  1. I am pretty good with a soldering iron, I once fixed mine using a paper clip, I cut a small piece of a paper clip the size of the pin, then with a soldering iron with a small tip I put a small amount of solder on it and it has been working ever since. Just a thought.
  2. that does not look like a normal windows error pop up box, look over her installed programs, she may have a third party software installed that does this.
  3. was this a ghost image on two identical computers? If so then the SID will match two and that can cause some problems? If this is an image then you can run a program like ghstwalk.exe to change the computer name and SID to one of the computers.
  4. program is not free but Veritas Backup Exec would do the trick. (now owned by Symantec)
  5. everyone will have thier favorite tool to use. I like using Drive Scrubber once you run this tool, you will have to reload the system back to factory restore. I would go that route because if you just delete files they can always be recovered with stuff like get data back for example.
  6. you could do several things, first if you have powertoys for windows xp, check to see if it is set to automatically log on the user, if it is uncheck that. If you do not have this, you could assign a password to your account, therefore it would pause waiting for you to enter that password, and in the mean time it would continue to load the services in the background. Also in the control pannel under user accounts, you can change the way users log on to the system. hope this helps
  7. does your computer automatically log in when you start your computer?
  8. is windows installing the driver automatically, or did you run the setup disk that came with the keyboard and mouse?
  9. it may be as simple as giving access to the folder where this game is installed, log on as yourself and then go to the folder, rightclick and do properties, then go to the permissions tab, and add the user you want to have access to that folder.
  10. they are probably getting bombarded with calls on reactivation oem versions of windows.
  11. good question, it will also help me in solving one of my issues that I have as well, thanks for all the good information.
  12. The only did it because msn did thiers, and they want to stay in the running, but it looks pretty good so far.
  13. then I would try that xcopy command. Just a thought, have you tried restarting your network hub, switch, or router? that happens to me sometimes and it goes away once I restart my switch.
  14. I run a total Dell shop, and the restore cd only installs windows xp, then you have to use the driver cd to install the drivers for the hardware. If he does not have that then he will have to download the drivers.
  15. have you tried hooking up a usb mouse, get you one and that may allow you to continue the install until it enables the usb keyboard again. Either that or the system is actually hanging during the install but you are unable to tell since you have no keyboard or mouse. I would get a usb mouse.
  16. Sweet, thanks that will save me lots of work and phone calls to MS$
  17. winxp and win98 do not network together very well. instead of browsing to the computers using network neighborhood try actually mapping the drives and see if that helps. Also if any file is being used by the win98 system you will probably get an error because the file is locked and in use. one good way to copy the entire folder or even the entire drive is to use the xcopy command. you can use XCOPY C:\*.* /E /H /K /R /C D: this command copies entire contents of c: to a drive called d: change your drive letters according to the mapped drives. Also you could add a folder at the end like d:\backup for example hope this helps.
  18. 17 MB is not that large, the thing to remember is to keep the registry from errors as opposed to size. you can use programs like ones mentioned here, or like Registry Mechanic, norton system works (win doctor) to get that registry cleaned up (just to name a few)
  19. maybe it is asking for a password because it is trying to access a password protected connection or mapped drive.
  20. I do not think this is possible, far as I know.
  21. I am with naughty on this for sure, the more you add or modify files on your system the less you will be able to recover. Use the get data back for ntfs.
  22. nothing is ever fool proof. check to see if it did not move the files someplace else. Also check to make sure it did not create a new profile for you, if it did, then the files are in the old profile. Also you could try some undelete software like File Rescue Plus, Get Data Back, file recovery pro, to name a few.
  23. I do not think that this is what you were asking for exactly but it may help you. I use a program called Adsgone and it blocks popups and banners on web pages as well as help stop adaware and also blocks messneger popups. Might be a good solution for you.
