  1. No, but I can think of a more suitable place to fit it. If nothing else, with vLite, I enjoy the fact that root drive backups complete in twice the time and more than fit on a DVD5 should it be necessary to do so.
  2. It's been my experience that you absolutely need WHQL drivers to integrate in order for the drivers to properly install and be loaded once you boot to the desktop for the first time. I've had trouble integrating beta and non-WHQL drivers, but never with them. It makes no difference if you answer the unsigned driver prompt in the affirmative; they won't be installed when you boot.
  3. Darn....I'm sorry. I forgot something important. I should have written this out prior to posting, rather than just stream of conscious. After doing this, MS DTC Service may stop running; you will get this event, even after subsequent reboots: Event 4691: The run-time environment was unable to initialize for transactions required to support transactional components. Make sure that MS-DTC is running. (DtcGetTransactionManagerEx(): hr = 0x8004d027) and Event 4427: Failed to initialize the needed name objects. Error Specifics: hr = 0x80004005, d:\rtm\com\complus\dtc\dtc\msdtcprx\src\dtcinit.cpp:571, CmdLine: C:\Windows\system32\dllhost.exe /Processid:{02D4B3F1-FD88-11D1-960D-00805FC79235}, Pid: 3060 This is the way you get rid of these: At a command prompt, type the following command: %WINDIR%\System32\msdtc.exe -uninstall 5. Start Registry Editor, and then remove the following registry keys if they exist: • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CID • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSDTC • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\MSDTC • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\MSDTC • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MSDTC 6. At a command prompt, type %WINDIR%\System32\msdtc.exe -install. I guess it sounds complicated, but my event log is absolutely clean now - the only warning I'm getting now is the Kerberos thing. All audits are successful, and no application red or yellow blotches. I just went through the motions myself, and indeed just now when I rebooted, no more events.
  4. I've successfully got rid of this one: Event filter with query "SELECT * FROM __InstanceModificationEvent WITHIN 60 WHERE TargetInstance ISA "Win32_Processor" AND TargetInstance.LoadPercentage > 99" could not be reactivated in namespace "//./root/CIMV2" because of error 0x80041003. Events cannot be delivered through this filter until the problem is corrected. Boot into safe mode. First, open services and stop the Windows Management Instrumentation Service. Take ownership of the folder or the contents of the folder "C:\Windows\System32\wbem\Repository." I've done this three times now on different installs and didn't have any issues after doing this, but I suggest you back up the folder to be certain. Delete the contents of the folder. Reboot. When you boot into Vista, you might notice a half dozen or so application errors...it's OK. Reboot again, and Event ID 10 will be gone, along with the afore mentioned application errors. Good luck, I'm not responsible for you hosing your system, & all that.
  5. Alright then - try this. I used it to turn off the Shutdown Event Tracker on a release candidate of Server 2008....it worked perfectly. I would not advise trying any other features though; you may very well hose your registry. http://www.kood.org/win-2003-optimize-tool/
  6. So...are favicons totally wacked for you guys in this new browser? I'm only seeing a few out of a possible two hundred or so.
  7. I finally got it to install. I used the above configurations as a guide. I think the only thing I did differently on this one is left gadgets and toolbar, and left UAC on and enabled.
  8. It seems like you and the fellow before stripped out a good deal more than I did(!) Who can figure.
  9. If you are so inclined, why don't you and SnapShot post your Vlite config here to see if anything jumps out at me. Thanks....
  10. You're right - it didn't work. I'm sure Nuhi will figure it out eventually. Wow---I just tried a very minimal reduction, basically only throwing out drivers and languages. I kept UAC and had it enabled. Still a no-go. I wonder if this is an issue with SP1 (?!)
  11. I just extracted the installer and integrated the resulting Microsoft Update Standalone Package (.msu). It seems to have integrated successfully with Vlite - I'm going to try to install Vista now.
  12. It sounds like IE8 is quite promising, so I tried to install it today on my Vlite install. The install completes, but after a reboot, the install reverses and restores IE7. I just wondered if I was alone on this. ------------------------------ [Compatibility] ACDSee / XnView Zoom Player Aero Glass File and printer sharing (Server) Internet Explorer Recommended Scanners and Cameras System Restore [CustomHide] [Components] ;# Accessories # Accessibility Mobility Center Paint Speech Support System Information Welcome Center Windows Sidebar and Gadgets Wordpad ;# Drivers # Diva Server Ethernet network adapters Modems Printers-Apollo Printers-Brother Printers-Canon Printers-Citizen Printers-Dell Printers-Diconix Printers-Epson Printers-Fuji Xerox Printers-Fujitsu Printers-Generic printer Printers-Gestetner Printers-HP Printers-IBM Printers-Infotec Printers-Konica Printers-Konica Minolta Printers-Kyocera Mita Printers-Lanier Printers-Lexmark Printers-Minolta Printers-Minolta-QMS Printers-NEC Printers-NRG Printers-Oce Printers-Oki Printers-Olivetti Printers-Panasonic Printers-QMS Printers-Ricoh Printers-Samsung Printers-Savin Printers-Seikosha Printers-Sharp Printers-Sony Printers-Star Printers-Tally Printers-Tektronix Printers-Wipro ePeripherals Printers-Xerox QLogic Fibre Channel Adapter Scanners Sound controllers Storage controllers-Adaptec Storage controllers-Elxstor Storage controllers-Hewlett-Packard Storage controllers-IBM ServeRAID Storage controllers-ICP vortex Storage controllers-Intel Storage controllers-ITE Storage controllers-LSI Logic Storage controllers-MegaRAID Storage controllers-nVidia Storage controllers-Promise Storage controllers-SiS Storage controllers-ULi Storage controllers-Via ;# Games # Inbox Games Premium Inbox Games ;# Hardware Support # Fax Support Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Modem Support Smartcards Windows Mobile Device Center WLAN Support ;# Languages # Japanese Korean Simplified Chinese Table Driven Text Input Processor Traditional Chinese ;# Multimedia # Movie and DVD Maker Music and Video samples Sample Pictures Screensavers Shell event sounds SideShow Sound Recorder Wallpapers Windows Photo Viewer ;# Network # Connect to a Network Projector Internet Information Services (IIS) Windows Collaboration Windows Mail ;# Services # Error Reporting ReadyBoost Remote Registry Secondary Logon WebDAV (WebClient) Windows Remote Management Windows Search Windows Time ;# System # Help IMAPIv2 Burning Support Malicious Software Removal Tool Manual Install (Setup.exe) Microsoft Agent Natural Language Remote Differential Compression Run a legacy CPL elevated Security Center Sync Center Tablet PC User Account Control (UAC) Windows Defender Windows Easy Transfer [Options] DEP (Data Execution Prevention) = Default User Account Control (UAC) = Enabled AntiSpyware Realtime Protection = Default AutoPlay = Enabled Paging Executive = Enabled Power scheme = High performance Power button = Shutdown Sleep button = Do nothing Hibernation = Off Control Panel - Classic View = Enabled Show hidden files and folders = Yes Show protected operating system files = No Show extensions for known file types = No IE Phishing Filter = Disabled IE Phishing Verification Ballon Tips = Disabled [Protection] [Drivers] E:\Files\Drivers\MSI K8T Neo2-F v2.0\Gigabit Ethernet 5.673.0712.2007\Netrtlx.inf [unattended] [Hotfixes] [LanguagePacks]
  13. Does anyone know if there is some way to rectify this? Thank you.
  14. Can anyone tell me if the Zune software package requires IE to function properly? I'm the last guy on planet earth to switch to Firefox (I get it now!) and am wondering if I can safely remove IE for my next nLite build-up. Thank you
  15. I read today that Vista SP1 will not be Vlite friendly, as it will be packed as an executable and is not readily slipstreamed (see the article below) http://winbeta.org/comments.php?id=9573&catid=1 Nuhi - have you thought of any potential strategies to deal with the new service pack format? Thanks, CF
  16. Please forgive me if this seems too elementary and you're talking about something else, but today I integrated about fifty hotfixes and patches with Vlite. I can see the ALL of the updates I integrated by going to the control panel and clicking on Windows Update. Now, when the WU panel is open, in the lower left hand corner of the screen is a link called "Installed Updates." Click on this, and your integrated updates should be listed. BTW: I had one WU that would not install today...it was a junk e-maill filter update for Windows Mail. But since I got rid of Windows Mail with Vlite, I'm not surprised.
  17. Sorry, but VistaGlazz doesn't work with SP1. What I did was extract the files in question from my old RTM image which had already been patched with VistaGlazz [shsvcs.dll, uxtheme.dll, and themeui.dll) and place them in system 32 of my SP1 install. That involves taking ownership of the existing files and renaming them before moving the patched files. Even then, only one of my favorite visual styles worked...none of the others did. I can tell you that my initial impressions of SP1 being faster than RTM were faulty. It felt faster because it was a fresh install with no third party software, firewall and antivirus apps installed. After a day of playing around, SP1 seems slower and more unreliable than RTM...it simply isn't worth it. However, I do think it is well worthwhile to install the compatibility & reliability and performance patches on RTM...that does make for a better user experience. SP1 just simply isn't even close to ready.
  18. That did the trick. I had thought of doing that myself, but it somehow seemed too easy to actually work!
  19. Bless you my son! I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully used this patched uxtheme...I followed the directions to the letter and encountered no difficulties. I successfully renamed the files in question and placed the patched items in system32, then rebooted. It tells me the service isn't running when I attempt to apply a theme. As well, the default theme won't run either.
  20. I Vlited SP2 with 1.1 beta, but had no compatibility tab. Since it was essential for one particular app to work under SP1, I vlited with 1.0 final and voila! Compatiblity tab. Now if I can just find a patched uxtheme.dll. It's marginally faster all around, but even now, copy and move functions are still way slower than they should be...a progress bar should never be seen when copying a file < 5mb on a RAID 0 array. Yes, I know it's a prebeta. In fairness, it's better in many ways, but still much work to be done.
  21. Have you guys actually run into an instance when you've needed it? All of my old stuff that I thought needed XPSP2 compatiblity has installed and run fine without it.
  22. One thing I'll say about the class scheduler...I never experience audio dropouts anymore... Under XP, with Nvidia Soundstorm audio, I experienced frequent crackles or dropouts when copying and pasting large files & other resource intensive operations. Not the case with Vista. BTW: For those of you using Adobe Audition or CoolEdit, the 100% CPU utilization during recording is not DRM or anything like that....it's the scroller. Turn off Auto Scrolling, and CPU use is just about nil.
  23. Do you suppose it's because hardware accelerated audio is no longer an option?
