A bootable CD is probably the best way to go. You can't really save your settings/files between sessions, but it'll get you your desktop with your programs wherever you go. If you use an IMAP based e-mail with portable Thunderbird, that shouldn't really be an issue. Other files, you can store on some web space via FTP or the like. Have a look at ReatogoPE as well. It'll get you a good foothold on a bootable Windows environment that looks and feels like Windows. BartPE uses a different shell, so it'll look different than what you're used to.

jcarle's the guy to listen to... I was about to suggest an antec case as well. They might not have all the flasy bells and whistles of other cases, but they're solid, well built, and often come with good power supplies as well. Another option for the case is the Antec P180 or TX1050B. They're a bit more pricey, but the P180 was built for sound dampening, and the TX1050B would give you a bit more room. I dunno about you, but I ran out of space with 8 drive bays in my old Antec 2650 case. @puntoMX - The AC7 stand up to the 9500? Not a chance... The only thing so far that can beat the 9500 at low very airflow is the Ninja. The Intel stock coolers might not be as noisy as they once were, but when you sit next to one of them compared to a quiet heatsink - you'll wonder how you ever went back. - Zalman CNP9500 LED - Review - Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro - Review - Scythe SCNJ-1000 Ninja - Review

The "testing purposes only" label is a little strange...Also - that type of message usually shows up in the bottom right corner - not left. TweakUI can also fix this problem. Under the General section, uncheck "Show Windows version on Desktop".

Have you run the system scans like Jeremy suggested? - Ad-Aware - Spybot S&D - Windows Defender - Avast! Home Edition Install those programs (from a CD or USB key) and run the scans. You probably won't be able to update the definitions, but the default definitions might be able to pick up on something. @Ctrl-X - You can enter %WINDIR% in place of the Windows directory. It'll make things more general than a hard-coded path.

A difficult question about the windows version in branch new laptop
Zxian replied to nlp156's topic in Windows XP
Usually that kind of hotkey is controlled by BIOS in most laptops. You can however, simply make a separate partition that holds the setup files and then change the bootloader to boot into the secondary partition when needed. Just set the timeout to 1 second (or 0 - it might work, but you'd have to test it out) and then press down continuously when booting to select the "restore" partition. -

Why you need to install IE7 even if you use Firefox or Opera
Zxian replied to TravisO's topic in Windows XP
My only point about the way that IE handles new targets is the fact that they didn't want to change the existing "standard" and perhaps draw some of the Firefox market back to IE. The less "re-learning" users have to do the better. -

Where did 6MB come in? Are you starting the IE/Firefox war again? Everyone's seen enough of it already. When it comes to downloading part of the installation - why does it matter. It's an internet browser, so what's the big deal if you're connected to the internet when you install it? If you've been getting blue screens, then I'm guessing that there's something else going on with your system. I've installed IE7 on my laptop and desktop, and I've seen lots of people around my university use it. And I haven't seen anyone get a blue screen because of it. Googling "IE7 blue screen" doesn't bring up anything relevant... The mess of a tab system? Microsoft took the tab-system from the Mozilla crew, so if you want to point the finger, point it at the Firefox developers. target="_blank" brings up a new window in Firefox and IE7 - thanks to Firefox, who set the precedent. Opera puts the new page in a new tab - the way tabbed browsing should be. I'm talking about Firefox without extensions here - noobs don't understand extensions. -
My first piece of advice - get rid of the DI-614+. I've dealt with them before, and I absolutely hated them (I actually hate most things D-Link TBH). That's probably where the source of your problems lies. As long as you're getting a good signal, your wireless shouldn't be kicking you off like that. My mother's computer is sitting right above my WRT54GL that's running Thibor 15c firmware and neither she or I have ever had any random disconnects. I know that 802.11n is around the corner (don't buy anything until it's final!), so you might not want to spend the money on a new 802.11g router, but have you tried a firmware update for your DI-614+? Updated drivers for your wireless card? What firewall are you running on that computer?

F:\Artist\Album\## - Title.mp3 ## = Track Number That's the format of all of my music when I store it to my hard drive. All my playing of the music is done from Winamp's Media Library though.

Why you need to install IE7 even if you use Firefox or Opera
Zxian replied to TravisO's topic in Windows XP
First off... IE7 is the full release now... Were you getting blue screens with the betas perhaps? The finals have been stable as far as I can tell (due to the lack of "bad" news about IE7's stability on the web). People who are complaining about the security of IE7 already... come on! Firefox 1.5 also had security errors soon after it's release. Chances are you're not going to find all the bugs in your testing. All software today is in a perpetual state of beta. -
Also means the critical write times are longer and it's easier to mess something up if the power goes off halfway through a write. I don't know about you, but I've never had any problems with FAT32 besides the usual incorrect free space count and occasional partial blocks of clusters that were the result of a bad shutdown. The whole point of transactional based systems is that the system can fix the problem if an error occurs. If a FAT32 drive gets a bad write due to a power outage, chances are the blocks that were being written to will have errors in them. The transation handling of the NTFS filesystem means that in the event of a partial write, either the write is continued or rolled back. This results in fewer write errors on NTFS than with FAT32.

Me - for hotmail only, but I'm still using it.

If anything, that'd only make things worse. The limitation on the number of connections is on half-open connections - or connections that haven't been closed. I haven't patched my system, and I'm still able to make plenty of connections when using BitTorrent (plenty > 500). Check the drive for errors using chkdsk and then run System File Checker. What anti-virus program and firewall are you using? Poor ones might improperly hook into the network stack and cause problems.

Nothing specific needs to be running for floppy access. Did you use nLite on your Windows install?
