  1. I picked that CPU because it's the cheapest Intel CPU you can buy at the moment. At 2.66GHz even if it has a smaller cache then a Pentium or is only single cored or is not a Core 2, still is 2.6 times faster then what you're used to. However, the motherboard I picked supports up to the Core 2 Extreme, which means that no matter which CPU you'd like to upgrade to down the line in the next two years or so, you'll be able to.
  2. My suggestion is as follows: Antec SLK1650B, $69.99 ASUS P5L-VM, $94.99 Intel Celeron D 331 Prescott 2.66GHz, $51.00 OCZ Value Series 1GB DDR2 667, $99.99 Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM 8MB SATA, $43.99 Pioneer DVR-111D DVD+/-RW, $31.99 Total Cost: $391.95 (+ taxes) If you want a basic dedicated video card, you could just add something like ASUS EN6200LE @ $35.99.
  3. Compress it using WinRAR. My 2GB MEMORY.DMP became 85MBs.
  4. My recommendation is the Pioneer DVR-K16.
  5. The difference you're speaking of is so minimal and so unimportant that it has no bearing whatsoever on the results. Unless they start including GeForce 6600 GTs on-board, then on-board video will always be slower then dedicated video cards. Today's NorthBridge and SouthBridge chips, as well as the interconnects are so advanced that the difference between on-board and slot is neglible at best. And by the way, most on-board components are directly wired to the south-bridge, the same chip to which the slots are wired to.
  6. You should also check to make sure that you have DMA enabled on all your IDE channels by going into Device Manager and insuring that all IDE Channels are set to "DMA if available".
  7. That's a bit of a bold statement. I personally have never disabled themes, and I have never known anyone else who did. I think the percentage of people that disable themes is very low, hence the popularity of such things as the Royale theme or other custom visual themes.
  8. To my knowledge, ICS only works properly with two network cards. One you'd plug the modem into, the other you'd plug the switch with your 10 computers all of which should be able to get the IP using DHCP. Obviously, a broadband router is a much cleaner and simpler choice. If you already have a switch, then you could pick up a router without an internal switch such as the Linksys BEFSR11.
  9. I seriously doubt that. Obviously if it was leaked before it even hit stores then someone down the production line made a copy and the leak was internal, but to say it was intentional, I wouldn't say so. I'm sure there's been some internal investigations done at microsoft.
  10. It can be hard to judge how little is good enough since a lot is subjective to personal tastes. It's like the speed of the internet. I'm on 10Mbit cable, for me anything slower is abysmal, yet some people have are quite happy with 600Kbps cable, or uncomprehensibly, with dial-up 56Kbps. I guess in the end it all comes down to what minimum is good for you.
  11. You're comparing modern day technology with technology from ages ago. Of course it's the case. If I compare a Celeron D to a PII of couse the Celeron wins. Even the god awful ATI Radeon X300 beats out the Intel GMA 900 by a landslide: http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1617355,00.asp
  12. FairUse4WM, it's all I can say.
  13. Go back into safe mode and uninstall your video card as well as your monitor, reboot back in normal windows (everything should work now). Install the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer's site (ATI or nVidia) then install the drivers from your monitor from the manufacturer's site (whichever make it is).
  14. Usually people use 8080 when 80 is blocked.
  15. I don't know how many dozens of computer's I've seen have such problems running even the most basic of flash animations with on-board video. I've upgraded so many of my client's computers from on-board video and every single one of them have noticed the improvements. Generally, it translates to a smoother windows experiences. Smoother scrolling in webpages, no jittering in flash and generally making the computer feel "lighter". I never said anything about buying a 8800 GTX instead of on-board, I usually sell them an nVidia FX5200 for no more then $40 CAD.
  16. Even though my ISP allows me to run servers from my connection, will they prevent me from using port 80? If so, why? Some ISPs block port 80 to prevent people from running web servers specifically. Usually FTP is allowed, but HTTP and SMTP are usually blocked, else everyone would host their websites from home. To test this would be simple, if the server responds to a ping but does not respond to HTTP over the internet yet does respond to HTTP internally, then chances are that 80 is blocked. Unless you're behind a router and the port isn't forwarded properly.
  17. First off, the post is in the General Discussions forum, so who cares what it's about... hence the name of the forum. Second, so because a mod started the thread, it's abuse? So once you're a mod, free speech goes out the windows, is that it? Third, if you don't like the thread, don't read it. If you have a problem with the way the forum is run, why are you still here?
  18. Depends on the method of P2P. Torrents are generally trustworthy because no one keeps seeding things they don't trust. Some networks, however, are full of virii (Kazaa and eDonkey spring to mind).
  19. AVG Free Edition does not have time bombs.
  20. Also, make sure the windows server machine is not trying to act as a DHCP server.
  21. Some ISPs block port 80.
  22. PCI Express will eventually replace ALL PCI cards, that includes video cards, network cards, RAID cards, and whatever else that used to work with PCI.
  23. UL is the uncompressed update list. ULZ is the compressed update list. When WUD is first run, it is associated with the ULZ file extension so that when you open a ULZ file, it will extract the UL and save it to the WUD program directory. The point is so that you can just click on the UL you want on the WUD home page, and instead of doing Save As... you choose Open, and the UL will automatically be installed.
  24. On-board video just doesn't measure up to a dedicated video card. They use shared memory, share the CPU, share almost all system resources. The drivers are usually below average as well. Even some small games won't even start with on-board video.
  25. Even the cheapest of all video cards will offer you a better end-user experience then any built-in video.
