  1. Resource Monitor => Memory is better for understanding this stuff: Private = amount of physical memory in use by the process that can not be used by other processes. Shareable = amount of physical memory in use by the process that can be shared with other processes. Working set = Private + Shareable. Commit size = Think of it as 'potential pagefile usage' (if there was such one present). The best indicator of the practical impact a single process has on memory is private. Haynes Hint - Hover mouse on things and they will self-explain :
  2. ^ When I read this my first thought was "they're repressing dissidence again by deleting 'troublesome' posts" (that forum is in MS pocket). But nope, if I click on the link now it goes directly to that post, so dunno. Try this one. Never mind, the usability of this forum's interface is an extenuating circumstance for any quoting crime perpetrated.
  3. For the sake of Se7en users, the above might be applicable to W7 systems if you've ever installed Windows Live Essentials 2011 or the Bing Bar.
  4. Speaking of lab rats, here's an epic post I found somewhere else: http://www.overclock.net/t/1583423/tt-windows-7-users-arent-budging-despite-free-windows-10-upgrade/200_100#post_24698545
  5. In the deep blue sea, circumnavigating the world with Mr. Belfiore?
  6. Speaking for myself, as of today I'm happier than a pig in mud on (sabotage-protected) W7, and will keep it alive and healthy for as long as it's realistically possible. But in the not too distant future, given that MS no longer releases usable operating systems, I'll have to embrace change and jump ship to something else (Linux or whatever). ^ Exactly, this situation is just beyond surreal. But that's what there is.
  7. ^ Attention on deck! NoelC just had THE eureka moment!
  8. Nowadays "security" is like a Moloch on whose altar liberties must be sacrificed one after another. We can always hope but being realistic come to this point the chance of that happening tends to zero. If Dante could test X, he'd tell us: "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here". All that there is left is enjoy Se7en while it lasts (watchfully protecting it from filicidal sabotage), then look elsewhere.
  9. ^ Reminds me of general Segdwick's famous last words: "Rest easy boys, they couldn't hit an elephant at this distanc ... AAAARGH!"
  10. For the record this registry touch has been known for a while : http://www.ghacks.net/2007/12/16/prevent-malicious-software-removal-tool-from-phoning-home/
  11. ^ That's a relatively simple mobo with just 4+1+1 phases and lacking heatsink on some of the CPU VRMs, only suitable for moderate OC (without further tinkering). Couple guides about OCing Ivy Bridge: http://www.thinkcomputers.org/intel-ivy-bridge-overclocking-guide/ http://www.overclock.net/t/1247413/ivy-bridge-overclocking-guide-with-ln2-guide-at-the-end
  12. ^ Exactly what I'm focused on currently. The writing is on the wall, just look at Wintel sabotaging W7 installation on Skylake ...
  13. Microsoft admits error, after some Windows 7/8.1 PCs began Windows 10 upgrade automatically
  14. Bumped into this GIF on my travels (right click + view image for full satanic splendor): Forget about 'spyware disabling', once you've allowed your comp to be posessed by such evil nothing short of this will save you:
