Like I said: to the "Server" copying is exactly the same thing as "Listening to music" and "Watching videos" Greetz, Peter.
-
What exactly do you mean by "Viewing"? Do you mean "Viewing" the directory listing or "Viewing" the content in a media-player on a client? If it's the latter: you can't, since "Viewing" (playing) content from another source is exactly the same as "Copying"; the file gets streamed (copied) to the player and the server cannot distinguish "Copying" from "Viewing". You'll need to really stream the content with DRM, if you want some sort of "protection" (and even that can be hacked). Greetz, Peter.

Of course, I'm also offering my help if anyone needs it I live in Oosterhout (near Breda), The Netherlands, Europe. I will not ask for any money (other than postage if applicable), but I also won't give you any guarantee I can fix your drive (though I will do my best). Greetz, Peter. -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs

At first glance it worked without any problems (even didn't update the firmware), but mundy5 advised me to do a "Short DST" test with SeaTools for DOS... ...which failed misserably --------------- SeaTools for DOS v2.17 --------------- Device 0 is Seagate Device ST3500320AS 9QM22HVN On Intel ICH5 Max Native Address 976773167 Device is 48 Bit Addressed - Number of LBAs 976773167 ( 500.108 GB ) This drive supports Security Features SMART Is Supported And ENABLED SMART Has NOT Been Tripped DST Is Supported Logging Feature Set Is Supported POH 5994 Current Temp 23 Started Short DST 2/12/2010 @ 11:37.4 DST -- FAILED - Read Element LBA = 0 Your SeaTools Test Code: A7E7D56A Short DST FAILED 2/12/2010 @ 11:37.16 ...but a "Long DST" test would run (only it took over an hour and a half) --------------- SeaTools for DOS v2.17 --------------- Device 0 is Seagate Device ST3500320AS 9QM22HVN On Intel ICH5 Max Native Address 976773167 Device is 48 Bit Addressed - Number of LBAs 976773167 ( 500.108 GB ) This drive supports Security Features SMART Is Supported And ENABLED SMART Has NOT Been Tripped DST Is Supported Logging Feature Set Is Supported POH 5994 Current Temp 23 Started Long Test 2/12/2010 @ 11:38.8 Your SeaTools Test Code: A7E7D55A DST -- FAILED - Read Element LBA = 963648851 Short DST FAILED 2/12/2010 @ 13:20.9 [ 963580219 -- Repaired ][ 963581115 -- Repaired ] [ 963582011 -- Repaired ][ 963628659 -- Repaired ] [ 963629555 -- Repaired ][ 963631507 -- Repaired ] // JUST A LONG LIST OF REPAIRS HERE // [ 963993720 -- Repaired ][ 963994614 -- Repaired ] [ 963994615 -- Repaired ][ 963994616 -- Repaired ] [ 963995510 -- Repaired ][ 963995511 -- Repaired ] DST -- FAILED - Read Element LBA = 964028566 Short DST FAILED 2/12/2010 @ 13:21.0 Long Test PASSED After Repair 2/12/2010 @ 13:21.0 I then filled in an RMA, giving the test-code returned by SeaTools ("A7E7D56A") and I had to ship the drive back to Seagate (after I had done the full wipe) A couple of days later they return the other drive pictured in my previous post. So check the drive first with SeaTools for DOS: if it does give you an error test-code return it to Seagate, if not: I think it's safe to say it's okay (and then you could do the firmware update if you wish). Please be aware that SeaTools for DOS does not support all types of SATA chipsets; it refused to see my drive when connected to a Promise controler (as I soon found out). Greetz, Peter. -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
VideoRipper replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I will not start bashing i365 again (I already did on page 123) In fact they don't... They don't even acknowledge there's a problem with the firmware and they'll direct you to the company I will not mention here and these guys will ask you money for the operation (900 Euro's in my case... excluding VAT) After having resolved the problem myself (for around 10 Euro's on parts and a few minutes of my time), I backed up all essential data, did a zero-fill format using SeaTools for DOS and returned the drive under warranty. A few days later I got this drive in return: As can be seen, it's a repaired 7200.11 drive with the newer SD1A firmware, not another type of drive. Greetz, Peter. -

Need help: 2.5 external hdd required a driver
VideoRipper replied to CrazyDoctor's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Ewww... that sucks I haven't seen those drives in the past yet, didn't even know they existed until now. On the images I can see a few unused pins, possibly these can be used by the manufacturer to test the drive or maybe even access the drive directly over SATA, but since we don't know anything about these yet, there's not much help I can give at the moment. External Hard Drive Woes
VideoRipper replied to MyDisplayName's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Just like jaclaz says, it looks like a normal SATA-connector and it wouldn't surprise me when it actually is just a piggy-back PCB screwed onto the drive I think that when you remove the screws holding the board, you can simply slide off the PCB from the drive in the direction of the arrow in my picture Greetz, Peter. -
External Hard Drive Woes
VideoRipper replied to MyDisplayName's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Yes I know, but they're not as common as 2.5" and 3.5" enclosed drives. Most of them can be found in iPods and small laptops, but you're right. There are also special adapters available for these 1.8" drives and they're not that expensive either, though I don't own one, since I hardly ever come across 1.8" drives. Maybe I should buy a couple (the 50-pin, ZIF and micro-SATA versions), just to make my collection complete Greetz, Peter. -
External Hard Drive Woes
VideoRipper replied to MyDisplayName's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
All external (2.5") drives I've seen are just normal drives in a small enclosure and can be attached directly to a computer. With P-ATA drives you would need a simple adapter that converts the pin-spacing from the 2.5" to a regular 3.5" connector while a SATA drive can be connected as is. There are also 1.8" drives around, but these will only be found in embedded devices like MP3-players and if you want to connect these to a PC, you'll need a special adapter with powerconvertor. Sometimes you'll have to strip everything away to get to the actual drive, but 999 out of 1000 times it really is just a standard drive. Greetz, Peter. -
The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs

I only see one image and no sound-file But, by the looks of it, it looks like you're suffering from that other infamous thing called "The click of death", which sounds similar to "Rrrrr-tick Rrrr-tick" There are some things about this problem on the internet (though I haven't seen any real solutions to it...), but it's not related to the problem discussed in this thread. Greetz, Peter. -
Don't think you're in luck... I had to switch from Win2000 to XP a few years back, because there wasn't any support for it (of any kind) on pre-XP OS'es; even considered that the kernels and OS-structure of 2k and XP are similar, while there's a major difference between 9x and XP... Greetz, Peter.

Firmware can often been found on the website of the manufacturer. Replacement parts... nowhere to my knowlegde and with a lot of drives it isn't even possible to swap PCB's, even if the drive it came from is exactly the same (or even from the same batch) as the defective one. But if you don't believe me and want to see for yourself, try Google ...and you were planning on replacing the heads? I assume you have access to a clean-room and the necessairy tools... Greetz, Peter.

No real ideas here, but I suggest you make regular backups of your precious data while you still can (and of course: backup to another drive or CD/DVD, not the same drive that gives you trouble). While some tools may report no problems at all, it's never a guarantee Greetz, Peter.

The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
VideoRipper replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
In my experience, the board of the drive isn't that picky (at least not on the drives I tried) about the used voltages, as long as it's below about 5Volts. I un-bricked my ST350032AS drive with a standard MAX232 (5V) RS232<=>TTL convertor and it worked flawlessly. Of course this isn't a guarantee, so your mileage may vary, but unless you've put more than 5 Volts on it there's not much to worry about, I guess... However: I did fry a PATA-drive the other day by accidently applying 12V, instead of 5V, to one of the other pins (it were the Master/Slave-pins) and the PCB instantly became very hot, with everything blown to pieces (it really was entirely dead after that). Problem loading Windows Vista 64 after Seagate Firmware fix
VideoRipper replied to DoomN00b's topic in Windows Vista
Since you're using the infamous 7200.11 drive (originally with SD15 firmware) I suggest you first checkout the entire drive using Seagate's SeaTools for DOS, before deciding to keep on using that drive and trying to revive the OS. Even after the SD15-firmware BSY bug you solved, the drive is still not reliable; I've heard rumours that even the newer SD1A firmware didn't solve the BSY problem. I also had to revive my drive last week and at first it looked okay, but when doing the tests it seemed that a lot was wrong with it, so now it's on its way back to be swapped Your drive is most likely also still under warranty and if SeaTools isn't able to do a quick DST-test and/or comes with a large list of repaired sectors after a long DST-test you'd better backup the drive and return it while you still can. There's a great chance the sectors that make up your MBR are screwed... Greetz, Peter. -
I'm not the kind of person that likes to say: "Me too", but... "Me too" Using XP and IE7 at the moment, I have to log on each time I revisit the site and when I try to reply using "Full edit" I sometimes get the errormessage that my operation wasn't legal (or something similar to that) and should be logged in, while it clearly says at the top-left "Logged in as: VideoRipper ( Log Out )" Greetz, Peter.

The Solution for Seagate 7200.11 HDDs
VideoRipper replied to Gradius2's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
I'm not familiar with that board, but it looks like a "Normal" USB <=> RS-232 adapter with separate TTL outputs. You did connect it to your PC using the USB end and leaving the 9-pin sub-D connector disconnected, did you? Also make sure you've set hardware flow-control to "None". During my tests with other drives, I noticed that some older models use 9600 Baud instead of 38400 Baud (though these were 7200.7 PATA drives). Greetz, Peter. -
Would this page help you perhaps? Greetz, Peter.

Don't know if this is of interest, but I noticed this post too: No more support for Windows 98 of Avast Greetz, Peter.

What type of drive do you use and what's the firmware-version? Greetz, Peter. -
Actually, the error message says exactly what the problem is: I had the same problem a while back (I do have real domain-names and static IP's), but Hotmail is very strict when it comes to e-mail sent from unknown or dynamically allocated hostnames. They do it as a spam-protection countermeasure; it's fairly easy to set up a mail-server, spam the hell out of other mailservers from a dynamically allocated (or from within a normal household) IP-address and pull the plug when finished, starting all over again the next day from another IP. There's not much you can do about it, other than to register a domain and wait until it's acknowledged by Hotmail. (It took my domains about a month or so before e-mail from them were accepted) Greetz, Peter.
