  1. Another 'final fetishist' raises their head and only 75 minutes after a new release........
  2. Ok, in the 'Remove Components' section of nlite, I can select "Manual Install and Upgrade" for deletion to save (according to nlite) 44.0 Mb of space. Looking at my I386 source and adding up the *UPG dirrectories, I come up with a hair over 37Mb of space. What else is nlite deleting and are any changes being made to .sif files (or anything really) to support the removal?? thanks!
  3. It's been a while since I've been in here and was wondering what is working and what isn't in terms of nlite-applied tweaks. thanks
  4. There is an established procedure, documented in the resourc kit, on how to swap out th euniprocessor HAL for the SMP HAL. Do this BEFORE you move the boot disk to the new machine. You will also want to pre-install all necessary drivers for the new mobo, chipset, video, sound, etc, etc.
  5. If you have access to a 'free' agp card, then why not get a new mobo and cpu then? You can commonly get 64 bit (maybe even an x2) Intel or AMD cpu and mobo 'upgradekits' for under $200-. Some of those upgrade kits use mobos that have respectable on-board video. Used to be that on-board video was a joke. Recent integrated graphics chipsets from Nvidia and Ati are actually pretty good. At least that way, you'll be putting your limited money into a Vista-ready PC and not trying to push the life of an obsolete POS.
  6. Ah, noobies with a high pressure air hose. -or_ Noobies who change out their CPU without knowing how to access their BIOS or what the settings mean. Fun to watch, isn't it?
  7. There are some mobos that support 2x and 4x interleave on memory modules. If you have one of those, go for the 4x modules instead of teh 2x. In the case of a 4x interleave, the reduced T2 timings will be made up for by the multiple byte/word interleave r/w access times.
  8. I don't that that VMWare officially supports anything older than NT4 and even that is even money on whether or not it will work reliably. Silly poll.......
  9. Why would you want to download this from anywhere but microsoft? Anyone who downloads OS hotfixes from rapidshare is opening themselves up to all kinds of problems. get 'em from MS.
  10. Quad cores are due from both AMD and Intel this November. Intel has also updated their Duo chipsets (3 different models, all to rev2) to take care of some nasty memory module compatibility problems.
  11. USB2 is pretty quick, but study after study shows that for random r/w disk operations, firewire kills USB2 by a minimum of 25%. In straight sequential reads (such as reading camera cards or a cd/dvd optical disk), things even out some but 1394 is still faster. For a USB box it's easy enough to 'roll your own' with a 44 pin ATA flash drive and an external case. I'm looking for something faster than I could get using flash memory disk emulators. This points to something internal on IDE or external on firewire assuming that the base memory tech is DDR and not flash.
  12. Ah, my first sentance/first post says that I've already found the gigabyte ramdisk card, that one requires the use of an SATA connector in addition to the PCI card slot both fo which I'd really like to avoid using. Anyone else??
  13. Ok, is there any way to split image and web page caching from cookie caching? I'm takling different directories on different drives. thanks
  14. Ok, I've found the gigabyte SATA ramdisk ($150!!) and loads of flash memory DOM IDE solid state disk that could easily be used as ramdisks (except for the obvious flash memory read-write cycle limitations). Does anyone know of a PCI card ramdisk that takes standard DDR modules and uses an IDE cable connection? I'd just as soon not use SATA or a software-driver based ram disk. Thanks!
  15. here is the straight Athlon info from AMD: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Produc...5_13041,00.html http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Produc...85_9488,00.html http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/Produc...85_9487,00.html http://www.amdcompare.com/us-en/desktop/Default.aspx
  16. most mobo beepers are soldered in, no possibliity to 'unplug' them...... I wonder if I could redefine 'beep' events and map them to a .wav like th erest of MS sounds. It looks like a simple 'net stop beep' takes care of things. Annoyances.org gives up a few interesting hints about where to dig into the registry to fiddle with HKCU/AppEvents. This looks like something I can play with in a live system as long as I keep a few notes as I go. If it can be made to work, this might be a new tweak for Nuhi to integrate.......
  17. Has anyone done this? What does it affect other than (obviously) the system beep? Can I still get system beeps through the sound card? thanks!
  18. Some speculation..... http://blogs.zdnet.com/Bott/?p=84
  19. You call that a review? The 'reviewer' did nothing but step through the config and action screens in nlite. No reports on 'speed', reduced ISO size, etc, etc. Oh, we did get some screen shots. This is not a knock on nlite, it's a knock on the no-brain who passed off 15 minutes of play time as a review.
  20. I'd say that anyome who calls himself 'computerMan' and decides to force i/o cards into incompatible slots is setting himself up for what he deserves.
  21. This pack supports Matrox products from G200 (NOT including the Marvel cards) to G550 for Win2k, XP, and Server 2003. http://www.matrox.com/graphics/support/dri...p2k_596_004.cfm ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/archive/2kxp...tes_593_009.txt ftp://ftp.matrox.com/pub/mga/archive/2kxp...p2k_596_004.exe
  22. How about this: Move all of the Creative Labs drivers from the B pack into the A pack. Add all Turtle Beach drivers (Audio Advantage, Montego, Catalina, Rivera) to the A pack. Perhaps designating the B pack for notebook and/or niche drivers and the A pack for the more common/popular/desktop drivers might be one way to organize the sound packs. The 3 video packs are currently, loosly, organized this way (and MANY MANY thanks for that!!!).
