  1. I also have to say build your own.. Because the few prebuild computers that I have messed with had old out dated parts ,,,,,, and the price tag was high....... The pre built companies where selling them as new an improved .. What is really funny is the people that bought the pre built computers got mad at me when I told them they got took by the pre built computer company xyz. DELL was the company xyz that took people the most ,,,,,,,, You need to have the ATA 133 hard drive speeds and at least 1 GB of RAM in order to get the ball rolling......... Most of the pre built companies only give you 256MB ram and a older slow hard drive,,,,,,,,, that makes for slow computing ..... The wind is blowing against you........ and the video cards are old out dated ones to..... so build it yourself it is not that hard today....... in the old days you had to set 50 jumpers and hope for the best..........
  2. Hi! all I am having to write a batch file to install some stuff on my wife's cousin computer cause her cousin has no idea how to install the files by hands,, But my questions is the start /w part of the normal install of windows XP or do I have to add a helper file .... Like the sleep command is a extra file called sleep.exe I'm going to included all the extras and the batch files in a executable zip file.... so all she will have to do is download and save it to her desktop and then double click the file.. I know she can do that much........ Mac!
  3. LOL I like that one............... You don't mind if I use that on yahoo when the Linux nerds start posting use Linux ,,,,,,,, I find every time there is a article on windows they start there get Linux ,,,,,,,, And when you post learn how to lock down windows they come unglued ,,,,,,,,,, Yahoo seems to post crap on how the sky is falling all the time.. They are all clueless on how to use windows the proper way........ Windows out of the box trust everyone and software vendors gives you the keys to lock the door ..
  4. it is just the way it is........ programs leave stuff behind when you remove them...... and if you want to play like I do get an extra hard drive then play........... and when you find a program you like then and only then do you add it to your everyday hard drive,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I throw out 99.9% of all software that I try cause they just don't work like advertised....
  5. system restore is a joke........ just like the admin account and limited user accounts are a joke........ Those so called register cleaner are a joke to. they remove what you need to keep..... the best way is to do a hand clean up.... could be a driver issue..... do you have a crappy CD in the tray ........ shut down useless aervices and use a program like regrun to look at what is starting up....... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download531.html
  6. The title itself says "user friendly OS", Windows indeed! No doubts! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> My point to "user friendly OS", as I stated above
  7. I don't want to start a flame war drive here but if you really look at the average home user smuck they barely know where the power switch is. So, how the heck would they be able to tweak linux.......... Windows is setup for plug and play all the way baby...... now for me LINUX sucks cause the driver support is slim to none... and I run mobile docks and LINUS will not support that either.......... Ever time I try Linux the kernel crashes for some stupid reason so weigh the difference do the same in windows no crashs......... I donot have the patience to figure out why........ or how to fix it, windows software is so much better.. When you get a crappy application just look for a new vendor that has program that works.. Too many to choice from..... An as far as windows goes learn how to lock it down so you will not get infected.......... I DO say LINUX OS sucks BUT I throw 99.9% of windows 3rd party vender's software that I test drive in the waste can cause it doesn't work.............
  8. I vote "Remove the silly poll." too on the account of I'm tried of stupid Linux users cutting down Windows......... Linux is a want-ta-be OS...... and if it was so great it would have the market share of users,,,, Every time I play with Linux it crashes... cause it will not do what windows does so nice and easy..... Please don't compare the home user Linux distros with the server Linux not the same animal ........ The average smuck has no idea how to turn the power switch let allot have to set up stuff in linux.... Linux is not for the average smuck home user.. for me Linux doesn't support Mobile docks the kernel crashes when you move drives around......... Linux for me has poor support for driver on my system....... My last point is learn how to lock windows down to keep out the bad boy stuff... and don't use the excuse of why should I add software to keep the stuff out it is just the way it is........... some Linux users do the big B about how windows uses pagefile.sys Linux does the same thing but splits the drive up into paritions.... LOL yes You can load Linuz and go on the internet from the start,,, You can do the same thing with Mac's Windows XP Pro Distro..... Plus Mac's Windows XP Pro Distro includes security lock down........ if both where free or both where pay for I would pick windows
  9. The default user profile is just a trick of the eye........... when you are installing windows XP the stuff you add to the register you by added to the HKCU........ after you reboot and make a profile it is then a hidden profile....... the space between the Default and user causes problems sometimes you can use qoutes to cure that and where the quotes go depends on what you are doing///// here is a thread to play with I don't run profiles............. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...efault+User+SID and you might want to play with this some vbs script........... I use VBS to play with files copying and moving you could add a Environment variable during the windows install to point to the C:\Documents and Settings\Default User Like I did the XPCD ............... so it would look something like this dfup = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%defaultuserprofile%") also add Dim dfup or dfup = "C:\Documents and Settings\Default User" On Error Resume Next 'Declare var's and objects Dim WshS, fso, sysr, sysd, home, aup, cpf, pf, up, XPCD Dim strFolderName Set WshS = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") 'Expand Environment 'Create const's to spare time and place sysr = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%SystemRoot%") sysd = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%Systemdrive%") home = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%Homepath%") aup = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%AllUsersProfile%") cpf = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%CommonProgramfiles%") pf = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%Programfiles%") up = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%UserProfile%") XPCD = WshS.ExpandEnvironmentStrings("%XPCD%") strFolderName = up & "\Application Data\AdShield" If Not fso.FolderExists(strFolderName) Then fso.CreateFolder(strFolderName) End If fso.CopyFile XPCD & "\Securityfiles\adshield.abl", up & "\Application Data\AdShield\adshield.abl" , true fso.CopyFile XPCD & "\Prog\AdShield\license.txt", pf & "\AllStar\AdShield\license.txt" , true all depend on how you deal with it........ IT is my bed time but here is a copy and past from an old post of mine from another site............... I don't use user account because of the way the register works... I hate the way it works... Think of the register this way it is a cd player with a multi CD disc tray,,, one tray has a CD with a lid over it is sealed you can not log onto the spot never.... all the rest of the trays are open face.... you switch CD's when you change users.. The admin slot is open face... just like the rest IT IS THE SAME AS ALL USERS but it has a different number IN THE REGISTER... and they use a B.S> name called admin.. it is a regular desktop... profile.... what ever you want to call it... here is the kicker if some one messes up there cd you can replace that... But if someone messes up the CD player(the CD player is the shared part of the register) you are all screwed,,,, EVEN THE ADMIN ACCOUNT is history... on my computer I have managed to not use the admin account(never created one) it is really a joke slot... And I have removed the seal from the hidden default profile.. I have no users... The only user is the HIDDEN default desktop that I remove the seal from.... The problem is most software when you install it on bob's desktop tom and jane and bill will not see it... If bill changes stuff to his liking like the knobs on the front of the CD player you all get that setting......... One other thing is all desktop are created from the hidden sealed desktop which never gets updated again once you start to use users,,,, windows XP forces you to create a user when it gets done installing so you are screwed from the start.... ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ So to answer you question to install before or after what you install will be seen on that desktop you are on.. and when you creat a new user they get a copy of the sealed CD,,, Not what you added ...... I hope you can also see how that will affect the rest of the register the shared part... some programs will not install on a second desktop cause they see it in the shared part of the register... what a mess........... They will ask do you want to repair or remove... OH boy things are getting hairy here,,, they see the uninstall register keys... I use a combo of Vb script and register files to remove the sealed tray cover ... I have one CD and one CD player box......... I use moble hard drive docks to switch users,,,, when you want to use the computer you slide your hard drive in... SO now if you f-up yours ... Tom bill and jane still have perfectly good desktop and hard drives.. Just remember all users share parts of the same register ... ........ NOT GOOD....... So even by limiting them they still can screw the shared part of the register or program folders up.... Limited account is a joke to................ I guess I better shut up now!... The windows register is one of my pet peeves...... just like Ex smokers are worse than people that never smoked. and you will see non-smokers giving a smoker a bad time while the non smoker is burning there brain with a cell phone by there ear.... Hope this helps.... Mac!

  11. LOL M$ got into a big knock down fight over java and discontinued it I uploaded it to rapidshare for you it VM 3810........ http://rapidshare.de/files/2879647/JavaMS3810VM.zip.html if you don't know how to use rapid share ask............ the key is to scroll down..... click free wait for the timer to time out.... on the next page also to the other poster I have found many things that don't work with sun java.... cause they are looking for M$java
  12. I managed to load some funky programs that I like but they make the computer slow to shut down... So if you have that issue with you computer try this Worked for me!!!!!! I have shut down the service for now cause I tracked the issue back to a speaking clock... I installed a different speaking clock now... Microsoft web page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...en&Hash=XDSFJFF README IT EXPLAINS MORE http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.as...ac%2freadme.txt SERVICE to install http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info.as...Clean-Setup.msi WHAT IS UPHCLEAN ================ UPHClean is a service that once and for all gets rid of problems with user profile not unloading. You are having profile unload problems if you experience slow logoff (with Saving Settings for most of the time while logging off), roaming profiles that do not reconcile, or the registry size limit is reached. WHY DO PROFILES NOT UNLOAD? =========================== Many system and service processes do work on behalf of users. When the work is done the system or service process is responsible for releasing handles it has to the user profile hive. If this is not done by the service as the user logs off the profile cannot be unloaded. This problem in code can be caused by improper coding either in Microsoft software or 3rd party software (e.g. printer drivers, virus scanner service, etc). With the information provided by the system there is no way to find out what software needs to be corrected to allow profiles to unload.
  13. integrated or not to integrate.. I like to leave the original files as much as possible original cause when a new update comes out it easier to change later. I use the SVCPACK.INF and when they come up with a new list I do a min install then update the [setupHotfixesToRun] list......... when you integrate you have to redo the integration after major updates anyway to me just a waste of time... I have played and always go back to SVCPACK.INF...... There have been issue/conflicts with integrating update so using the SVCPACK.INF clears those issues,,,,,,, But like I tell people you can do it how ever you want it is your computer Just my two cents... Mac!
  14. I have a question why are trying to reinvent the wheel and not just use the full installer that was posted above. ..... http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=43264 M$ already made a package to install the V6 site file......
  15. I had the v5 on my computer and it offered the V6 site.... I ended up using this file WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe cause it was plain and simple I installed it using the HKCU runonce key ........... why reinvent the wheel M$ has it all packaged up already.........
  16. ok Thanks then this site search engine needs a little help cause I tried many search words and didn't find that one what words did you use to search with
  17. I have places to go and people to see but I did manage to trap the new files using a play hard drive so you can add them to you CD ....... There is an old thread some where that tells how to add the V5 site,,,,,,,, I zipped them up and uploaded them to rapid share there is also a jpg in the zip file that has the url to the files....... http://rapidshare.de/files/2695086/updates.zip.html enjoy........... Got to go....... Mac!
  18. LOL ROLMFAO at you all it is not made to work that way.........
  19. add the reg keys to the HKCU during the T-12stage using the cmdlines.txt BUT BEFORE you create any users then when you create the first user it will inherit the default users settings... here is an example of allot of things..... I call the T-12stage.cmd from the cmdlines.txt and the T-12stage.cmd calls other files... part of my tweak are installed when the hive are set up in the begining and then I reinforce them here from the T-12stage.cmd.. 21. LOL it is not what you are doing is wrong it is Maxtor makes a great fast hard drive but they fail allot......... If your getting corrupt files RMA that sucker.. I hate to tell you this but the next time I buy a large drive it will not be maxtor... For every drive that I bought from Maxtor I RMA the bad boy at least 4 times.. Before I got a good one.. MY 160 GB one took a crap last month and is past the one year mark.. my 200 I use as backup cause it can't handle the load as the main drive..It works great as a backup. and is paste the trade in date.. I use the old 80GB as a play drive --works OK and I have a 40 Gb that I use as storage seems OK.. and I have the wife on a 250GB .. just knock on wood I did have to RMA that one when it was new out of the box ...... Just Do the RMA thing when they ask you what is the CODE just tell them it is not seen by the system... and you can't here it spin up.. That means DEAD drive to them ... They will do a RMA on it... if you say it works they will have you do a bunch of bull s*** test... when you run the setup test stuff it will turn on the write verify for so many days then the failers will start again been there done that..... RMA the sucker till you get a good one.... When you format with DOS it will not see the whole drive so you will only get part of the drive........ what happen to the rest you will ask later???????????? and you may not see this issue if you parition the drive under the dos limits.... all depends........... I did try some western digital ones years ago but they corrupt from the get go.. after trading three in at the store I call lemon law ...... LOl when I was RMA the drives some of the ones I got back where worse than the one I sent in.. so check out them out very carefully...... The reason I started doing RMA is cause I almost got into a knock down drag out fight at one of the stores.... The A88hole went in the back and didn't even install the drive correctly then he came out there and said oh there is nothing wrong with it.. I went into the back room walking right past him and show him why and how.. and he stilll wanted to argue... what was funny the tech siad that is the way Maxtor runs... BS on them cause the maxtor tech support was the ones that told me to take them back..... to make a long story short what I have found is maxtor plops the drives in box and we are the quality testers... and they have very a high failer rate... Also all those fancy test programs they have are B.S. cause the maxtor drives will pass all the test but fail when you use them in the system.. The test do not move the heads around fast enough to cause the in the system failers,,, Let us see some test that make the heads access all over the plators ramdomly ... That is where they fail and then you get corrupted files... If the maxtor drive makes any loud load noises that ia a faulty one...... Maxtor says the drive should be very very quiet,,,,,,,,, LOl most all of the drive I got from the box new sounded like a train...... Good luck with yours... P>S>The 250 GB that I have the wife using is very very quiet and fast,,,,,,,,No failers no corrupted files.. and no system hangs..... Mac!
  22. Been there done this,,,,,,,, Get a maxtor adaptor card ... get the latest drivers here........ http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads/Accessories&downloadID=10 then add the drivers as per the greenmachine site you can start here http://unattended.msfn.org/intermediate/drivers/raid.htm also make it so the winnt.sif will not format the drive and add the drivers to the winnt.sif file NOTE DO NOT LET M$ DOS FORMAT THE DRIVE Download MaxBlast 4 For Windows http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads/ATA%20Hard%20Drives&downloadID=58 Maxtor formats the drive total different use the maxtor setup disc to set the drive up then install windows from the CD BEEN THERE DONE THAT...... winnt.sif for ref ;SetupMgrTag [Data] AutoPartition = 1 MsDosInitiated = 0 UnattendedInstall = Yes AutomaticUpdates = No [Unattended] UnattendMode = FullUnattended OemSkipEula = Yes OemPreinstall = Yes UnattendSwitch = Yes OemPnPDriversPath = Drivers\010_Maxtor;Drivers\020_VIA\;Drivers\020_VIA\Inf\Winxp;Drivers\020_VIA\IDEWinXP;Drivers\020_VIA\WinXP;Drivers\020_VIA\Agp;Drivers\030_Lan_GigaBit;Drivers\040_Linksys_NIC;Drivers\050_ATI_9700_Pro;Drivers\060_Samtron_Monitor;Drivers\070_CS110_XP TargetPath = \WINDOWS FileSystem = LeaveAlone DriverSigningPolicy = Ignore Repartition = No DUDisable = Yes Hibernation = No [Shell] DefaultStartPanelOff = Yes DefaultThemesOff = Yes [GuiUnattended] AdminPassword = "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" EncryptedAdminPassword = NO OEMSkipRegional = 1 TimeZone = 020 OemSkipWelcome = 1 [UserData] ProductKey = "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" FullName = "xxxxxxxxxx" OrgName = "xxxxxxxxxx" ComputerName = xxxxxxxxxx [TapiLocation] CountryCode = 001 Dialing = Tone AreaCode = 972 [Identification] JoinWorkgroup = WORKGROUP [Networking] InstallDefaultComponents = Yes [Components] msnexplr = off msmsgs = off WMPOCM = off Zonegames = off [WindowsFirewall] Profiles = WindowsFirewall.TurnOffFirewall [Display] BitsPerPel = 32 Vrefresh = 75 XResolution = 1024 YResolution = 768 [WindowsFirewall.TurnOffFirewall] Mode = 0 [IEPopupBlocker] BlockPopups = No
  23. it is a bad burn try another CD-rw I have that problem all the time with the cheap CD-rw........ Something to do with the temperature .. I find temp changes on the Cheap CD cause read errors after the disc changes temp,,,,,,,,,,, When a disc messes up I use beyond compare to compare the burnt files and it shows read errors ,,,,,,, I know it is temp problem cause I can frezze the cd then burn them refreeze it then compare it .. refreeze it do the install no errors but try that all in one shot with (no freeze) with a hot cheap cd it fails.................. The plain files in the I386 folder.. not the extra folders ... Are the last ones burnt onto the hot CD....... near the end.... So you know the rest of the story..... I think spinning those high speed cheap disc around still hot are like disturbing a hot solder join it turns into cold joint like when you move the wire while the solder is cooling ...... Mac!
  24. I have ran into trouble with those cheap none data DVD and CD... When they change temp they no longer read data correctly......... If there are hot when you burn then they cool off the disc diameter changes... One solution is to put them in the freezer then do the burn with no compare ... refreeze them then do the compare......
