  1. I'm definitely not going to upgrade the system hastily, but I also don't want to wait for too long until it's to late to upgrade for free. Yes, that is basically my question. I want to receive the free license for Windows 10 but keep Windows 8.1 installed for the time being. I would also like to know whether this "free upgrade" gives me rights to downgrade the system to the previous version, as it was the case with either Windows XP downgradable to Windows 2000 or Windows 7 downgradable to Windows Vista.
  2. Well, I stick to the terms "upgrade" and "downgrade" as that's what is used in MS licensing agreements and I want to make sure that everything will be "correct" in this aspect The problem is that at the moment I don't know whether / when I will want to upgrade the tablet to Windows 10. My point is that I may want to do it, ex. 3 years later. Yet, I would still like to receive the free upgrade license which is offered right now. As far as I understand, the free offer will not be available any longer after this one-year time frame.
  3. I have two machines with Windows 8/8.1 pre-installed. One of them runs Windows 8.1 and the other Windows 8.1 Pro. As far as I understand, I am eligible to upgrade both of them to Windows 10 within one year for free: Source: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-faq In this case I would like to upgrade both of them to Windows 10 for free in the near future. However, one of the devices is a 8" tablet (ASUS VivoTab Note 8) where, at least for now, I would like to continue to use Windows 8.1 since Windows 10 seems to be significantly less touch friendly (slower task switching, no charms bar, inferior Internet browser, etc.). Would it be fine in terms of the license to upgrade the tablet from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Home, and then downgrade to Windows 8.1 without losing the rights for the Windows 10 free upgrade?
  4. I've added one new XP update for WMP9 which can be slipstreamed. I've also discovered some issues in the current list of WMP9 updates & codecs. There are at least several more WMP9 updates to add. Especially when it comes to the WMP codecs, it's one big mess as far as file versioning goes. My custom HFSLIP package seems to work well - no issues with slipstreaming all official updates (tested in Windows 2000 and Windows 7 x64 as hosts). I shall be able to upload a test package in the next few days.
  5. I've updated the website again - removed the Microsoft Update section (check the changelog for explanation) and fixed some minor bugs. I'm also working on HFSLIP. I've fixed a few issues when it's used in newer versions of Windows, such as running as administrator, using PEChecksum instead of ModifyPE and several Windows 2000 specific problems: modyfing SETUPREG.HIV with reg.exe to add 48-bit LBA support (a bunch of useless log files were added to the source)properly unpacking wmfdist.exe from KB891122 (the installer didn't run at all)slipstreaming the newest Digital certificates (rvkroots.exe) update whose installer cannot run in Windows 2000 (but the files inside are compatible)At the moment I want to make sure that my HFSLIP package can be used to prepare a fully updated Windows 2000 source with all the official updates slipstreamed. I also want it to run in any version of Windows from 2000 to 10 so that you don't need to use a VM just to use HFSLIP (if your host OS is Vista or newer).
  6. Yes, of course! I just want to make sure that everything functions 100% correctly with the official updates and hotfixes first, and then move on to the unofficial packages. You can expect frequent updates in the next few days. I'll try to update the post #775 when I'm done with something. Right now I've just finished tidying up the Download Archive.
  7. I think this may be a solution to the problem: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/156521-unofficial-sp-52-for-microsoft-windows-2000/?p=1103612
  8. Long time no see, dencorso! I'd guess it's the registry fix mentioned in KB919521: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\HAL]"14140000FFFFFFFF"=dword:00000010The REG file can be downloaded from my website, together with UR1 (KB891861).
  9. Hello everyone! I've updated my website. You can check it here: http://windows2000.tk/new (the old one will be replaced in a few days) done! (check http://windows2000.tk) I've removed all the different sub-pages and merged everything into one single page. There are some important changes regarding the updates so please check the latest changelog. I've also added a few new updates and fixes some bugs and errors. The website itself should also load faster. What I want to do now is to: add a new HFSLIP section where the script itself and other required tools will be provided to download. Mimo has stopped updating his website and I think it will be better to have everything required for slipstreaming in one place. done!update the Download Archive (add new updates & remove obsolete ones) done!add new WMP9 updates for XP/2003 which can be slipstreamed without any changesadd direct links to ARA updates (a long-term goal)fix the new website itself to function properly in IE5/6/7 done!I'm also thinking about modyfing the HFSLIP script to slipstream XP/2003 updates into Windows 2000. There are several cases where all the three systems use exactly same files but at the moment HFSLIP is unable to process such updates. I just want to comment on the instructions by MrMaguire above: You don't need SP4 and UR1 if you use USP5.1. They are all included in it.I'd argue against using UR2. There were some bugs in it which I was not able to fix. Windows Update will install the vast majority of what was included in UR2 anyway. If you use new / unofficial drivers, they should be installed last, after all the official & unofficial updates have been installed. The reason is that the new drivers may not work without the updated system files (or may break the system in the worst case).Anyhow, please let me know if you have any questions, comments and suggestions about the website and the future plans that I've written above!
  10. I fixed this bug. The fix isn't perfect as I have no access to the beta K versions older than v6, but works nevertheless. I've created a GitHub repository where you can track all the changes: https://github.com/tomasz1986/HFSLIP Apart from fixing the bug I also removed the special characters mentioned above ( #56) from the script. They don't play nicely with different code pages. There are some other issues in the script but I've had no time to have a look at them yet. hfslip-1.7.10_beta_K_v7.zip
  11. I've just uploaded a new daily of UURollup (sorry for the usual delay ) All files from the newest BWC kernel added.Application Compatibility Launcher and Process Explorer available via Programs\Accessories\System Tools in Start Menu.No more shell32.dll errors during the installation process.I'm also working on removing the modified sfc.dll file (Avast issue) and using another method for disabling System File Protection. I've also finished preparing the new HFSLIP package but found out that the new HFSLIP beta by Acheron has some issues, and I want to fix them first. My website update will also be delayed till next weekend.
  12. @MrMaguire 1. I can't really say anything about Office 2007 since I haven't really used it in Windows 2000. You would have to ask blackwingcat directly about those issues. As far as I remember though, there have always been problems with Outlook 2007. If you want to use a stable Office suite I suggest sticking to Office 2003. LibreOffice also seems to work fine (use the portable version if the standard one's installer doesn't work properly). 2. In case of the shell32.dll thing, normally it should be enough to just close all Windows Explorer windows (check this YT video). It's impossible to make the installer close explorer.exe automatically since the error window pops up before the installation has even started. I'm working on a permanent fix to this problem. 3. I really have no idea about the VMware tools problem You'd have to do some testing to find out if it's really UURollup to break it. If yes, then test different versions of it to determine whether it's the newest one to cause the issue. At the moment I'm updating my website, i.e. adding new updates to and fixing some bugs in the HFSLIP Updates Lists, and also working on the UURollup related content. I'm also testing a new HFSLIP package with all official updates included. A new daily of UURollup-v11 is also ready but it's very experimental. I don't want to upload anything half-baked though, so I'm going to give myself some time to finish everything. All of these should be ready around next weekend.
  13. Why do you think UURollup is no longer maintained? I may be slow at updating it but I've never said anything about stopping maintenance. The CheckNameLegalDOS8Dot3 doesn't seem to be included in the newest version of BWC kernel32.dll either (which is integrated into the newest daily release of UURollup-v11).
  14. A new daily release is ready, with files from the newest BWC kernel included. I hope the issue has been fixed. I've also uploaded an updated version of the .NET Framework combined installer (available in the Download Archive under Windows/Windows2000/Unofficial/USP5/.NETFramework).
  15. There exists no written documentation on UURollup (especially the daily releases). You can use software like KDiff3 to compare different releases. Just unpack them and compare the two folders. In case of the newest daily release, I just updated all the BlackWingCat's files to the newest versions and disabled the previously added Cryptographic Service (as he did in his kernel), and also updated the HOSTS file and Process Explorer.
  16. I've added two new official updates to the HFSLIP Updates Lists on my website. I've also prepared a new daily release of UURollup-v11. All files from the newest BWC kernel are included in it, together with some other fixes.
  17. Thank you for the comments, and I'm glad that you like it! Some content is still missing (specifically the full changelog for the Updates Lists) but I'm going to add it as soon as possible. There are also some issues in the Android AOSP browser and Internet Explorer. Especially in IE8 there's a nasty bug where the browser goes into the compatibility view when you click on that Arabic text. I should probably mention it somewhere on the site, but you can view details of each icon used on the Updates Lists such as hotfix, Server only or country flags icons. The details will pop up either on mouse hover, when navigating using the TAB key or when clicking/tapping on each of the icons. Oh, and please let me know if there are either any language mistakes on the site or if there's anything unclear that could be written better.
  18. As far as I understand, it's only about dropping support for Windows Phone 7. I'm also curious whether they will also block Skype on Android 2.2 Froyo. Just a few weeks ago I installed Skype on my old Android 2.2 phone and it worked. It wasn't the newest version but the Google Play Store automatically downloaded Skype v3.2.x which still worked then. Now they state that they only support Android 2.3 and above. All of this is ridiculous nevertheless, since (as said before) the old versions of the XDA Skype mod still work fine. I especially hate when you're forced to automatically upgrade without a choice. Dropbox is probably the best example. I still use it as I couldn't find any decent alternative, but don't like this "feature" at all. Google Chrome also automatically updates but at least there are simple ways to block it.
  19. This is indeed interesting. I've just checked two versions of Skype: Skype 3.5.0.239Skype 3.8.0.188None of them work ("can't connect"). Is your Skype installation in Windows 98 new, or have you been using it for some time? I have a strange feeling that it may not work again if you reinstall and try to log in from scratch.
  20. I think they do it through WSUS but you won't find anything without direct links leaked by someone. 2 years ago I managed to find a WSUS list of direct URLs to other post-EOL updates but they were already dead. It seems that those updates are available to download only for a short period of time. The links at that time looked like this: http://download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/csa/secu/2010/12/windows2000-kb2347290-v2-x86-custom-enu_8abd494904bbcd03fc189f5c4991ecf398a054dc.exe (no longer working)
  21. It's been long time since the last posting. I'm really sorry for not being able to spend as much time as I'd like to on this project I've finally managed to prepare a new version of my website. You can check the new version under http://windows2000.tk/new Most important changes: Huge update to the Updates Lists. It's been reorganised - the number of lists have been reduced, additional details for several updates have been added, invalid information has been corrected. I've added a few new updates (including the newest cumulative time zone update from August 2014). I have also decided to remove all unofficial updates from the lists. I'm still interested in unofficial updates for Windows 2000 but there were just too many updates to maintain. I'm going to offer the unofficial files later in a much better package (just in case - you can find the majority of the old unofficial updates in the download Archive in Windows2000/Unofficial/Experimental). You should check the changelog under http://windows2000.tk/new/updates for a full list of changes to the Updates Lists.General visual overhaul. While I'm not a fan of useless bells and whistles, I do think that a website should look decent, and the old layout definitely wasn't the prettiest in the world. I hope the new one is better and more usable. In short - the fonts are now bigger, the colour scheme should provide better readability and everything should be easier to browse in general. The website should also be much more accessible - keyboard and touch navigation has been vastly improved (before a lot of information was available only on mouse hover) and icons used in the Updates Lists are actual images now (not background images inserted through CSS like before).Better performance. The site should actually perform better than before because I got rid of jQuery and cleaned the HTML greatly. At the moment there is only one tiny JavaScript used for smooth scrolling (helps a lot when jumping through the Updates Lists) and nothing more. I could make it load even faster by combining the images into sprites, etc. but this would only hurt semantics and accessibility so I'm not going to do it.That's it for now. I'm planning to leave the new version this way for 1-2 weeks and then, if everything is all right, replace the current one with it. Please let me know if you think there's something you think I should improve
  22. And 2918614, 2981580 and 2982791 for Windows XP Embedded (downloadable from Microsoft Update Catalog). You should be able to slipstream them directly into Windows XP source without modifying anything.
  23. I'm actually 100% sure that there is a way. Why? This is a modified version of Skype for Android. You are unable to use the official Skype 2.x any more because it won't allow you to log in (same thing as with Skype 4.2 for Windows described above). However, with the modified versions you can log in and make calls even with the oldest one (v2.0.0.47) which means that the limitation is purely artificial.
  24. You were right. This is what happens when trying to log in with Skype 4.2 in Windows 2000 Using Application Compatibility Launcher to run it in XP SP3 mode doesn't help as Skype just crashes then.
