Yesterday, I found this old button code in my archive. As the code of the button looked promising, I translated it and modified it completely. I changed the tooltip, totally reworked the menu of the important about: pages and added a help menu. I created a version for New Moon/Pale Moon and a version for Serpent/Basilisk/Firefox as some about: pages are different in these browsers. This button has a special feature. When selecting a string or copying a string to the clipboard, a middle-click onto the toolvar button opens it in the about:config page. All in all, it's a kind of recycling of old code so that it works again in our browsers. Thus, old code is not always useless and lost. And the code of this button is so universal that it seems to run in all Firefox-based browsers. Anyway! I will also post this forked custom button here very soon.

Thanks for replying! I will post the new version 2.0 of Restart & Purge soon. I have reworked the code considerably, and after a lot of testing, this custom button now works perfectly. The old version wasn't bad, but the new one is definitely better and more compatible. I think there should no longer be any problems that could have occurred in very rare cases. BTW, there are a lot of alternatives for the About-Menu custom button in Serpent 52.

The Custom Buttons version I use has been modified by me. The original version was actually multilingual, but the locales were not complete and therefore faulty. Many entities were missing, and I didn't feel like correcting and translating all that. Too much work. I prefer the English language in this area anyways. That's why I turned the multilingual version into a purely English one. I don't have the original link anymore, but maybe I'll write about this version here soon and upload my mod. I already posted a screenshot of this version:

Personally, I use a much more recent Custom Buttons extension with a lot of additional features created by a well-known and very talented developer of custom buttons and extensions who was also very active in the old Custom Buttons forum that time. This Custom Buttons extension is of course particularly interesting for developers of custom buttons.

I have unfortunately noticed that strangely enough, the interest in custom buttons does not seem to be particularly high here. Therefore my question to all users of UXP browsers is how you feel about the custom buttons and whether you use them at all. TBH, if there is no real interest though, I do not need to post more custom buttons here, either. Especially the ones I created or modified myself. Personally, I am a fan of the legacy custom buttons and try to use them as much as possible. They use much less resources and cause much less conflict than extensions. Therefore, in my browsers, additional functions are first provided by custom buttons and only then the still missing ones by extensions.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I assume all your random crashes are related to the already reported gkmedias.dll issue. Right? If so, you can replace this file with the previous one without having to completely revert to the previous version of New Moon 28. I mention this as I have been testing the new release the last hours. After replacing the gkmedias.dll file, this new release of New Moon 28 seems to be working fine so far. -

AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Confirmed. The gkmedias.dll file (8.496.128 Bytes) is faulty. I replaced it by the previous gkmedias.dll file (8.623.104 Bytes), and the error is history. I can confirm the same problem in the most recent release of New Moon 28 (2024-10-11). I replaced gkmedias.dll file (9.862.144 Bytes) by the previous one (9.989.632 Bytes), and the error is history. -

For some time now, your swan song to the UXP era can be read in each of your posts here. Very inspiring and helpful. -

I don't get an error in gkmedias.dll when calling up the qwant.com website in the most recent release of New Moon 28 from today. -

AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
FYI, the Firefox command line option -purgecaches does not work with New Moon 28. When using it for starting this browser, the Browser Console reports that -purgecaches is an unrecognized command line flag. -

Has anyone here ever noticed that deleting the cache and then restarting in New Moon 28 (and other Firefox-based browsers) creates a subfolder trash##### in the profile folder cache2? This is automatically deleted approximately 1 minute after restarting. At least on my Windows XP machine. Note: ##### is a sequence of (usually four or five) digits. -
TBH, I can't say anything about the old Reddit Enhancement Suite as I have never used it.

My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
For testing purpose, I opened a small video with low resolution on Imgur. Nearly 100% CPU usage and tons of the same JavaScript error in the Web Console. One more bloated website and service which does not run bearably in New Moon 28 and Serpent 52 on Windows XP. Now, I know why I have always avoided this service, especially as an image hoster. -
I have spent the last few days testing Mypal 68.14.4b with heavy and resource-hungry websites and have come to the conclusion that old, heavily modified profiles with many extensions, userscripts and CSS stylesheets installed do not work well with sites such as eBay, Amazon or Discord. With a new, fresh profile, in which only the most necessary settings are made, these sites run much better.

XP/Vista-compatible clients for modern email services?

Here is a quotation from the OE Classic online help: The advantage of these open formats is that they can be easily read by other tools. -
My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Thanks for the confirmation! As I also observed, the login from the Outlook website works in New Moon 28 but the login from Microsoft website doesn't. And Serpent 52 fails in both cases. BTW, in Mypal 68.14.4b, the Microsoft login page works as it should. -
My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
I can well imagine that. More than 50% of the world's population is male, and such porn websites are highly frequented. And once again you're completely wrong. I hate Microsoft. Especially for the restricted, disempowering and bloated (newer) operating systems, websites, programmes and services. One of the reasons why I use Windows XP, from a time when Microsoft still produced sensible things. Moreover, your beloved porn website is totally crap as you have to register first. Apart from that, such filthy websites should be discussed elsewhere and not here since there are of course underage members and, in addition, those who consider such pages to be offensive. And as I already said, I consider requests for members to register on such a questionable website to verify login problems to be highly dubious and a no-go. -
My Browser Builds (Part 5)
AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
Just to report here a rather important and reputable website , I checked Microsoft's account login website in the most recent releases of New Moon 28 and Serpent 52. Unfortunately, I got an empty login window in New Moon 28, the same I got in Mailnews. And in Serpent 52, not even the login window could be called up. If calling up the login window from the Outlook website, I was able to login to my email account in New Moon 28. -

AstroSkipper replied to roytam1's topic in Browsers working on Older NT-Family OSes
If I were to report every dirty website that doesn't run properly in UXP browsers, this thread would be completely littered. Apart from that, I consider requests for members to register on such a questionable website to verify login problems to be highly dubious and a no-go. I think rather important and reputable websites should be considered here. -
As far as a more up-to-date version of uBO is concerned, I'm with you although uBlock Origin Legacy still works fine. And a more up-to-date script manager would also be great. YouTube works great with VORAPIS V3. And you don't have to open every piece of crap with the UXP browsers. That's what tablets and smartphones are for.

XP/Vista-compatible clients for modern email services?
AstroSkipper replied to Mathwiz's topic in Windows XP
All mailboxes and messages are stored in the folder C:\Documents & Settings\YourUsername\Local Settings\Application Data\OEClassic\User\Main Identity\ in the form of db files. -
Legacy extensions and the mighty but underestimated custom buttons for UXP browsers are able to do many things that webextensions are not allowed to do. That's why I love them. I see them as a way of customising the browser to the user's preferences. Their tasks are many and varied, and accessing web content is just one of them, albeit an important one. But they can do much more. And new ones are still being developed. There are so many of them that you can always find something useful that still works. Or you try to bring them back to life. That's why I created this thread.
