The SHA1 checksums for the integrated SP 1 ISO images downloaded from MSDN and/or Technet are floating around on the web. The nice thing is, they match the checksums that HashCalc generates for the ISO images I managed to get my hands on! dd_wizard

That's pretty aggressive. Removing things from Network can break Vista at install time. Remote Desktop and Assistance broke my x64 install, but I can't remember what the symptom was. Now I install it and turn it off after the first boot. Winamp and Exact Audio Copy both refuse to work with Firefox, and you can't download standalone updates from MS with anything but IE, so I always install IE. Important updates are going to come down for a lot of the items you removed. Security updates are a big deal and a lot of things like Windows Firewall will get updates. My philosophy is to leave in anything that's small and I can turn off. Then I don't get a bunch of broken updates. Even though MS help says you can't turn the search indexer off, you can! And it's small, so why not install it? I blow away Media Center (it's huge and the N version of Vista doesn't include it, so MS should be able to cope with me not installing it), languages, drivers, tablet PC... things that suck up a lot of disc space and are unused, and not likely to be part of a security update I WANT on my system. Install but turn off Remote Registry, Windows Remote Management, etc. They're small, and you get to practice using Administrative Tools. That preset will probably give you problems. If you like, I can post mine. It produces a 5GB x86 SP 1 install and a 6.3GB x64 SP 1 install without any new error or warning events showing up in Computer Manager. Those sizes include a 2.3GB paging file, so the OS sizes are 2.7GB and 4GB respectively. So far, no problems from WU either. EDIT: I remember what removing Remote Desktop and Assistance broke. I started getting the Terminal Services error event in Computer Manager > Event Viewer. It happens in x86 and x64, I believe. dd_wizard

Here's the System section from my C:\Windows\Setup\Last Session.ini for my last x64 install of integrated SP 1: ;# System # Manual Install (Setup.exe) Natural Language Tablet PC I turned several things off in "Windows Features On/Off" after the install. This was a live install of x64, not a virtual run. In the morning, I'm making an identical x86 to install on my other bootable partition. I'll post the results then. EDIT: BTW, large files transfer rates are about 20% faster to/from my USB backup drive on SP 1. Anybody else seeing that large an increase? This is on x86 and x64. Oh! Where is Windows Easy Transfer? I didn't see it on X64 SP 1. I'll check x86 SP 1 in the morning, but I don't think I've seen it there either. dd_wizard

This is the key that would be used if you reinstalled from your recovery disc(s), the one on the bottom is kind of painful to use as described above. Thanks Nuhi. I was hoping it would be something simple, but that's hardly ever the case. It's an awesome program as it is! EDIT: I just built the x64 vLite iso, and including the modem drivers only added 22.9MB. So it's not a huge bloat just to include the modem drivers. dd_wizard

Is there any chance that other drivers besides printers and disc drives could be broken out by vendor? The ONLY place I've been able to find a signed, 64 bit, hardware compatible modem driver for my laptop is in the MS x64 drivers that come with the original Vista disc. I've searched all over, but Toshiba elected to use an Agere modem chip set on the Realtek HDA audio bus. The only hardware compatible drivers are from Toshiba, and they never bothered to make a 64 bit version of the driver available. They have an updated 32 bit driver, so I'm able to use it and vLite out the MS modem drivers on a 32 bit install. This might be useful for other odd hardware configurations, especially for 64 bit Vista. I'm sure other hardware IDs are unique to a particular brand/model. Thanks, dd_wizard

My Toshiba laptop came with a TWO DVD recovery disc set for Vista Home Premium only. That gives you an idea of how much bloatware was included! lol It also came with the Windows Upgrade Anytime DVD from MS. I did a web search on "clean install vista over OEM" or something like that and found a great guide for doing this. A very small Activation Backup/Restore app can be downloaded that the guide recommends. This allows you to reactivate your clean install with your OEM product ID. I think this is completely legal, as long as you install exactly the same version you got with the laptop. MS has validated my install a few times, and I know my product ID is the same OEM ID as it was for the 20 GB OEM install. Vlite came in around 5.5GB OS + 2GB hibernation file, but I didn't get very carried away when I vLited it. dd_wizard

It works fine for me with a vLited install of the OEM SP 1 disc. WMIdiags says there are some dependencies I missed for Parental Controls, however. No kids here, but my next install will have Parental Controls again. dd_wizard

When a driver folder contains multiple .inf files, vLite v1.1.1 grabs the first one even if you manually select a different one. The only way to integrate the correct driver is to delete gtipci21.inf or change it's file extension. I have two driver folders with multiple inf files where the correct file is not the first inf file, and it's happening for both of them. Think this is a bug? dd_wizard

HttpEvent generates event ID 15016, "Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. The data field contains the error number." This event is generated for vLite installs from the 6001.18000.080118-1840_x86fre_Client_en-us-FRMCFRE_EN_DVD.iso disc, full installs of the same disc and SP 1 updates from the stand-alone .exe file. I'm curious if it happens with the WU bits. I've tried all the above methods except for WU, and I get one event per boot on all the systems. The on-line help makes me believe it can be ignored. One technet thread suggests disabling the http service in the registry, but that breaks the printspooler. Guess we live with it for now with SP 1. WMI Event ID 10 does NOT occur for updates from the stand-alone .exe file. However, it occurs for a full or vLite install from the 6001.18000.080118-1840_x86fre_Client_en-us-FRMCFRE_EN_DVD.iso disc. So it's not related to vLite. It's related to event filtering, but I'm not sure how to resolve it yet. Any ideas would be appreciated. Again, I get one error event per boot on full or vLite installs. dd_wizard

Which version of vLite is more likely to work with 6001.18000.080118-1840_x86fre_Client_en-us-FRMCFRE_EN_DVD.iso? I'm going to try it soon, so it would be nice to know which version has the best chance of success. Thanks, dd_wizard
