  1. I think it does matter as UR2 would probably overwrite bwc's kernel, so installing UR2 would give me a completely updated system and then I'd install the kernel extension afterwards.
  2. I did install manually. Basically I did it this way. I installed Windows 2000 with SP4 already slipstreamed into it. I then installed the ALPHA3 version of UR2. Then I installed bwc's latest kernel extension. I was stupid and redid my system to something I can use for now but I will right now get onto VMware and try to replicate the error. I will post here what I find.
  3. Thanks for the tip, bud. But there seems to be one problem. I'm not sure if this is in result of using the update pack or not, but when I go to right click on the disk drives in my computer, I get an explorer.exe exception which closes out My Computer but doesn't seem to affect Explorer itself. This never happened before and I didn't do anything else different from my last install. Another thing seems like I was missing msdmo.dll when trying to install Windows Media Player 9. It refused to install until it was in the system32 folder, which I had an XP version of the file. Any ideas?
  4. Can someone reupload this in English? The link seems to be dead. i lost this file in a stupid virus attack. Thanks.
  5. I've been using IRC for years and never had this until now, I did happen to see that when I was reading though. The server I use is systemnet.info if that helps. If we have to, we can always switch to something else.
  6. I was attacked viciously by this nasty virus last night. It started infecting so many exe files right before my eyes. I quickly turned off my computer before it could do anymore damage and disconnected my external drive which has all my important data on it. So, what the real question is is how can I protect myself on Windows 2000 so this doesn't happen again? The one thing I should make clear is I didn't have a firewall which I have downloaded since. But since I'm on Windows 7 for the time being, I thought I'd ask to see what you diehard Windows 2000 users do to protect yourself. I used the unofficial rollup to make sure I was completely patched and I also used blackwingcat's kernel extender as well. I had AVG 9.0 which was only out of date for a month since I hadn't obtained the latest updates. I use Google Chrome for my browser as I don't even touch IE6. The only thing I really do on my computer internet wise is visit this site, very rarely Facebook and I don't do anything on there worth even being there to be truthful. I check my email via Outlook 2003 and I chat every night with my fiancee on IRC. Other than that, I do nothing else internet wise so where I picked this up from, I have no idea. The virus did cause minimal damage to my external but AVG healed most of it but I lost my unofficial rollup which I can just get again. But I'm only on dialup so it's not like I have a fast connection to begin with. I would really appreciate some input because I'm not ready to throw in the Windows 2000 towel yet. I love that OS because it's very fast and as far as I'm concerned, better than anything else Microsoft has released. Windows 7 is very sluggish to me where Windows 2000 was nearly instant. Any input is greatly appreciated!
  7. I saw he had it posted on his blog, and I think he said you could but I can't remember off hand exactly.
  8. You are so awesome blackwingcat! Is this available now or when you release your new kernel version? Thanks everyone else for their tips too!
  9. This is something I haven't found out how to fix on Windows 2000, but I've found how to reverse what I'd like to do to Windows 2000 from Windows XP+ What I want to do is sort files in numerical order so when I click on sort by name, instead of files being sorted like this: 1, 10, 2, 20, 3, 30, I want them to be sorted like this: 1, 2, 3....10....20....30, is there a way I can make Windows 2000 sort files like that instead of the default way?
  10. That's strange, but it makes sense. I did get it installed and it runs, but the library is a bit messed up. It's not the end of the world now though. What are your future plans for the Kernel project?
  11. I still can't get Safari to work anymore, but that's okay. I found Google Chrome works perfectly with this new kernel update and had almost no problems installing it. So now I'm using it instead of Safari and it seems a lot more stable anyway. However, I want to give a big shout out to blackwingcat. You're simply amazing. You're keeping my favorite OS patched and making it compatible with almost everything new that is released. I have just recently succeeded installing Office 2007 with the new kernel and it works flawlessly. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this kernel extension, us Windows 2000 fans truly appreciate your hard work! I'm hoping I can get Windows Media Player 11 working well as I love the library layout much more than WMP10. I'm sure I can get it functional. Also, is there a way to get the sidebar from Windows 7 working? I've copied all the files from it and have it stored on my external hard drive. It seems it needs advapi32.dll to have EventUnregister, is there way to add that in?
  12. When I installed the new kernel package v15m, it seems that Safari no longer connects to the internet. My internet connection itself works fine but Safari always comes up with a cannot find server error. It has always worked for me in the past but it will not now. I'm suspecting iphlpapi.dll is the problem but I don't know for sure. I've tested both version 3.2.3 (prefered) and the new version 5 something and neither work. Any ideas?
  13. I'm a vivid fan of AVG and the new versions 2011+ do not support Windows 2000. I do realize version 9 is still supported but the question is for how long. I was able to extract the files via WinRAR and I modified the windows installer files so they would include Windows 2000 support, however, I still get a message saying that my operating system is not supported. I have used BWC's fcwin utility as well to set compatibility and that also doesn't work. Do anyone know what you could do from there to try and get it to work? I hate change and would rather stick with AVG since I've used it for a decade. Any help on the situation would be greatly appreciated!
  14. I'm sorry, I really shouldn't have said updated strings. Basically I meant to ask like what added benefits will we get from the added extensions in the new kernel32. For example, are there a few more programs that will work with this new v10 kernel that wouldn't before in the v5 kernel?
  15. You are very welcome! Thank you for keeping Windows 2000 alive for us! I've been testing it and it seems stable, I haven't run into anything bad yet. I'm curious though, do you know offhand what benefits we'll get from the updated strings in the new Kernel32 v10?
  16. It seems to be working! The installer worked properly and I'm not stuck in an endless reboot. I haven't tested it extensively yet but I will do that now.
  17. I have tried v10 kernel and by my results, it doesn't work. When I tried launching it in a VM, the package itself gave me an error about not being a valid Win32 application. I opened it with WinZip and forced the installation via setup.cmd, I got it installed, but now I'm in a permanent reboot loop, it doesn't even reach the login prompt or GUI for that matter.
  18. Personally, I'd rather Microsoft release a new OS like Windows 98. I miss the old, simple days of computing when your computer didn't need a bazillion GBs of RAM and hard drive space to run just the OS. I feel like Windows 7 is bloatware. Why does it need 15GB to install when Windows 98 was perfectly happy with 300-400MB? Windows 98 got the job done, didn't it? It also didn't need all those useless applications that nobody needs or wants. Not to mention, when you bought Windows 98, you already had it all. Now you have id*** 'versions' like Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. That's stupid! But then...that's marketing for you. You want it all? Then you pay $400 for that. I'd take Windows 98 over stupid Windows 7 any day.
  19. Thanks for the link! But I'm still not having any success with this. Has anyone gotten this working or know of a way how to. I tried RLoew's 137 and RAM patch to no avail. I also set MaxPhysPage, etc in system.ini but still it's just a black screen when I try booting it up to start the 3rd part of setup. Should I just install Windows 2000 and forget about Windows 98?
  20. Something that might help you if you can at least get a version of Windows on the laptop is use Everest Home Edition, it's almost certain you'll find the names of the drivers you're looking for and sometimes provides you with links to the hardware manufacturer.
  21. One big thing I can think of is no stupid product activation. I know it's there to protect Microsoft from being ripped off, but activating can be a real hassle. Also, 98 boots faster in my opinion. XP might seem to do okay after installation, but after being used for a while, it really begins to slow down. Just like with my installation of Windows 7, it's hardly a month old and I think it's slow even on a 2005 computer. As far as I'm concerned, Windows 98 has what you need to get your work done and it doesn't require a lot to run. With all the new Windows versions Vista and up, they require so much and really, just how different are they from Windows 98 except for all the stupid little graphical improvements which I think suck anyway. Windows Classic theme is the best as far as I'm concerned. And even if you set Windows XP+ to Windows Classic, it still doesn't feel the same to me. If you're going to be using Windows 98 for working with word processors and the like, then go with Windows 98 because it'll be enough to get the job done quickly and easily. Most games pre-2006 work on Windows 98 as well so if you're not a serious gamer like I am, then that's another reason to use 98 as it runs older games better anyway. Also, something else I loved about Windows 98 is it didn't have a bunch of stuff running in the background. You open up the task manager in 98, what do you usually see running in the background? Explorer and systray....that's just about all it needed! Look at 2000+, you have lsass.exe, csrss.exe, lsm.exe, svchost.exe, etc... so much memory being used up that Windows 98 didn't have to. That's why I'd say go with Windows 98 unless you absolutely need the features of 2000+. Plus, you just can't beat that awesome boot screen and login sound! <3
  22. Windows 98 holds a ton of memories for me, such as being the first OS I used when going online and the one I thought had the most awesome login sound ever! Truth is, I love it way more than Windows 2000. But anyway, back to my point. I'm attempting install on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop and even if I can't find drivers, I just want to get it installed and working just to say I did. Here's my current configuration. Intel Duo Core Centrino processor running at 1.6GHz x2 160GB Hard Drive 2GB of RAM I think that's all the basic information you need. Now, here's what I tried. Obviously, I tried just the regular install disk (second edition by the way). I get through the first part of setup, no problems. Reboot. Not enough memory to initialize Windows. Okay...so I set MaxPhysPage to 30000 and at the time, MaxFileCache to 131072. Reboot. Yay! It worked! Now the second part of setup continues. I get through that. Reboot. Third part. Windows 98 splash screen. Uh oh.....black screen. D: Called it a failed attempt. Next try. I slipstreamed the new service pack onto the CD which included the patched esdi_506.pdr file. Get through first part of setup just fine. Reboot. Aww, crap! Memory error again. So this time I set MaxPhysPage to 30000, MinFileCache to 4096, MaxFileCache to 131072 and the ChunkSIze to 1024. Reboot. Okay, second part of setup finishes. Reboot. Third part. Oh my...it's working! Third part just about begins....first I get a blue screen about some warning that the computer needs to use compatbility mode for something and will happen on reboot. Reboot. Third part of setup begins. Then I start getting file errors. One I think was desk.cpl...and there was something else I think had to deal with the time. Then....freezes....nothing else happens. Needs to be manually rebooted. Safe mode won't work...nothing else I try works. So, based on that information, would anyone know where I'm going wrong exactly? I feel ashamed to hold the title of a computer professional but this one has me stumped. I try reading stuff on the forums but it's so advanced for me, especially since I've been using 2000/XP for years now. Any help would be more than greatly appreciated. Edit: I better mention I used the full 160GB for one partition.
  23. I've run into this a lot of times and it's annoying! When I go into My Computer or any other folder, sometimes just randomly it'll bring up an Explorer.exe has generated errors and it'll just close out. The problem then just goes away for a while. I use KDW as well but I only use EZ install mode but I do use EZ KD Registry. Should I leave that cleared and not use it?
  24. I tried OpenDNS with no success. I still get DNS errors. Seems like my computer knows the site is online, it even found an IP, but it's like it rejects it's attempt to reach me. Temporarily disabling the firewall didn't work either. So I have no idea. (I have dialup internet).
  25. I had at one time installed WMP11 on Windows 2000. It worked to a slight degree, but not well. What I did was left BWC's special edited WMP10 files and unzipped them into a folder, then I unzipped WMP11 and one of the other exe's in the archive and put that in there as well. It installed and appeared to run but one thing that hardly worked was the library. No titles or anything showed up, just album art. That was a while ago though so I can't remember all that I had done and what worked and what didn't work. I also got Vista's games to work on 2000 as well (Like Spider Solitare, etc), which just required the v5 kernel32 and the kernel32 wrapper as well. I've tried getting WMM2.6 to work and I had once where it worked flawlessly except for missing icons in the program. But now it crashes when you try to save the video with a memory error. I'm trying to think of what else I had used wrappers for. I know at one time I tried getting the sidebar from 7 to work in Windows 2000 but EventUnregister is missing from advapi32.dll. I liked the weather gadgets ^^;. Other than that, I don't know what else. I wanted to try Google Chrome but the installer doesn't like me. I think because it wants me to download off the internet and I already have it downloaded as an installer. I have dialup so it makes it hard to download things when I want to. D:
