Nice job, AnX, this is good to know. It’s been a while since I set up a Windows 2000 computer for surfing the web, but I definitely plan to do so in the near future, and it sounds like Avast! is just about the only game in town for anti-virus. Glad to help you out. Avast!, along with Malware Defender (available on windows2000.tk) and MBAM make a good security wall. I also recommend Advanced SystemCare 6. One more issue: The network status in Windows 2000 for some reason has stopped working.... I tried to start the service, but it gives an error. Strange. Well, it isn't interfering with the Internet, so I'll let it be for now. I'll do a reinstall next month.

Mostly Avast! has troubles with Visual C++ Runtime errors. They pop up on the daily version, and the CPU is throttled literally like a racecar, but it is very well behaved on the weekly. No errors at all. OR could it be because I've UPGRADED avast 7 to 8? I have to further investigate. UPDATE: That was it! The fact that I've upgraded avast! 7 to 8 was the reason it's working. I've tested the weekly just now on a VM and a direct install of avast 8! And the Visual C++ errors popped up again! So our only solution is to install avast 7.0.1483 and upgrade it to version 8. And on stock Win2k avast! 8 works by itself like a dream. I need to test UUR 10d, also. Stock Win2k seems to have better compatibility than it used to have, now. MAJOR EDIT: I've figured it ALL out. The problem is the avast! Software Updater. It is responsible for all of the errors and CPU throttles. Basically it's a tool to ensure your software is up to date. It is unnecessary, anyway. It is obviously conflicting with the Unofficial MS Visual C++ 2010. So all UURs have this problem. No problem, uninstall it using the avast! installer.

So, in conclusion, we only need Firewall and AdBlock on a Windows 98 machine? AV is really not necessary?
-
Do you have an InsydeH20 BIOS? If it's an HP/Compaq then it definitely does. The BIOS restricts Windows 2000 on multicore systems. You need a PC with a different BIOS.

Well, I'll tell you. I love that program but I'm a little worried about using it now because I did it a few times on a Windows 2000 machine and after rebooting, I'd get a blue screen saying Invalid License Key or something to that effect. It basically ruined my install. That was probably about a year and a half ago but I haven't tried it since. Can you verify that this works flawlessly and won't ruin my install? Well, I'm running the latest version of Malwarebytes on the weekly March 23, 2013. Avast! 8 works on this, too. However avast! 8 has major problems on daily.
-
A little off topic of what's going on, but I have the latest Avast 8 on the weekly (March 23, 2013) UUR 11. When I tried with the daily, it gave me runtime errors and throttled my CPU like a racecar. But on weekly, stable and the stock Win2k, it works just fine.

Always Welcome. Oh and tomasz86, Chrome 25 fixes most of these bugs.
-
Chrome works great on my Win2k system. It works better than Firefox did. And yes, it seems that Intel Graphics are conflicting on PAE systems. Instead of Windows Defender, you can use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.
-
Did you install it the right way? You have to extract the daily, go to the update folder, and start setup from there. You'd want weekly, since its more tested.

Any hope of getting Windows 2000 running on my PC?
AnX replied to Brahnix's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Alright, let's get back to where we were. After UUR weekly, First, get avast 7.0.1473. Then get Malware defender from http://www.windows2000.tk programs list. Install it and disable ALL protection EXCEPT network protection (We only need Firewall). Disable Learning Mode. Then, install Advanced SystemCare from IOBit and CCleaner. Install Latest firefox and disable hardware acceration by going to Tools>Options>Enable Hardware Acceleration when possible Install Flash (flash will still use hardware acceleation) Install what you like. Then, we should have a good Win2K machine. -
I think that it would be good to start a new topic in the Hardware section and ask for such an utility for new Intel processors. Maybe someone will come up with something I wouldn't delete it myself... I don't really know how the system will work without SFC.DLL. I'm going to experiment with the registry later without modifying the DLL itself. First of all, I'd suggest replacing WTSAPI32.DLL and WINSTA.DLL in "%WINDIR%\SYSTEM32" with their original Windows 2000 versions to check whether they are the culprit. The XP files were added some time ago to fix the TeamViewer related issue. I deleted it and the system failed. So I reinstalled Windows. I'm still using the special trick to prevent sfc.dll from being scanned. Please, make an SFC.dll that avast! does not suspect. I'm now on weekly UUR BTW.

Could anyone else confirm? I've got two printers installed and haven't experienced any problems with choosing the default one. No problems here... But I'd appreciate a Speedstep-like utility... I've done lots of searching on Google and found absolutely nothing. The closest match was RightMark CPU, but that doesn't do anything... I also deleted sfc.dll since avast was always complaining... It's not needed, right?

Microsoft Windows 98 to recognize Dual-Core processors (project?)
AnX replied to ohmss006's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Then why is m Win2K system's task manager showing both cores? The PROBLEM was that the task manager was set to One Graph, all CPUs, insted of one graph PER CPU. Windows 2000 supports multicore fine and all. -
I can't find apps for my Intel machine. Sometimes I wish I ordered an AMD. The driver doesn't work. like I said, it is for laptops only.

Windows 2000 on a Acer Aspire One AO532h
AnX replied to Agorima's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
I've done some research. It has to do with your InsydeH20 BIOS. This BIOS expects Intel SpeedStep driver loaded with the CPU driver for dual core or HT support. Win2K doesn't have Speedstep built in. Try and install a speedstep driver and then see if you can enable both cores. -
Do you know any possible way to enable SpeedStep (I don't need this since I want full performance at all times) but just out of curiosity, since there are no drivers for speedstep.

Any hope of getting Windows 2000 running on my PC?
AnX replied to Brahnix's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
You shouldn't have installed that!!!! UUR has the Application Compatibility Launcher and the KDW built in. You will have to reinstall Windows. -

You should use Version 7 of avast. That works properly in Win2k. What do you mean by "KernelEX"? If you have installed UUR weekly, then you should never install any Kernel Extensions. UUR already has the extensions. For a good firewall you can use Malware Defender (located at http://windows2000.tk in the Programs section). Also, have you tried standby? Does Win2k remain stable after it? -
About the SFC thing, it is possible to disable it via registry hack. In the Windows NT>CurrentVersion>Winlogon, there is a string called SFCDisable. You input "ffffff9d" into the string, and it's disabled. No need for a potential false positive.

I have solved the MEI driver issue. All it took was to copy the hardware IDs to the Win2k section and it works great.
-
This is why BWC said to reinstall the ACPI Multiprocessor PC driver in the first place. To install the new hal.dll! This is required in order for the HD Graphics to work. And both in the Driver Cache and in system32, my hal.dll is 5.0.2195.7011 (the new one) because I reinstalled the driver. Plus one more thing, is it possible for me to shift from March 19th daily to the latest weekly?
-
I modified the .inf of the MEI driver so it runs on Win2K. I copied the XP hardware IDs to Win2k section.

AnX replied to Brahnix's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Well, it's either Win2K or Windows 7 then... Your choice -
I'm still on March 19 Daily. And for a good reason too, now! I'll wait till one without a problem comes, and then, I'll install it. And as for the Sound Recorder, it doesn't work no matter what, so I'll just use WavePad Sound Editor.

Remove RAID and all that, Just install Windows 2000 on the HDD on one partition, and Win7 on the other.
