So you want to say that Windows XP x64 won't work with FAT32? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yep <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Of course (assuming file access code were optimized) a 64 bit CPU could handle a fat32 partition twice as fast... get it? 32 times 2 = 64... (OH wait... April 1st was a quite a ways back sorry )
  2. Not sure about you, but on my jobs I get paid by the hour. It might be great for me moneywise, but I do get frustrated when I'm not being productive. Such as waiting for PROPER shutdown to remove/change components or whatever reason I need the PC off. Oh yeah, and for my personal use... laptop. I hate the HD spinning and the cooling fan blocked in the carrying case.. thus I wait... Sure Microsoft programmers spend all that effort on that XPerience, and you don't even use it, you ungrateful little so-and-so Actually on my own machines, the only one I shut down regularly is my laptop (which travels with me regularly).
  3. @prathapml: noticed you have been pretty riteous about replying to questions that have obviously been asked & answered before, or clearly not 100% kosher with the rules of posting. It gives a very welcoming feel to the boards. As far as I/me... I've always TRY to search, be it forum keyword or google. But trying to come up with the right keyword / phrase combo can be frustrating. I'll get sick of dozens of screens of HiJackThis logs when all I really want is info on a mystery process or startup item. Is it considered lazy when I don't look at every single screenfull of these log posts (just an example, but hopefully the bright minds here can extrapolate to other sortta similar situations). I don't think it's wrong to post after TRYING to search and coming up with lots of nothing. Maybe it needs to be mentioned in the post to avoid a little "try to search first" and "read the rules" responses. What gets me is all the replies in the forums (not just here) that say Google is your friend!!! I then try to do a google search and lots of times turns up two things... Jack & Squat. (nothing for the non american expressionists out there ) so doing a google search for the subject in the post per the suggestion doesn't always turn up info... plus info can "dissappear"/be removed. A few tips... since google isn't the endall of the 'net (gasp.... did I "say" that outloud?) recently I've found myself using alltheweb, and dogpile. Sorry... wasn't trying to rant... anyway just a few late night views... need sleep snzzzzzzzzz
  4. I've used BartPE once, and I've never used WinPE. However I have installed Windows XP many times. Durring Windows XP setup, you can press Shift-F10 to get a command prompt.... Does WinPE offer the same feature? (pardon my ignorance on this matter)
  5. I've found it necessary to put "ProductKey" into the winnt.sif file... I've also found that any info that is correct, setup will use, and any incorrect/invalid info, that is usually prompted on an install without a winnt.sif file (man that's been a while since I found this site ) However if you leave ProductKey out of your winnt.sif file, I don't think it will work properly... So example.... setup a WORKING unattended install disc with your ProductKey in it's winnt.sif file, once you get that working, then edit the winnt.sif file line as follows ProductKey=22222-22222-22222-22222-22222 Then the install will be as unattended as it was before, except it will stop and ask you for your code.... once a valid code is provided, it will contiue with the rest of the install. Note: I think you have to use characters that would appear in a valid code AND in a format that a valid key would be (ie 5 groups of 5 characters separated by -s)... The nice effect is that if you build/use computers with a floppy, you can then use that one CD and copy the winnt.sif file to a floppy and edit it with the proper ProductKey.. (no need to waste CDRs !!!!!)
  6. Perhaps when you do xcopy /y /e %systemdrive%\install\favorites\*.* "%userprofile%\favorites\" %userprofile% isn't set properly yet? One thing might be to include ina .cmd file that you KNOW gets executed, is echo "*%userprofile%*" > c:\userdat.txt or other suitable file in some location, and see what that var actually equates too. (be sure to use quotes or *s at the beginning and end of the variable, so you know if it's empty or not... Perhaps checking errorlevels of the xcopy command might help... also look into the following additional switches.... /e /s /c /i /h /k /v I use those ALL the time... (hopefully their available at that stage of the install).. also maybe put quotes around %systemdrive%\install\favorites\*.* in your xcopy statement....? durring install maybe the spaces in the .url files are causing the xcopy to choke? if your favorites don't change very often, perhaps include them in your winnt.sif for example.   7. Usefull YES... Convenient... well... not very... Under cleanup i was aware of steps 1, 2, 4 & 5 To d/l with some spyware blocking sites, I have to do a google search for "spyware_remover_program_name site:download.com" Under immunize I've used steps 1 & 2 So thank you for the extra info... (no really that said sincerely) Oh joy... more steps per user ah the tedium... Now for question time.... since I know the other user profiles can be accessed in the registry via some HKEY_USERS\S-variousnumbers why can't (are there) any of these immunizers take care of that? Instead of running per user. Some of my clients have upwards of 5 user accounts.... although I charge/get paid by the hour , when I leave I'd to make it easy on them to keep their profiles uptodate..

  9. I've searched the forums with keyword 885626 and found lots of people doing installs with this, but I'm wondering if it's more monkey see monkey do, or is it really necessary? I'm adding the latest round of updates and was removeing the old/replaced updates and noticed that on this popular thread that KB885626 is listed, however I never included it in my slipstreamed disc since it seems to be needed before installing SP2. So since I'm installing fresh from my CD with SP2 already slipstreamed, may I safely ingore this update? or has anyone with the vast experience of this forum found it necessary?
  10. Good Tips MCT... I would also recommend after spyware blaster... Goto download.com and get Spybot Search & Destroy Download, run, update it.... and make sure to IMMUNIZE... also do a scan for problems as well.. and finally if you're running Windows XP... Goto microsoft.com and get the Spyware Removal Tool install update and do a FULL SCAN (come to think of it... do a full scan with AdAware also) after the scan, be sure to switch all "ignore" to "remove", and somewhere in the configuration options, select "Real Time Scan". If you don't have Win XP, use the TeaTimer feature of Spybot Search & Destroy.
  11. (assuming it's a DI 604) Straight outta the manual.... from Dlink's Website The procedure seems to be the same for either revision. Steps 1 and 3 being the most noteworthy. When you "reset" it, did you hold the button in long enough? I've also seen some (not this model, maybe not this brand) where you have to apply power while holding reset. Perhaps not using the correct default user name/password? (Whoa !!!) I just looked at the manual... I've seen "admin" for the password with no username, but this is the first time I've seen the PASSWORD BLANK!!! Scarry...
  12. I sure do. Atari 2600. Have every cartridge I ever bought (also the manuals). I loved when they were getting rid of the system because I loaded up on those $5 specials. When I first got asteroids I played 'till I had calluses. I remember Pitfall totally rocked (mapped out the whole game). Pitfall was cool since it was the 1st game I had that instead of a dot/box, you got a guy with arms and legs!! The only thing I was wondering... I wanted to replace the switch box that came with it with one of those "auto switchers" that sensed when there was channel 3/4 signal it would automatically connect that to the anntena port so there was no need to reach behind the TV and slide the switch. I've tried one from Radio Shack, but it didn't work for me (I think it was for an original nintendo). Has anyone gotten one to work with the 2600?
  13. I've never seen a winnt.sif file with batch/cmd file entries!!!! I only thought it could contain stuff such as the following... [some section name] variable = valueplease point me to the resources that allow such stuff in winnt.sif. I'd be VERRRRY interested in learning this.
  14. Nope. I don't see mist, I don't hear noises, I don't even see a CAR !!! I'm kinda agreeing with cypher_soundz assesment as far as missing something. I'm guessing 1 of 2 things happened. 1. That car commercial was "just kinda there" on dvo's servers, possibly causing too much bandwith draw and now has been replaced by something promoting their products. 2. We've been had from the beginning. and it was just a scam post to get us to download an ad. Number two doesn't make sense assuming the 1st few replies were true in claiming that video scared them/someone they knew. so I'd say they took it down. anyone have any concrete info on what happened to the "spooky CAR ad"?
  15. I know with netgear routers you Type in a MAC address you have to use ":" instead of "-" (maybe the otherway around) to separate each 8bit hex number (00 through FF) or it considers it illegal. Sometimes entering the MAC address without any separaters or perhaps spaces. for example: 01-23-45-67-89-AB 01:23:45:67:89:AB 01 23 45 67 89 AB 0123456789AB Note: valid characters are (excluding commas) 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F in groups of two characters (see above code box for an example). I'm not sure how you got it to recognize your one card, but sometimes (before you activeate MAC filtering) when you go to add an address to the list, it will have the cards already associated with the router/access point in the list for you to select and click ADD. If your router has that feature: 1. turn off filtering 2. get your card to connect to your router/AP 3. (in router/AP setup) go to add MAC address to filter 4. select your usb cards address 5. APPLY (or however your routers interface works) 6. then finally turn filtering on again. (make sure in step 2 you can actually surf the web before going to step 3)
  16. (hey smokeyjoint ya mights wants ta edit your post before you ummmm "get moderated" I just got finished reading a thread that heavily was.) Yeah I have to install 98 often ... on the same PC (over and over) with the restore disc or use whatever their code is from their OEM sticker. Too bad MS' Antispyware won't run on 98, it's the OS that REALLY needs it!!! Well the real time component anyway. I see more software (including games) requiring Win 2000/XP @ a minimum.... I too like 98 (Well FAT32) since I can access it without a GUI. However I wouldn't sacrifice XP's stability for it. NTFS all the way. But it's simply not worth my time resintalling it. I will rarely reinstall 98. Either they (my clients) get XP or it's not worth my time and their money. At that point it is a "hobby computer" still worth it if you don't have to pay someone else to work on it. Sure drop some ram in. Make 98 go faster (if you can do it yourself). XP is relatively easy to tweak. If you know how to double click on a text file with a .reg extension. A text file forged with notepad or other text editor. Yeah ok you don't need to hex edit some dll file to allow 98 to play nice with your custom theme. 98 will be around for quite a while since even the $500 or so for bargian computers might be out of someone's range to upgrade and some even run Win 3.1 or DOS (dosshell). But I'd say that as far as mainstream, it will be become very difficult to find any new software supporting non 2k or up OSs (as far as windows goes). Just like the DVD blank media section has grown (larger) than the blank CD section at the computer store. Floppies are still there (barely). Same thing goes with the OS. But if it still does what you need/want at a speed you can tollerate.... "it ain't obsolete!"
  17. I like the real time scanning or active shield... (I forgot what they call it) component of MSASbeta1. Pretty cool how it does that automatically. Kinda like antivirus for spyware. I know Spybot S&D's tea timer does something similar, but I think MS' catches more TYPES of things real time. I said types cuz they all catch something the others miss (and they all miss something). I just ran it (MSAS) tonight (well last night technically) on a clients PC and of the 20k files it scanned..... over 30% were infested! And almost as many registry entries were hit. Mostly what gain changed its name to, along with something called iMesh. I ran something else and it found 100 more entries (mostly cookies). MS still missed a few things, but pretty much removed it all. Although newdotnet's .dll had to be manually removed from start part of registry to keep windows from whining. Now if they could comeout with a firewall that'll intelligently handle "generic host services". I have no idea what to say to that when it comes up.
  18. You got Office 2003 to run on windows 98 ? what's your secret? Granted I've never tried, but according to the specs, windows 2000 was the minimum for office 2003 !!!

  20. I see all these discussions about how to silent install the GDI+ bad library detection tool, and the Malicious Software Removal tool. These files are BIG compared to the few bytes in a .reg file. I can't understand why (other than not knowing now to do registry entries) someone would use up 100s of KBs of valuable space on an install disc to run an installer that checks for something that should already be patched! To quote from MS' Malicious Software Removal tool page, this doesn't install anything! So why have it on the disc? Whenever a new update comes out, I manually run it and compare registry snap shots, and put whatever looks like Windows Update would want on my new disc (I'm 2 for 2 so far with this method) GDI+ seems to want me to run windows updates eventhough nothing shows up on the list. (plus office isn't even installed). Well there's my view. I'm currious of other peoples' views on this matter. (really I am) Which method do you use? and more importantly why?
  21. Well NOW Kevin isn't even one of the main guys, I always see him off to the side. Yes it is quite terrible what the Comcast murder err... merger did to a once excellent channel. I started watching when it was ZDTV! Before I had cable/satellite and had to go to friends houses to watch it. I considered viewing a real treat.

I just downloaded, extracted, and ran the executable in Standard_Monitor_Driver_Signed_WinXP It claimed to create a directory, but after it said I didn't have a viewsonic, and closed it, the folder was gone! I ran it a second time, chose "reinstall/repair" but before closed it, i opened a command prompt and "CDed" into "c:\ViewSonic" and then closed the installer. The files stayed this time!!! Bunch of infs, one of which was for a VX910. Not sure how to incorporate these into your install disc to place these, but they are there.
  23. I've also used a virtual floppy drive from this site. I've gotten Norton Ghost boot disk creator to write to it even!!!! (and got a cd to boot from the image file created with it (the virtual drive). It's not quite the quality of Daemon Tools, but it worked quite well. Speaking of which, does anyone know of a EXCELLENT virtual floppy drive driver/program for XP? I was hopping for a plugin for Daemon Tools since that seems like a solid app. but as of yet, found nothing (except the one above).

To answer your question on what to keep, (assuming you have one of those 4 extra HDs plugged in) first clean your IE (and other browser) cache for all user accounts, then run disk cleanup wizzard. Then copy your "Documents and Settings" folder. This will get most stuff (reason for 1st step, is so this maneuver won't take nearly as long ) If you use a palm, look for the "Palm" folder. you can copy all of it or just your Palm Desktop profile name subfolder will do. but I like to play it safe and grab it all. If you use Quicken, (and have your data saved in the program folder like it's default) be sure to run Quicken then do a backup (but tell it to go to a folder on your other HD). Umm... Of course any download folders that arent in the aforementioned files. and any misc junk you saved in the C: root. Probably other things, but that's all I can think of... (saw everyone telling you what to remove, but noone suggesting what files to keep) sounds like it's a good time to put all this Unattended Install knowledge to practical use !! Oh yeah.... I backup "Documents and Settings" like this: (assuming your other hard drive is "G:" and your default is "C:") open a command prompt and type... g: mkdir c cd c xcopy /e /s /c /i /h /k /v c:\ . and when that's finished you might want to un hide and such with g: cd \ attrib -r -s -h r attrib -r -s -h r\*.* /s /d The first snippet is becuase I ALWAYS get failures copying stuff from the Docs'nSettin's folder using the GUI and what it errors on is stuff I've never needed. (also better than doing a move on my live system). The second snippet is the "c" folder always seems to be hidden, so one attrib for that, and to unhide all the "Local Settings" stuff the second attrib is necessary.
