Are Sata Optical Drives Worth It?
Zxian replied to Brando569's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I sure hope you mean: "Who cares about the price of a DVD-RW these days. I definitely care what brand I get, because of the hassle and frustration when dealing with a failed burn. I had a Sony DVD burner in my machine at work, and I needed to burn some installation CDs. The damned thing just would not finish a CD! I ended up having to FTP the files to my laptop (wired and wireless are separate) and then burn them there. Ever had to wait two hours to transfer data, to burn a couple of CDs? Anyone worried about quality should ask jcarle how many DVDs he's ripped and burned over the past year. -

Intel Core 2 Q6600 G0 Stepping: Cheap Quad Core Just Got Better The title is a little misleading, but in the end, the biggest advantage to teh G0 stepping is bragging rights. The added performance from the slightly higher overclock is marginal at best.

AutoPatcher isn't outdated; following a Core release, there are monthly Updates every "Microsoft Patch Month". Easy to use. The only problem... it's larger in size than all the independent updates, or the ones you download from Windows Update. What's the total size that you need to have all the current updates when using AutoPatcher? 300MB? 400MB? 500MB?

Just a note about this... I recently setup my file server that uses a dynamic GPT disk for the storage array. I read what you said, and realized that I had made a stupid mistake by running the OS drive on a single disk. I went out and bought another disk, and tried to image the original drive, restore it on the RAID1 array, and then repair the installation with the RAID drivers for my system. This didn't work, time and time again, so I ended up having to reinstall the system. I had backed up all the data on the storage array, so I figured that if the dynamic disk got lost, then it wouldn't be too big of a deal. After Windows was done installing, and I managed to get all the drivers installed, I went back into Disk Management to see where my drives were at. Disk Management reported a "foreign dynamic disk" where the storage array was. I was given the option to import it, and *presto*, all my data is still there. I suppose what you're trying to get at is that dynamic disk data pertaining to software RAID configurations are highly dependent on the OS. Since my setup is just a simple volume (for the purposes of future expansion), it's probably recoverable in most cases the way I went through it.

I didn't mention Google Desktop... I mentioned Windows Desktop Search.

Can I recommend an nVidia card...? I've dealt with ATI cards for the past three years, and their driver support is the pits. An nVidia 8800GTS is a bit more pricey, but far better in terms of lack-of-headaches.

See... DVI ports can be used to run analog (i.e. VGA) displays. My guess is that the traces on the board from the DVI port are simply mirrored to the VGA port. S-Video uses a completely different timing scheme, and would therefore need it's own display driver chip - allowing you to run an independent display on that port. Sadly, S-Video doesn't have the resolution capability to do anything decent aside from TV video.

Not really technical related, but thought I'd still share

Haha! It's actually still surprisingly tidy there. Having those big storage cupboards helps a lot with that... they hide the mess... I mean... -
You install WUD to your computer, which will register the ULZ file extension. ULZ is basically just a zip-compressed UL file (UL = Update List). Download and open the ULZ file. This will cause WUD to copy the UL to it's local directory. Now open WUD and download the updates.

I think the problem you're facing is that your video card isn't a dual-head adaptor. In other words, the two output ports display the same basic signal. Check your card details to see if it supports dual head display. Otherwise you'll have to move to another video card.

Multi-Bay External HDD Enclosures

If you're looking for something for multiple users, then you'd either want a NAS solution, or a dedicated file server. I'll have to see what I can come up with for a simple file server setup for you. I saw that puntoMX posted to the MyBook Pro II edition... just a note - you're paying a premium for the price of the 1TB drives. If you build your own file server, you can save quite a bit of money by getting yourself 500GB drives. They're currently at the best price point ($/GB) for storage. -

@melanie - vBulletin is a good forum software, but the OP is just starting out with this stuff. Once he/she gets a larger community, vBulletin or IPB would be a valid option. -
Have you tried cancelling the hardware installation? I still think the problem is with Daemon Tools. When you installed DT, it puts a virtual DVD drive into your system, which Windows treats as hardware. Since something went wrong with your initial Daemon Tools setup, Windows can't properly install this "device". Since there seems to be something not quite right between Kaspersky and Daemon Tools, try the following from safe mode. Uninstall Kaspersky. Install Daemon Tools. Reboot into regular windows and let Windows detect the new "hardware". If it installs correctly, great. Install Kaspersky again. This is usually why software installers recommend that you disable your security software when installing the program. My guess is that Kaspersky blocked that one necessary file, and now the system crashes when it's trying to find it.

Or... you can use WUD to download the update files themselves. http://wud.jcarle.com

Thanks Memnoch. I'll look into getting a couple of those... but boy are they expensive... Another thing I realized... I finally retired my old file server altogether and moved the two PATA hard drives I have into the new system. Interestingly enough - the JMicron PATA controller doesn't support SMART data over the PATA connector. I haven't tried hooking up a hard drive to the SATA port yet, but it's a little strange that I can't pickup the temperatures in either Everest or SpeedFan.

Multi-Bay External HDD Enclosures
Zxian replied to hmaster10's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
If you're looking for that much external storage, you do NOT want to be running it over USB2.0. USB is horrible for block data transfer because of the way the protocol is structured. Firewire, eSATA, or gigabit ethernet are the interfaces you want to consider. I don't know much about external enclosures, but building a simple personal file server is another option. It'll draw a bit more power, but the advantage is that you can utlimately add more disk space to it later, either through onboard connections or a PCI-E SATA controller. Most controllers don't support disks larger than 2TB because of the MBR format of disks that we're all so familiar with. You can read more about the "2TB limit" in this thread. If you want volumes that are more than 2TB, you'll need to run Windows XP x64 or Server 2003 SP1 or higher. The 2.6 Linux kernel also supports volumes larger than 2TB, but I personally don't have much experience in that department. -
DDR2 vs DDR3 - The Battle of Latency vs Bandwidth The fact of the matter is that DDR3 does not out perform DDR2 at the speeds available today. DDR3 support is really the only main advantage that the P35 chipset brings over the 965 chipset, and it's not that much of an advantage anyways, considering the supported DDR3 speeds. Everything else gained with P35 motherboards is just stamp collecting.

You knew "we guys" would do what? Suggest that you get different and possibly better hardware? What's wrong with making a suggestion? Sure, you consulted (not consented) many people about your parts, but again, you got some different opinions when you came here. It's not because we're idiots, or nor are we calling your friends idiots - just more information to base your money on. Better overclocking? No. Memory PCB surface area is fixed. So the more memory you include on the same stick, the higher the density of the chip circuitry. The higher the density, the less resistance and distance there is between circuits, the higher the change for "signal leaks" and "data corruption". So no, overclocking is not better, it gets worse. 2GB modules run much hotter then 1GB modules for the same reasons as above. Stress on the motherboard is irrelevant. The only things that "stress" a motherboard are heat and age. If anything, increasing the heat generated by your modules will reduce lifespan, not increase it. Future expandibilty is a non issue. By the time you'd even possibly consider moving beyond 4GB of memory, you'd already have changed technologies.Need I say more? You kinda just jumped over that without blinking. *shrugs* If that's really what you want, then that's fine. There are other cases that have plenty of space, and are high quality - I just haven't seen why you chose that over some of the other large cases.
