  1. did you install Firefox or just Extract it? did you 'Browse' for the Firefox.exe in the 'Open With' window? then check the 'always use the selected program with this file type'.
  2. News (funny last paragraph): http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03/09/bittorrent_update/ Changes: http://www.bittorrent.com/bittorrent_versions.html
  3. you might have some bad drivers. try rebooting in Safe Mode (hold the F8 key during boot) uninstall your Video Card Drivers, reboot into Normal mode and install the proper drivers. Did you Flash your Video Card BIOS?
  4. i meant it lightly. Even if Linux has '2' viruses (I think thats right), he should be able to use almost any Linux LiveCD including Knoppix, to safely and easily backup his data. [edit] Also you would need root access, this makes it highly improbable. I know of the BartPE Avast CD (exp), and BitDefender LinuxDefender Live! (free) BootCD's. [edit] didnt notice you second post. If he can post, he probably download the distro, or use a public library, or ask a freind to download it. Its a good thing to have. Also worth mentioning is there are decent Free anti virus scanners, just advising not using Norton.
  5. 1) dude, you turn off system restore and then run anti-virus. 2) Norton is garbage, its bloated and not effective relative to other antivirus engines. Ex. Kaspersky, ZoneAlarm, etc. Norton is the AOL of antivirus. 3) Spyware and Adaware are "not a problem" if you use Firefox. The best thing for him to do is go start downloading some Linux Boot CD (also note how viruses dont affect linux) copy the good files he wants to some other location, run an antivirus program if he wishes (just for the fun of it), and THEN reformat at the end.
  6. thanks for the feedback, sorry to sound rude before, its just a very common computer issue. Welcome to MSFN.
  7. no dont just wipe the drive, backup your data first. You can Download Knoppix, its a free "Linux Live CD", it loads completely from the CDrom and doesnt touch the hard drive. You can use this to mount your Hard Drive, and Copy the files to another drive/network location/cd burner. Heres a Guide on how to do that (its easy): http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/
  8. control panel>folder options>file types tab select HTML and the like, hit the 'change' button and choose Firefox.
  9. You really need to use Google more, or try searching the forums. You are just trying to prevent some application or service from running on startup. Theres a nice free program called Autoruns that might help, google for it.
  10. its been released! http://xpize.portraitofakite.com/index.php
  11. open notepad or something like it, copy and paste what you want and save it as blah.reg. Be sure its not blah.reg.txt and be sure to have: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 at the top of the reg file.
  12. Im not sure if you can duplicate my results, btw the memory usage does vary on my machine too. But you could check some tweak guides out: 1 2
  13. have you tried selecting the text, and then trying to print to the Virtual Printer and choosing 'Selection'? FYI, There are Free Alternatives that should work: PDFCreator and CutePDF. you can also try asking here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/
  14. yeah that is what I reffered to by 'Tweaks'. I dont think that is really a 'memory leak' just a default setting considering many users have enough memory and are unaware of running processes. Personally I can have 20-30 tabs and 17 Extensions and only be using 50 or so MB. In the future here is a good place to find answers: http://forums.mozillazine.org/
  15. I think the reason its soo easy for microsoft is because they own DirectX. Games in Windows use DirectX, Xbox uses DirectX. However other companies cannot use DirectX since its owned by Microsoft. Also this tends to mean that many Xbox games are clones already on the PC. Microsoft also gets a significant advantage by making Xbox Next backwards compatible with DirectX9 while using DirectX 10 and Longhorn API's. This could mean MS may use its Market Advantage to try to compete with Dell for the Home PC in 2 years. So you will be using your Microsoft Xbox PC running Longhorn, with Xbox/Outlook Live, etc. Microsoft is really interested in 'subscriptions', meaning they hope to have you paying them in your monthly bills in a few years. This is specualtion though.
  16. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=37685 only about 1 month old too.
  17. did you tweak the settings perhaps to affect the 'Speed' of FF? Are you using Firefox 1.0.1? Do you have alot of tabs open with images etc?

  21. i have the gamecube, best console imo for several reasons, for everything else there's the PC. Reasons: Best Games (that arent already on the PC). Most Exclusive Games. Wavebird Controller is Awesome. Very Portable/Durable: light, small. Looks Great: Platinum/Small.
  22. why havent you mentioned anything about the 3 versions of "Xbox Next"? 1 With or Without a Hard Drive, and 1 as a Full PC (might have longhorn). http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19615
  23. look in the nlite forums for more, but basically just go into the system32 folder, rename winlogon.exe to winlogon.bak, and then copy minlogon into system32 and rename as winlogon.exe restart. You may need some registry tweaks, but im not sure about that. Be aware with minlogon, there are no user accounts, and no logon/logoff, just shutdown.
  24. dont rule out google...
