  1. Before you try to nail it stop the Process called WinAdCtl.exe You could manually search the drive for that file and delete it after stopping the process. But I would still run AdAware or SpyBot to clean up anything else.
  2. This one works just fine on my Win XP box. AR Ram Disk
  3. Kids don't need a why other than that they were curious. Of course he could have been really angry too
  4. Assuming your are lacking a built in function that is proprietary to your particular system I would go to Control Panel > Power Options and make sure Hibernate is OFF and then select or create a Power Scheme that only turns off the monitor.
  5. Save as bitmap and use third party program to convert file format to jpeg IrfanView XnView both of these are very good programs. I lean slightly toward XnView as being easier to use. Or Choose Another That Strikes your Fancy
  6. Has it changed? Can one now use the unofficial 98SE service pack to update 98? Last time I tried it wouldn't work on anything except 98SE. Looking through the forum I didn't see an answer to this question.
  7. Windows 1.0 through 3.11 less commonly known as "Windows 16" because all versions where 16 bit Operating Systems and they all required the applicable (currently available) version of MS-DOS to be underneath as the DOS platform from which they were launched. What exactly do you mean by "operations"?
  8. Well if you have some patience wait for AutoPatcher version 5.0 to be released. It will include ability to update Win98. This is not something to expect tomorrow or even this month as the program is being written from the ground up as an upgrade to version 4.0. However, when it is done it will be most excellent indeed for this purpose The previous versions allready released do not include support for Win98 so there would be no sense in messing with them. Having used AutoPatcher 4.0 for my XP box I noted that user interaction is required as this program comes with much much more than just Microbloat updates and patches but it is well worth the time spent interacting with it to install patches and the like. But once you get past user selectable options AutoPatcher will "silently" install as you desire. As with any "silent" install some third party EULA acceptance questions may crop up depending on your choices. With some command line switch tinkering it can be run completely silent. The user interaction may change with version 5.0 so don't download 5.0 with the expectation that my experience with 4.0 will be precisely reflected. Autopatcher Website AutoPatcher Forum
  9. The only options available for AutoPartition are 0 and 1 neither of which do what you ask in all situations. Best bet would be to make use of Bart's Preinstalled Environment which will enable you to do what your wanting. Bart's Preinstalled Environment
  10. I'm having trouble with DOS 6.22 being called a "version of Windows". For the record my WinME box didn't crash repeatedly. I won't say it is was better than Win98 but I don't think it deserves the bashing. I think Win98SE was more unstable than WinME.
  11. I think this is answered by the answer to your third question. Description of the Windows 98 Setup Switches http://thpc.info/how/switches9x.html Microsoft Articles on MSBatch Detailed Information On Modifying MSBatch To Suit Your Needs Because you have written the MsBatch folder location without the correct switch. Setup does not accept this method. As already mentioned if your setup.inf file is named Msbatch.inf you only need to have it in the same folder as setup for it to be recognized and used e.g. there is no need for a switch or any mention of MSBatch.inf. If the setup.inf file has another name (which it might have if your experimenting with several different installation variables) you would have to name the file to be used after the switch. I've not done this for some time and the information I've read shows two different switches. So one of these three will work but I can't recall which. setup.exe -s test1.inf /IS /IQ /IV /IW setup.exe /s test1.inf /IS /IQ /IV /IW setup.exe /s:test1.inf /IS /IQ /IV /IW Of course if your setup.inf file is in a different folder you must name the folder location like this: setup.exe -s d:\testing\test1.inf /IS /IQ /IV /IW setup.exe /s d:\testing\test1.inf /IS /IQ /IV /IW setup.exe /s:d:\testing\test1.inf /IS /IQ /IV /IW

  13. How are you starting setup?
  14. Here are some reasonable suggestions and information about the infamous RedX issue. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6720
  15. I found this interesting quote from the webpage I link at the bottom. Apparently you were on the right track with Dfrg.msc. Perhaps it requires a different implementation. Maybe create a simple batch file that has the command in it and then run the batch file as a scheduled task. I would think you can leave off the userdomain business for your local computer. http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_defrag.htm
  16. Defrag is a task that may require administrative credentials. If you are not logged on with an admin account it may not run as expected. FYI here is the Knowledgebase article describing the new features for SP2 New features of the Scheduled Tasks Control Panel item that are included in Windows XP Service Pack 2 I avoid these types of issues with XP by dual booting with 98 and using Geodisk2 for scandisk and defrag. Works like a charm with no hassle

  18. mem type mem /? for switch information
  19. Normally this is indicative that the Inbox has become corrupted. The name of the file which that is the "inbox" is Inbox.dbx. As I recall the solution is to simply delete the inbox.dbx and force OE to recreate it. If you want to attempt save some of the emails in your bad inbox send them to yourself again BUT don't download them from the server. Close OE. Delete inbox.dbx. Run OE and then download them into the new folder.
  20. If you want you can directly download released hotfixes and updates from the Microsoft download site but I get the impression you'd rather not. The website linked below isn't terribly easy to navigate or glean useful information from. However, If you have not installed SP2 the latest release of Autopatcher contains every update, hotfix, a large number of registry tweaks, as well as some few useful third party application solutions. SP2 of course installs the updates and hotfixes that it does not supersede. In the future Autopatcher will be covering the updates and hotfixes for SP2. There is some delay of course between MS release and a release of an update by this third party. Autopatcher

  22. How about this: Windows Update Service is Unavailable'
  23. I would try this: Boot the system to the recovery console and use the command bootcfg /rebuild to rebuild the boot.ini file.
  24. The script may have simply turned off the service associated with Updates. go to Start > Run and type services.msc and right click the Automatic Updates service and click Properties and change it from disabled to Automatic. Also check to make sure the Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Event Log service are on Automatic. When you are finished it would be best to restart your system and then visit Microsoft Updates to see if you have been successful.
