Good Firewall for vista
spacesurfer replied to tal ormanda's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
I can't seem to figure out how to use Jetico. Once installed, I couldn't browse the internet. I tried so many options to let IE explore by adding IE. I even opened everything for internet and still no go. Jetico is too complicated to configure for me. I had to go back to Comodo. Their help file didn't help either. -
I believe Vista ignores whether partitions are hidden or not. I'm not sure about XP but since you mentioned it worked with XP/2000, XP may not ignore hidden partitions. Therefore, you may want to install Vista first to an active partition. Then use a third-party program to hide Vista partition and make the XP partition active. Then install XP. You might have to repair Vista boot up since XP will overwrite the MBR. The only way you can boot the two OS's without using Vista's menu is to use Grub as explained in the Dual Booting Vista/XP with Grub here. This method still relies on the boot manager (which is grub) to be on the active partition. Even if you use a third-party boot manager, it still installs to the active partition or creates its own partition. In this case, if you lose the boot manager partition, then you can't boot either OS.

Good Firewall for vista
spacesurfer replied to tal ormanda's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
I can't remember where I saw this but on some site reviewing firewalls, it mentioned you can actually install it in compatibility mode and it will work. I use COMODO Firewall and Antivirus on XP ever since I heard of it but haven't tried it on Vista yet. I'll be testing it soon. Both are free. One thing to think about is will Comodo firewall (XP version) disable Windows Firewall? That might be an issue because of the changes in Vista. -
Why was it a mistake? It's the best office version in my opinion. Then again, people have different tastes.

Real or not real? That's an easy question. Yes, it's real. Both 2003 and 2007 have been made portable. Actually, it's called virtualized. Legal or not legal? That's a tough one. Software called Thinstall Virtualization Suite is used to create virtual registries to make software portable. Many applications have been made portable with this software. Now, if you make your own Office with Thinstall, I suppose it's legal. Search for Thinstall and they have a demo video of portable office 2003 on their website. I don't know how MS likes that idea or not but Thinstall is certainly touting it.

Vista QFE slipstreaming
spacesurfer replied to sprack's topic in Unattended Windows Vista/Server 2008
Not complicated at all. @FireGeier Do you have to install all the updates everytime you want to update or just the remaining ones? For example, if last month I installed 6 and this month MS came out with 6 more updates, do I install just the 6 additional ones or all 12. Basically, do I created an XML file with all 12 or just the 6 new ones? -
so if i remove coverdesigner and wave editor lines from the code box above, those components will not install, is that correct? also, the burnrights components, what is that for? is that for non-admins to be able to burn? if all the users on my pc are admins, is that component necessary? the text in the code box, is that included in your download or do i have to save the text as a file?

I had issued like that before. Turned out to be bad memory - it was from Kingston. Replaced it some other generic and it worked fine henceforth.

I doubt you'll get answers to any questions regarding dynamic customization of the ribbon as it requires extensive programming... it's just not a simple thing to do. It requires programming in C#. As far as I know, I've created a static customized ribbon for Word with VBA but VBA is limited in what it can do. Anyway, good luck in doing this. Search the MS website.

easiest way is to use the conditional sum wizard in excel. it will walk you through it. it's found in tools --> conditional sum... If you don't see it, you'll have to install add-ins. Go to tools, add-ins, then check conditional sum wizard. or you can do it manually as mentioned in post 2. the wizard is helpful for complex conditions.

Prathmpl has success installing hold 'em poker from the CAB file using the following syntax I showed him that uses package manager: start /w pkgmgr /ip /m:path_to_cab\dreamscene.cab /s:c:\sandbox The example uses dreamscene.cab but you can probably substitute that with any cab. The /ip switch, I believe, does an online installation of a package.

Constant Network Activity on Tray Icon with Wireless
spacesurfer replied to spacesurfer's topic in Networks and the Internet
I don't have antivirus installed but I do have a firewall (COMODO firewall). But here's the thing - when I connect to another access point at work, this doesn't happen. Only at home does this happen. I think it has to do with my Airlink router. It must be constantly sending some signals or something. -
I do believe you cannot get the system to ask for a password everytime you access the folder. Reason is, once you enter the password, it saves the password for that period you are logged in. Once you log out, then it will ask for the password again. Only way to get it to ask for the password is to log out.

Home Network with one XP & one Vista PC
spacesurfer replied to lesg's topic in Networks and the Internet
I do believe Windows Firewall is not an issue since I am networking Vista and XP without a problem. I'm not using Public folders however. I set certain folders as shared folders in Vista and XP. What version of Vista are you using? It may be an issue like XP Home version where XP home didn't support advanced file sharing. Home had simple file sharing while professional has advanced file sharing. It also odd that another use in this forum described the opposite problem - he couldn't access XP files from his laptop, which has vista. -
If you did save your settings, it's possible you are connecting to your neighbors. Check to make sure you are connecting to yours by checking the SSID. Sometimes, people don't change their SSID and keep the default because they don't understand security. I changed my SSID so I can identify that I'm connected to mine. I also don't broadcast mine so others can't see it (unless they have hacking tools). You may not be concerned about security right now, but when others use your bandwidth, you might be concerned. Then if you start sharing your files, then you might be concerned about security. Just something to think about for future.
-
Which folders are you trying to share? Are you sharing folders within your "Documents and Settings" folder - such as your "My Documents" folder? Remember that there are two layers of security when accessing folders from a network. The first is the Permissions in the "Sharing" tab. You need to add yourself if not already done and give full control. Then of course the "Security" tab. Add yourself there as well. As cluberti mentioned, your username/password must match. I have noticed, however, that if they don't, it does ask me for username/password.

Constant Network Activity on Tray Icon with Wireless
spacesurfer replied to spacesurfer's topic in Networks and the Internet
Okay, I downloaded it and ran it. I'm not sure what to look for though. What am I looking for? When my network is idle, I've got the following that says they are LISTENING: alg.exe:2280 svchost.exe - many of them but only one that says listening. system:4 - many of them but only one that says listening. Is svchost and system normal? And what the heck is alg.exe? -
I like the breadcrumbs feature that makes it easy to navigate from folder to folder. I like that you can add your own places to the side panel. I miss the status bar of XP, which exists in Vista but it doesn't show the total size of the folder you are view. You now have to select all the files to view the size of all the files. Explorer is also buggy in the way it handles the views. I can't seem to get the views to stick no matter what I try.
-
I'm having the same problem. None of the "tricks" to make the view stick work -- like holding ctrl or alt or shift (any combination) while closing. For some reason, my E: partition is set to view by groups just like the "My Computer" (now just Computer). If I change it, then the change is reflected in "Computer". This is SOOOO annoying. Nothing will rest this behaviour.

Constant Network Activity on Tray Icon with Wireless
spacesurfer replied to spacesurfer's topic in Networks and the Internet
No, are those freeware? I will search for them. -
This happens to me on WinXP but I have an old Dell Latitude Laptop. I think my battery isn't as young as it used to be. It goes from 100% to < 10% in less than 30 mins sometimes. I have to keep it plugged in at all times. I don't think it's winxp, it's just an old battery that I have.

I've got annoying activity that's bugging me and I was wondering if you guys know why its happening. I've got an Airlink-101 Super G router that I just installed. I set up a manual SSID, WEP 64bit encryption, not broadcasting. On my laptop, the tray icon that tells me wireless is connected is persistently lit up telling me it's doing something, downloading something or transferring some information even when I'm not doing anything. I mean it doesn't turn off for even a millisecond. When I have connect to other network access points, it doesn't do that. Only on this new router that I got. I have accidently connected to neighbors (because I wasn't broadcasting mine) and it didn't do this. Should I be worried? Why is it doing that? Is it taking up my bandwidth? I did notice that my download speed is lower on the laptop compared to my desktop even though speed shouldn't matter since it connects at 54 Mbps and internet speed is only 3 Mbps. If anyone can please shed light, let me know. If you need more info, let me know. thanks.

Batch File for Integrating Vista Updates
spacesurfer replied to Mercury_22's topic in Unattended Windows Vista/Server 2008
You seem pretty adamant about your method. I won't argue. Just trying to caution users on this forum that they need to look at both methods and decide which they should follow. Again, just like FireGeier said, can you back up your claim from WAIK? He backed up his claim by posting snippets from WAIK. I'm curious to see where you saw you can use PEIMG for VISTA INSTALL.WIM, not just for the WINPE image. (The name PEIMG is a clue that it's for WINPE.) Lot's of people are using this methods it seems but doesn't mean it's the right method. Again, let's calm down. We're not saying PEIMG doesn't work. We are just not sure if it really worked like it seems to have worked because it's not backed by MS official documentation that I've seen thus far. ** Also, simple does not always mean correct. **
