Last Versions of Software for Windows 2000
tomasz86 replied to thirteenth's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
No problems with Skype 5.3.0.111. This is the last version which seems to work 100% OK. I also have the audio devices problem starting from version 5.3.0.113. -
v1-early-c5c works

SATA to IDE adapters: which/what/why?
tomasz86 replied to dencorso's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
So I actually ordered one of these adapters. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a slim one, only a similar thing to the one mentioned above. I checked my notebook and I think it should fit with an SSD after removing the case to make it look like this: EDIT I received the stuff today and it does fit when the drive is not fixed which shouldn't be an issue with SSD. -
Will Win2000 pro do everything 98 does ?
tomasz86 replied to Stuckin98's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
CloneZilla is very simple and fast when making backups of whole disks or partitions. Making a backup copy is a matter of minutes if you boot if from a USB flash drive. -
Good topic I'm thinking about buying a USB 3.0 PCI-E controller based on a NEC chipset and I wonder if it'll work properly under W2k. I've already checked the drivers and there are no dependency issues so theoretically there's a high probability that they'd work. The manufacturer of the controller also states that these drivers are for 2K / XP. I'll post here again if I finally buy and test it.

v1-early-c5b works... but I've experienced some "memory cannot be read" errors for last few days. I'm not sure if they're related to the patch though as I've been testing many different things recently. --- I prepared a new update KB908536. It installs a uxtheme.dll file which is absolutely necessary for Adobe Flash 11. Its control panel applet is not installed if no uxtheme.dll is present in the system. No problems with v1-early-c5a.

IPS will be fine unless you're a hardcore gamer... if you are then 120hz TN will be better.

Operating system for best performance with 9600 GT
tomasz86 replied to myelin's topic in Hardware Hangout
If you trust benchmarks then XP should be faster for DX9 games... but if you actually want to buy the OS it'd be wiser to go for 7. -
1. No graphical interface when /sos enabled. The text-mode stuff gets up to acpitabl.dat and then monitor goes off. 2. Bootlog doesn't get created at all. 3. v4-test3 doesn't change anything
-
As I said before, with /sos on it fails before even reaching this level so there's no progress bar at all.
-
It's like this, there are two cases: 1. Without /sos switch I see the bootscreen, progress bar goes 100% and then everything disappears, monitor goes off and system doesn't start. 2. With /sos switch it loads drivers up to acpitabl.dat and then screen goes off. So you can say that booting goes further without the /sos switch as when it's enabled I don't even see this screen.
-
Well, the problem persists with v4-test2 There's also a graphic bug - progress bar on bootskin is displayed in the left-up corner.
-
It doesn't work. Still the same issue occurs I tried both /bootskin=0 and the other one.
-
Oh, I'm sorry I missed the v3/v4-test part. But I can't use v3 or v4-test here as the system won't boot after installing one of them.
-
I didn't have any /bootskin settings set. I've just tried both of these but they have absolutely no effect. System booted normally without any change in bootskin. [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Advanced Server" /FASTDETECT /bootskin=1:0:0:0:0:0:416:640:10:4

Since it's impossible to make this kind of rollup compatible with sfc /scannow (because of overlapping catalog files from IE5&IE6) I decided to remove it. Maybe I'll try to make an IE6-only rollup in near future

No problems with v1-c5

Why this Diehard Win2K user finally switched to WinXP
tomasz86 replied to Syclone0044's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
ClearType problem is not that simple That version of FreeType works nice but only for Latin alphabet. Chinese characters for example won't get cleartyped at all. There are "upgraded" versions made by some Japanese programmers but I tried many different ones and wasn't satisfied. Also the newest ones don't work on 2K -
I've already seen that post but I don't think it'll apply here. In that case all of XP, 2000, Vista & 7 refused to start but here it's only related to 7 (I don't know about Vista). Also removing memory isn't really an option because the notebook has only 128 MB integrated and the one stick which can be removed is a 512 MB one.
-
I can also add that Safe Mode works.

I wonder if there's any way to install Windows 7 on this computer: The installation runs correctly but after so there's a BSOD at the first booting of the system: In the BIOS there are no setting related to ACPI and there has been no BIOS updates available for this model so I guess it indeed may not be ACPI compliant. On the other hand there are no problems with 2000/XP running with ACPI HAL enabled on it. Are there any workarounds which may be useful in this case?
-
I'm looking forward to it --- I've disabled downloading of MSI 4.5 until it's fixed. Please uninstall MSI 4.5 and continue using MSI 3.1 as MSI 4.5 doesn't work at this moment. I'm sorry for this confusion

.NET Framework for Windows NT 5.x (2000/XP/2003)
tomasz86 replied to tomasz86's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
Thanks I updated the first post: - KB982167 replaced by KB2418241 & KB2539631. By the way, do you perhaps have a full .NET 3.0-3.5 updates list too? I'd appreciate such a list a lot -
Here are the results: 1. Early-c3 doesn't work. After loading acpitabl.dat an error about ntoskrnl.exe missing or corrupt pops up. 2. Early-c4 seems to work OK.
