  1. It goes without saying that for best results, it is recommended that a fresh installation source of windows xp be used for integration. However, if you can provide me with the description in the application of the current step when the error occurs, I could try to pin-point the actual problem. If not, I could provide you with a debugging version that could help identify exactly what is happening...
  2. It's my understanding from the XP licensing agreement that the licensing terms follows the product key, and not the media used to install it with. Hence, how network installations are allowed legally.
  3. You know, I think the end-users are spoiled by developers such as nuhi, ryanvm and myself. We spend hours and hours developing and working on FREE tools for the community and often not, people b***h because we don't adhere to an active timeline. We develop as we can and people get new versions and bug fixes as we have time to get around to them. We all have lives outside of the free products we develop for the community and it's a suprise that people such as nuhi manage to squeeze in as much development as they do, I know from experience that it's not easy.

There is also the rare instance where this can happen in relation to VNC. It's strange and rare. I don't think anyone has ever managed to pin doing exactly what causes this behavior.
  5. That's the result of improper grounding, usually from an on-board sound card. A good quality sound card should not do that.
  6. If you pick an 8 character alpha-numeric password, I wouldn't worry. As for the secret question? I'd put as many random characters as possible. Personally, I think secret questions are the stupidest security flaw ever invented. It's like a public back door to your password. Check out this article about the effects of password lengths and character combinations.
  7. No one makes [computer specific] speakers like Logitech.
  8. Dude, we did the same thing as kids... we're just older now!
  9. XXCOPY has never failed me. What a great app.
  10. You'd have to throw it in a computer with Windows already installed as a secondary drive and use something like Active Undelete on it.
  11. You just have to go progressively, you can't dammage the processor by running the FSB faster, where the chances for damage can start is when you start raising the voltage. Start by raising the FSB, try something like 145MHz see if it's stable, and keep going up until it's unstable, when it becomes unstable, raise the voltage a little bit to see if it can help the stability. There's a lot of articles on the net which go into great detail on how to overclock.
  12. Personally, I'd overclock the Celeron instead of the PIII since the PIII 1GHz was one of the jewels of it's generation.
  13. You kind of forgot one of the more important ones... Winamp.
  14. I've identified part of the problem. The issue occurs in part because of Diskeeper 2007. If I uninstall it, the problem goes away. As soon as it is re-installed, the problem comes back. However, I'm not certain that Diskeeper is solely responsible. During the 60 - 90 second hang, Windows remains responsive, everything seems normal except I cannot access the network or the internet. Outlook will hang, IE will remain responsive yet will not be able to access any webpage (it keeps searching for it like a down server) and accessing the network hangs Explorer. AnyDVD also refuses to load during this hang. I can load most applications during the hang, things like Notepad have no issue starting during the hang. As soon as the system un-hangs itself, everything goes back to normal. AnyDVD loads, the internet and the network become accessible. I know the hang is over when the AnyDVD icon shows up in my system tray. I have three applications that load on start-up. AnyDVD, Serv-U and Diskeeper. If you need a list of other system processes, services, background applications or anything else, let me know. PM sent for the memory dump.
  15. Dude, chill and get off your horse.
  16. You're MacGyver, right?
  17. Almost 100,000 forum members... someone's must have an answer to this. SOMETHING hangs when I login. I'm not sure if it's a boot-hang or a login-hang, but something hangs. Before anyone even says it, I did try BootVis. Unfortunately, for some odd reason, it won't trace anything other then Disk I/O and Process Creation. I'm guessing the problem revolves around a driver perhaps but since BootVis won't trace driver delays, I'm out of luck. Does anyone know a method I could use to identify what's hanging?
  18. where to set that ?? Right-click on Shell Folders in the left pane of RegEdit, choose Permissions... If it appears, change the Everyone user to Read Only. If it appears, change the SYSTEM user to Read Only. This will prevent malware from changing the settings.
  19. Good job mate.
  20. Doing so should be said with warning because you will no longer be able to view the AVI properties within Explorer.
  21. I remember reading a study they did using high quality verbatim media, stored under ideal conditions, in the dark... at 6 years, the data was readable. At 7 years however, data loss was starting to occur and it was near impossible to read discs without defects.
  22. You would configure those options in the wireless connection manager that came with your wireless network card driver.
  23. If all else fails, the only way left to speed up loading times would be to upgrade your hard drive. Either using a high density hard drive like a 500GB Western Digital or an extremely fast 150GB Western Digital Raptor, or go RAID for even more speed.
  24. If you're like me and you hate desktop search applications, you've installed Office 2007 and you keep getting nagged in Outlook to install Windows Desktop Search with an annoying "Click here to enable Instant Search" tooltip, turning it off is easy. In Outlook 2007, go to Tools -> Options -> Other -> Advanced Options and remove the check for "Show prompts to enable Instant Search". More information about instant search
  25. Also, most of the time that happens with large AVIs, usually 700mb movies and things as such. Often, if you click on it, wait for the information to appear in the status bar of explorer, THEN try to delete it, everything's fine. If that still doesn't work, then I would also recommend using Unlocker.
