  1. Now let me POKE a question: Of the total posts, how many posts do not contain a valid word? In other words, how many posts are legitimate (with words) and how many not legitimate (thrown out b/c of duplicates, etc.)?
  2. Open my computer. Then click on tools from menu. click on folder options. click on file types. find bmp. you'll see the open with program there. you can change it to the program you like by clicking on advanced. When you do so, you'll see open listed as one of the actions. click on it then click on edit. then type the path your program you want to use to open it. for example, if it's paintbrush, you would type "C:\WINDOWS\system32\mspaint.exe" "%1". For bmp, the edit command opens the bitmap with mspaint.exe. hence if you edit the edit action, you'll see that typed in. My default action for the open command for bmp is rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1
  3. he wrote folders, drives, etc. in the second sentence. i answered his questions based on how i interpreted his question.
  4. I may be wrong but changing the file type icon is a simple registry change. Since you cannot write-protect that key, you probably cannot prevent a program from changing the file type icon. You probably could run a registry command that modifies that registry key back at every startup.
  5. The "open" command simply opens the file/folder that is clicked using the default program set in the registry. For example, it is a pdf document and you have Acrobat Reader installed, then clicking on open (or double clicking) will open that file using Acrobat Reader. In the registry, it will look something like this: "c:\program files\adobe\reader\acroread.exe" "%1" where acroread.exe is the executable that opens acrobat and %1 is the variable for the file you double-clicked. Anyway, if you go to folder options, then look for the extension of the file, for example, doc, then click on advanced, you will see all the commands in the right-click menu and the commands that are run when clicking on them. So, doc will have open, print, edit, etc. Click on open, then click on edit and you'll see the command that is run to open the doc file. Or you can go to the registry but I'm not going to explain that here.
  6. google's gmail works. read the instructions on gmail help page. follow the same direction provided for outlook express. windows mail is simply outlook express for vista. also, i would rather use windows live mail (it's in beta) but faster. and it works with hotmail (now windows live mail) and also with google. However, with windows live mail, you don't have to mess with setting up your google mail. it will set it up for you. here it is: Windows Live Mail Beta
  7. try updating your graphics driver.
  8. I went ahead a bought a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L and E6550 C2D processor with Corsair memory 2 Gb. Total $330. I'll get back $25 in rebates. Anyway, I'm planning on using my old ATX case which has a 400 W power supply. Does this seem good enough?
  9. Delayed write is used by fixed drives (not recommended by external drives). It basically is a way your computer thinks it's finished writing to the drive but it actually writes long after your copying/moving dialog disappears. It's used for fixed drives since you won't be unplugging them. For USB drives, you want that setting turned off since you are going to unplug them (intentionally or accidentally). So, even after your copying/moving dialog disappears, there will be activity that it is still writing. If you unplug in, then it will not have finished and you get a delayed write failed error. Check your right-click properties of the drive and read through to help you choose the setting right for the type of drive. (Also, even your fixed drives can cause a delayed-write failed when your drive is starting to fail. I was having a problem with one and eventually it drive making the clicking noise - basically the head wouldn't move to read the drive. So, it could be a sign of a failing drive.) I would copy all the data to another drive, format, and copy it back to see if this ever happens again. It could be something wrong with a corrupt MFT.
  10. Just copy your normal.dot to your USB. Then on your other computer, copy the existing one with the one from your USB. All the toolbar and macros are saved in normal.dot for microsoft word. i'm unsure about powerpoint and excel.
  11. I'm not sure if you really understand what a macro is since you didn't mention in your question what your macro text is. If you do know what a macro is, I apologize. Here are two ways of accomplishing these, but both are problematic because of this reason: * Reason you will not be able to do this automatically is because when you open a document from your document template containing the FileName Path in your footer, you haven't saved the file yet. So Word does not know the filepath since your document isn't saved. Here are two ways and the work-around for the problem mentioned above: First Method 1. Open a blank document (.doc), not a document template (.dot). 2. In the footer, go ahead and put your filepath field. 3. Save your document as a document template (other than normal.dot), like filepath.dot. 4. Close word 5. Rename filepath.dot to normal.dot and replace your existing normal.dot with this one. 6. Now open word (not by double clicking your document template) normally and you should automatically see your field. You will not see a path because file hasn't been saved yet. Save the document to any name you like and anywhere you like. 7. Close word and reopen the document. You still will not see the complete file path. Double-click on the footer. Hit the F9 key and voila, Word will update your filepath field with your current file path. So, basically, you'll have to use the F9 key to update your field each time you save a file. But you'll have to do this only once. Second Method Other method is to record a macro. Just record a macro to insert the filepath field to your footer. You can assign the macro to the toolbar so you can add the filepath on one click. However, before running the macro, I would save the file first so you avoid F9 key to update the field. Otherwise, if it hasn't been save and you run the macro, then you'll have to go into the footer and press F9.
  12. You didn't mention what kind of printer you are using, what size your page is, size of page you are using, margin settings, etc.
  13. Try this solution. Get your settings the way you want on another computer if available. Then, close Word. Then go to "%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates" and find your normal.dot. Copy that and make it read-only. Replace your Vista normal.dot with this one. Make sure word is closed when doing so. Now see if this solves your problem. (Note that in Vista, your normal.dot will not be in the same folder as in XP since the folder structure has changed in Vista. I've never actually tried 2003 in Vista so I'm not sure when you would find normal.dot but I'm assuming you are clever enough to look for it.)
  14. Is this what you are talking about? A line on left for page 1 and line on right for page 2? and so on.
  15. I hate Vista. After using it for so many months of getting it to dual boot and learning the OS and the way it works in terms of installing etc, I've learned I'm more productive on XP. I'm dual booting the two but I don't even bother booting Vista anymore. It's just taking up space on one of my partition. Sorry, I know it doesn't answer your question, but I think you should stick with XP unless Vista comes preloaded on a laptop/desktop you are buying.
  16. Is hyperthreading worth looking at? Is that for gaming?
  17. LIMP Wait a minute. That's 23 words in one POST but not in ONE sentence. Your stat as stated originally was how many in one sentence, not in a post (if I remember correctly), wasn't it?
  18. I need another LOAN to pay off my first LOAN.
  19. What did you say? I must be DEAF. Keep up the good work with the stats IcemanND. I like your summary statistics.
  20. puntoMX, I almost passed this up. I now see the Gigabyte p35 board was an invaluable advice for one reason: ASUS boards of the P35 chipset tend to overheat according to Extremetech.com compared to Gigabyte. I think it's wiser to run a cooler system for longevity. I'm torn with options though. I could spend $60 more and get P35-DS3P for $160, which has firewire and eSATA (which I really want) and sacrifice on processing speed for lower price to keep my budget. Or, go with the one you mentioned (the $99 P35-DS3:) and get a faster processor. I can add a PCI firewire card later. Hmmm?
  21. Yeah, I thought the 6550 was much cheaper than that as well and now the price is higher. I was going to post that one until they fooled me. Anyway, based on DL and Nitroshift, I think I'm now considering a P35 chipset board. I looked at the Gigabyte and it doesn't have an eSATA port on back. I think I will be making use of eSATA enough to pass Gigabyte. I couldn't find a gigabyte board with one for the price range I checked. I'm particularly looking at the P5K and the P5KC. The difference seems to be P5KC supports DDR3. I'm not sure if I'll upgrade to DDR3 in future so I'm may go with P5K. It's $134 right now.
  22. Let me research for about the Gigabyte board. I haven't had any boards other than ASUS and they've worked for me. That's why I'm fond of them. One of my requirements for the board is a eSATA, firewire on the back panel. I'm sure most boards today have DDR2 support, SATA, giga lan, PCIe, USB 2.0, etc so I don't need to mention these.
  23. Thanks for link PuntoMX. DL said it's the same price but it's actually $25 more. (Every penny counts, of course.) On the other hand, how about this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115031. It's not as fast but I don't need blazing speed. It's a Conroe rather than Allendale. What is the difference between Conroe and Allendale?
  24. JUNE
  25. I'm not a gamer and I don't need advanced graphics. What is SLI? Do I need it if I don't game? DL, can you give me a link to E6750 that is the same price as the one I was looking at, please? Thanks. Nitroshift, you say P35 is buggy but yours is stable? Can you give me some links to the buggy claims. I would like to read for myself. Thanks.
