  1. @kang roy In case you haven't noticed, the issue wajed had was solved, he recovered the files he needed and he needs not to perform additional recovery. Anyway I cannot understand anything of your post. If you need help in something, please start a new thread. Try to write short and simple sentences, I really don't understand if what you posted is a question, a suggestion or what . jaclaz
  2. This time OT, but not that much : http://simonowen.com/fdrawcmd/ http://simonowen.com/samdisk/ jaclaz
  3. Well, then try one of the other suggestions.... Personally I like the shsufdrv driver approach, as it is "specular" with using VDK or IMDISK or VSS. You can get the files from here: http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/pc/dos/freedos/file.../disk/shsufdrv/ or here: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/.../disk/shsufdrv/ There is this one: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA013937/ed...sk/index_e.html but I seem to remember it is GUI only I'll see if I can find anything else with a non-driver approach. jaclaz

    FDV fileset for XP

Not a "full" list AFAIK, but I guess such a list can be "derived" from comparing a "very basic" winbuilder project (with cmd.exe as shell) with a corresponding project (with "full" explorer as shell), or probably more easily just from the "Explorer .script for LiveXP". Here: http://livexp.boot-land.net/ http://livexp.boot-land.net/LiveXP/Basic/S...Explorer.Script Threads by the Author Ove for the "history" and "bugs solved/features added" (older last): http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=2270 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=993 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=270 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=185 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=157 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=137 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=125 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=81 http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=33 and "official" history: http://ove.boot-land.net/explorer.html Most probably you want to look into "earlier" versions that provided "basic" functionalities. jaclaz P.S.: also NOT what you are asking for, but maybe something to keep an eye on : http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...c=23618&hl=
  5. No, you can use Qemu, quickly start a VM and save the files, but to do this you need to map the \\.\PhysicalDrive where the source files are, that I seem to remember is only possible under NT based systems, so you are back to square #1. There is a possible workaround (rather complex I guess). You use mkisofs to create a temporary .iso with the source (and a minimal bootable DOS). You create an image with qemu-img. You format the image from within Qemu and copy to it all the needed files/create the structure. But the whole point (as I see it) is that you are using from start an overly complex approach. You are now using a superfloppy image inside a .iso, that creates a RAMDISK to which you actually expand the compressed contents of the .img. You can have the same result with an easier approach: simply create a bootable .iso with grub4dos and map a "normal" floppy image as A:\ leaving the rest of the files on the CD that is accessed through SHSUCDX. With a "normal" floppy you can use BFI (I think it does run on 9x/Me too ): http://www.nu2.nu/bfi/ or use a "companion" of SHSUCDX: http://www.reocities.com/jadoxa/shsufdrv/index.html To create the "base" filesystem for the superfloppy, you can try these tools (old - page nt existing anymore ): http://web.archive.org/web/20061104075346/...er.org/mkdosfs/ Or you can experiment with these: http://www.frontiernet.net/~fys/mtools.htm the newish thingies by Alex Frounze seem "like it", but haven't tested 'em yet. I'll see if I can remember some other tools from ye ol'good times..... jaclaz P.S.: last time I used it, EXTRACT used to EXTRACT files, not add them.... Edit : You are right!
  6. Well, no, at least for Qemu. It depends on versions and settings. I briefly tested it with Qemu Manager 6 and it seemed like working mostly fine (with some issue depending on the chosen video card). Unfortunately the Qemu Manager site is down right now. http://qemu-forum.ipi.fi/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5075 Qemu Manager V. 6 should be available here: http://www.freewaregeeks.com/?page=detail&...amp;category=66 Qemu 0.11.1 has an unofficial supprt thread for Win98: http://qemu-forum.ipi.fi/viewtopic.php?f=5...374&p=15756 Binary here: http://qemu-forum.ipi.fi/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=5354 jaclaz
  7. Just for the record, for a number of reasons, not yet completelyt clear, in some cases VDK can "hang": http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=9195 Start with a freshly booted system. jaclaz
  8. There are, at the moment of this writing 121 pages in this thread, it is not at all easy to find the "good" info distinguishing it from requests of help and unuseful info. Here two examples: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...807&st=2152 http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...807&st=2100 Basically a common error people tend to do is putting a very thick "insulator" AND NOT loosen enough the screws around it. This can slightly bend either the contact or the PCB, and you need to re-tighten the screws very hard to have contact, or check the contacts/PCD and/or leave them un-screwed long enough for the bent things to recover their original state. jaclaz
  9. Disk alignment is not a big problem. Simply you change the number of hidden sectors to a multiple of 4 Kb. By default XP uses 63 hidden sectors, thus the disk is "misaligned", as 63x512=32,256/4,096=7.875 By default Vista and I think 7 also, use a much bigger number of hidden sectors, usually around 1 Mbyte, if I recall correctly. Compare with these: http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?sho...c=21186&hl= http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=88270 BUT be VERY aware of this issue: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...ic=9897&hl= not yet fully cleared/solved, if you are planning to use XP partitioning tools on that disk. jaclaz
  10. Yes and No. It should be possible to by-pass it: http://hardmaster.info/eng/articles/09-04-2009.html but it's well beyond the DIY level. Of course NOT, the CA-42 is (the good ones actually working) nothing different from a USB-to-TTL converter. It is possible, though, that the contacts are not good: http://forum.hddguru.com/1tb-seagate-hdd-d...d81-t12290.html It can happen that the pins are forced a bit too much by the card, check previous pages there are a few reports about this issue. Completely removing the PCB, thoroughly cleaning the contacts, check if any contact is twisted, etc., etc. may solve the problem, as well as re-tightening the screw nearest to the contacts once you remove the card. jaclaz
  11. What do Seagate utilities report (EXACTly)? http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/self...&NewLang=en Though I don't think it is/will be a DIY job: http://www.acelaboratory.com/scsi.examples.php http://www.google.com/url?q=http://forum.h...lba-t12535.html Or at least definitely NOT a cheap one. In other words, unless you have valuable data on it it is NOT worth the cost of a repair. You can try the demo: http://en.hydata.com/program-ID=11.html just for the fun of it. jaclaz

  13. My 7-zip (4.65 x64) is unable to open the .IMG file. I get an error "Can't open XP_INST.IMA as archiv." Did we find a x64 bug of 7-zip? Ok that's the wrong board for this type of error Well, I am running (32 bit) 9.07 beta, current is 9.10 beta, I guess it's time for you to ubgrade. jaclaz
  14. You are welcome. jaclaz
  15. Happy to see that the problem is solved, though I would like to understand WHAT are the differences between the "nlite integration" and the "plain integration" that do "trigger" a malfunctioning with latest version but does not with 0.2.3 . JFYI, Try open the .ima inside XP_INST_v04.7z (XP_INST.IMA) with 7-zip.... jaclaz

  17. Check this: http://www.withinwindows.com/2009/11/01/us...th-custom-isos/ cannot say if it applies to your case. jaclaz
  18. Well, just in case: MBRBATCH http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=3191 CHS<->LBA spreadsheets: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=2959 (no VBA used as to make them "work" on "any" spreadsheet app) jaclaz
  19. Well, "a SCSI hardrive" is a bit generic. A symmetrically generic answer is "maybe". Post model, make, original size, SCSI type, and what tells you it is a 0 byte (like an internal SCSI bus, an addon card, whatever. Please keep in mind that with SCSI drives out of 100 cases, 98 99 are solved by checking the connections, a bad SCSI cable or a mis-terminated bus is a very, very common issue. jaclaz
  20. THe HP Format tool: partitions the stick in one single partition (often with "unbalanced" CHS/LBA) makes the partition have EITHER a bootsector for MS-DOS (invoking IO.SYS) or for NT/2K/XP/2003 (invoking NTLDR) Since FreeDOS kernel file is kernel.sys it won't work. Additionally, Freedos usually have problems with CHS mappings as the geometry of the device is sometimes detected wrongly (or however it is "pickier" than other OSs). Solutions: use grub4dos or syslinux as "main" bootlaoaders or, easier: use RMPREPUSB: http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=7739 that allows for having a bootsector invoking kernel.sys and partitions/formats sticks "correctly". This will provide you a bootable USB stick with FreeDOS. Converting the install .iso in a way that works from a USB stick may be tricky, as it is very possible that several modificatins to the batches that run th einstall are needed. A known to be working way is to use grub4dos mapping of the .iso to (0xff), this way the Freedos will "see" the .iso as if it were a CD. Read the stickies here (yes, ALL of them): http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?showforum=66 Paricularly this one : http://www.boot-land.net/forums/index.php?...c=5041&st=4 So, given that newest RMPREPUSB allows for grub4dos booting too, you should use RMPREPUSB+grub4dos. jaclaz
  21. Yep. Yes and No. Those are settings that could be allright for your present purpose, but that are by no means the "right" ones for a more "complete" grldr CD (like various NT based OS, PE's, etc. A "better" example is in the given link. Yes. Yes. No, meaning that you can, but the results are unpredictable, meaning that I do not trust any .iso editing app, when it comes to bootable .iso. Hmmm, the idea was using the iso and the VM, you remember (of course CDRW are OK as well ) jaclaz
  22. Yes, that's a way, though I am pretty sure there should be Linux GUI tools for this - not really my field. (the Linux, not the MBR). An alternative is to access the Registry offline and delete the contents of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices (or edit each \DosDevice entry with the new signature), but your mileage may vary with this. (it won't be anymore an image, but a "moved" system, IF it works) jaclaz
  23. This was the reason for choosing the 7za.exe, I will try unRAR.exe Why not EXTRACT.EXE? jaclaz
  24. Yep, but are you from Poland? Why don't you ask on the Forum where you found the reference? In that thread appears to be a link to this: http://odsiebie.com/pokaz/1666414---0f02.html which is dead. Besides the OP says: I believe that only a small subset of WPI addons can run at T13, but anyway, I'll shut up now and let the people really experienced with WPI reply to your questions. jaclaz
  25. Do you save/restore the MBR (or at least the disk signature in it?). If not, it is very possible that this is the origin of the error on SAME hardware. jaclaz
