    DVD player

Advantages + disadvantages of using dvdplay.exe in Windows 98/98 SE: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip16.htm#FDP IMO: I use PowerDVD 5.0 [$$$ = not free]: http://www.cyberlink.com/multi/products/main_1_ENU.html Best full featured DVD player I know of. PowerDVD 4.0 works great with older hardware in my experience. WinDVD is also decent, but also $$$ [not free]: http://www.intervideo.com/WinDVD/ HTH
  5. You've read my mind. Thanks for the guide to advantages of using Windows 98 SE.
  6. Rick Chauvin: 1. Please note that by installing 98MP10.EXE: http://www.mdgx.com/wmp.htm#98MP10 [which among other files] installs the WinXP SP1 version of BROWSELC.DLL 6.00.2800.1106 , the OS may recover *only* in certain situations [?] from such lockups, but this is uncertain, because I haven't done enough testing. 2. Please note that by using the 2 older DLLs from IE 5.5 SP1 [bROWSELC.DLL 5.50.4807.2300 + BROWSEUI.DLL 5.50.4807.2300] with IE 6.0 SP1, as you state at your page [among many other people who offer the same workaround]: http://www.rdchauvin.com/W98xIE6xBug.htm IE 6.0 SP1 loses certain functionality, which is otherwise built into the newer IE 6.0 SP1 DLLs. But what is more important, by using the older BROWSEUI.DLL 5.50.4807.2300 with IE 6.0 SP1, all security vulnerabilies that were fixed by M$ in all newer versions are *lost* , thus exposing the OS to all those security risks. Please note that the OS is still exposed to most IE security risks even if using any other web browser [Firefox, Mozilla/Gecko, Netscape, Seamonkey, Opera, IE "skins" like Maxthon/Avant etc] to surf the internet, because of implementation of M$ "browser integration", which forces the OS to use IE DLLs for internet/network access, no matter which browser engine is used. IMO: If using IE 6.0 SP1, you have 2 solutions: 1. Uninstall IE 6.0 SP1 and then (re)install IE 5.5 SP1 [which as I mentioned above at #2] exposes the OS to security risks. But please note that M$ does not issue any fixes/patches for any IE build other than 6.0 SP1, thus leaving IE 5.5 SP1 and all other older builds unpatched, and therefore exposed to security risks. 2. Or: - if using Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE: install SHELL98.EXE = installs SHELL32.DLL 4.72.3812.620 fix - if using Windows ME: install SHELLME.EXE = installs SHELL32.DLL 5.50.4134.120 fix and *never* move/copy/delete/rename large amounts of files/folders when USER resources drop at ~ 30% or below [not recommended anyway]. First reboot to recover USER resources back to normal values, if you need to perform such "en masse" file/folder manipulation chores. This way all IE 6.0 SP1 security patches are up to date: http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm#BRO and the OS is far less exposed to known security risks. HTH

  13. To my knowledge file + printer sharing is tied into NetBios.More info: http://www.pc-help.org/www.nwinternet.com/...ues/sharing.htm Therefore you cannot use shares [$file +/- $printer] if you disable NetBios. Also, vnbt.386 is specific to the 9x OS edition. The 1 from 98/98 SE doesn't work with ME nor the other way around. So you can disable NetBios 3 ways [but this will also disable file + printer sharing]: 1. Follow this guide: http://www.mdgx.com/newtip19.htm#INS 2. Follow this guide: http://www.grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm 3. Use the Noshare.exe "patching" tool posted above by sam13484. Please keep in mind that file + printer sharing is a serious security vulnerability if you don't know what you're doing or if you are careless: http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/netbios.htm Your choice. 15. Shell32.dll is flawed no matter which/how many service pack(s) and/or unofficial updates/patches/replacements/etc you installed. All that matters is if you installed IE [internet Explorer] 5.5 SP2, 6.0 or 6.0 SP1. All these web browsers are flawed [because of M$ integration ], therefore you need to install SHELL98.EXE [fixed shell32.dll] in order to fix the flaw. COPY2GB.EXE fixes an entirely different matter: http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=81200 *but* this new SHELL32.DLL *also* fixes this bug [see forum topic above]. HTH [Hope This Helps] ____________________________________ Yes, it seems the "Anonymous author" made some mistake.I just tried to load this file by Heaventools PE Explorer (not free), saved it, the size has decreased and Restorator works fine. The best would be if MDGx could ask "Anonymous author" to repair the shell32.dll file, I'm not sure that shell32.dll repaired by PE Explorer is 100% functional (I have not tested it) Petr Edit: I have tried to use shell32.dll patched by "Anonymous author", re-saved by PE Explorer and all resources replaced by Czech resources by Restorator and the system booted and did not crashed (yet). No deep testing. Anonymous author's answer: HTH____________________________________ Anonymous author's answer: HTH

  20. PROBLEMCHYLD: I have removed WinME IPROP.DLL from options 1 + 2. HTH
  21. Sorry, dude, just ignore my post.

  23. I'm not sure. These are the ones I have [using getver.exe = http://lbrisar.htmlplanet.com/e_cmd32.html#getver]: IPROP.DLL 4.0.1381.326 stamp 11-18-1999 96016 Bytes = from WinNT4 SP6a IPROP.DLL 4.0.1381.4 stamp 6-8-2000 110592 Bytes = from WinME CD-ROM [identical with the 1 from Win98 SE CD-ROM] IPROP.DLL 4.0.1381.6 stamp 8-20-1997 96016 Bytes = from DCOM98 If 326 is considered greater than 4 [as in 004] or than 6 [as in 006], you're right, 326 is newest. [?] But if 6 [as in 600] is considered greater than 326, the 1 from official DCOM98 is newest. [?] So which way is the right way? Does anybody have any ideas how this actually works? Thanks in advance. ______________________________ You don't.To my knowledge this is not possible [yet]. Too many WinME system files dependencies. And I'm sure if it can be done, the entire procedure will be posted here. HTH
  24. Didn't want to open a new topic for this, so here it is... I found an overclocking USB mouse driver for 98SE and it seems it also works with WinME [and all other NTx Win32 OSes]. Found here: http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679 File [386 KB, English + Russian]: http://sweetlow.at.tut.by/download/hidusbf.zip Mouse drivers web site [Russian]: http://www.overclockers.ru/lab/15925.shtml Make sure you read README.ENG.TXT [English] or README.RUS.TXT [Russian] first. Have fun.
  25. No matter how one "tweaks" the NVidia Forceware INFs, the drivers are completely different: - NTx [2000/XP/2003/Vista] = NTx core specific, WDM model [*.SYS]. - 9x [95/98/ME] = 9x core specific, VXD model [*.VXD]. Therefore trying to install NTx drivers on a 9x OS [or the other way around] will not work. Besides, 9x Oses support PCIx graphics interface only if specific motherboards/chipsets [+ eventually with specific drivers] are used. [?] But there are 9x drivers for some GeForce Go cards [except 7xxx/8xxx series] at NVidia: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp Latest build is 81.98: http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_81.98.html These are the GPUs these drivers support [no PCIx]: http://www.nvidia.com/object/81.98_9x_supported.html You can open NVAGP.INF in Notepad for additional details. Look under the [strings] section. Even newer drivers here [82.16 = supports GeForce 7xxx series]: http://www.bfgtech.com/7800GS_256.html P.S.: TurboCache is PCIx specific, and because NVidia never made PCIx drivers for 9x OSes, TurboCache doesn't work with 9x OSes.
