like system, redistributing its updates from PC to PC? You can see that I deconfigured it. Does anyone here think that having Windows automatically install software obtained from someone else's computer might be a problem? But nooooo, we shouldn't worry. Everyone will surely respect Microsoft's need to offload their servers by pitching in a bit of their own bandwidth, and of course we know all of the processes in Windows are PERFECTLY secure, right? -Noel

Thanks for the link, xper. For me the fbl_impressive 10041 Professional update has started downloading for a second time, even though it went in successfully the first time. What's another 3 GB of network data? Maybe once that settles down maybe I'll download the ISO file. Edit: No, I am not interested in downloading a Windows ISO from a source other than Microsoft (and I would suggest others avoid doing so as well). I didn't realize the link pointed to a non-Microsoft host. -Noel

Frankly, other than more reorganization of control panel stuff I'm not seeing anything to write home about at all. I don't use Metro/Modern Apps, save for a few quick tests. Those I've started seem the same.I don't use the Windows Start Menu at all, so I don't care what they're doing there. At the moment my Windows Update process is broken somehow, so I can't say they've made any improvements there. The theme atlas is *almost* the same as with build 9926, and BM's Aero Glass for Win 8+ *almost* works. It's clear to me that they're not making any more big changes. I imagine they're near a code freeze, as at least one Microsoft talking head has implied the release will be moved up to Summer. Edit: Fixed the Windows Update issue. I had experimented with Group Policy at one point, and back in build 9926 it was ineffective so I accidentally left it disabled. At least they made the current Windows Update process work with Group Policy now. Hate to say it, but I still don't see any way to manage individual Windows Updates. I see another entry, for example, called fbl_impressive 10041 Professional, and sure enough it appears to be downloading the whole thing again. Oops there goes another 3 gigabytes... -Noel

I hear ya. When you see that even the boasts that Windows 8 and newer are faster are just so much BS it becomes all too clear that Microsoft stopped doing work useful to serious computer users after Windows 7. Yet to this day people emphatically claim Win 10 is faster. Maybe for them installing a new OS solved some driver problem or whatnot and the occasional claim is legitimate microscopically - but it's not representative of things in general. Or maybe for most folks a new install is just faster than an old, loaded-up, misconfigured, half-broken OS installation it's replacing. -Noel

I have already got a version of my "gel buttons" theme atlas adapted. http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/Win10/10041/RoundedCorners.png What I do to try to locate what resource composites where is overlay the theme atlas with a colored gradient. Then using the AeroGlass GUI tool I just type a blank at the end of the theme atlas name and delete it, which causes the graphic resources to be reloaded. Once the gradient has been loaded, you can look at the colors that show up on various controls and in various places (ideally take a screen grab) and correlate them to the positions in the theme atlas graphic. Good luck and have fun! -Noel

Well, that went wrong rather quickly. As soon as Aero Glass got the proper symbols downloaded this morning, DWM went into a restart loop. Here are some pertinent files that may help you find the problem, Big Muscle: http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/Win10/10041/debug.log http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/Win10/10041/minidump-03-19-10-25-54.dmp http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/ForumPosts/Win10/10041/minidump-03-19-10-25-42.dmp I'll experiment with it some more to make sure it's not something I'm causing somehow. -Noel

It's just so much BS. Yes, build 10041 came out today for "Fast" ring participants. It's probably not a noticeable difference in performance. Though I haven't been running with UAC off recently, I had no problem running the things you mentioned with EnableLUA set to 0. Caveat: The Apps of course wouldn't run, but all the Settings stuff did. I thought maybe you were reporting something new about build 10041. I am now up and running - including Aero Glass (mostly) - on 10041. My quick suite of performance tests show a general degradation in performance of about 3% since version 9926. And for some reason at the moment Windows Update is completely non-functional, claiming my system admin has disabled it. I'll need to try disabling UAC on this one and see what happens. -Noel

Well, it's not as bad as I first thought. The symbols can't be downloaded yet, but whatever fallback search algorithm Big Muscle implemented seems to work! I have Aero Glass in Win 10 build 10041! Life is getting better. The theme atlas is very little different, and I've already got a draft of my gel button version going. Now I have to try to find the new parameter Big Muscle added to override the border sizes. I didn't document it and I've lost track of what thread it's in. Edit: Found - http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173379-windows-10/page-7#entry1093671 Big Muscle, perhaps if you get a moment consider adding the FrameMargin setting to your user documentation on: http://www.glass8.eu/guide.html -Noel

So... Another Win 10 build, number 10041, is upon us. And just when we had the prior build working so smoothly with Aero Glass and all the other programs necessary to make it reasonable to work with. Sigh. Big Muscle, as always, post if you need help, info, testing, etc. -Noel
