Unfortunately I have NO good news. That stick has seemingly and *somehow* got into what we highly specialized technicians call "bricked" status. The terms has been initially adopted for the Seagate 7200.11: but it applies to other devices as well. The issue is that is seen as 0 bytes. There is not any *known* method to exit this state without losing the data (and not necessarily it is possible to exit this state). It is *likely* (but not guaranteed) that data can still be recovered by doing either a "chip-off" reading or a transplant on another controller, but these procedures need tools and knowledge well outside the DIY field. If the scope is to recover the flash stick, you can try - if you are able to find the appropriate "Manufacturer Tool" to "reset" or "zap" (other highly specialized term) the stick, but in the procedure data will be lost in 99% of cases. Additionally something "very wrong" must have happened during previous attempts, as I can see in the sector (it seems like the .img is 100 times the same sector) the string "TestDisk" which I don't think it is a concidence (and I have never seen TESTDISK write that without user intervention). It looks like it was attempted to write TESTDISK bootsector but *somehow* the location was shifted 384 bytes In any case, and this is "aligned" with the "never ending" dsfo result, it seems like the reading goes in "loops" and the first sector only is read over and over. It is possible (but improbable) that using another tool you can actually get a proper image (or however not an endless repetition of first sector), but since PHOTOREC wasn't able to find anything, I really doubt it. Since it costs nothing, you can try datarescuedd. http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/v3/drdd.htm jaclaz

Yep, and when making three wheeled cars there are - as always - two ways to do them, the "wrong" way (as the one depicted in the picture you posted): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-wheeler#Two_rear and the "right" way: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-wheeler#Two_front See, as an example, some recent ones: http://www.diseno-art.com/news_content/2012/06/top-10-three-wheeled-vehicles/ (the "carver" being the only exception - gone to bankruptcy - that confirms the rule) Now, think a bit about which design would Mrs. Larson-Green would choose (and Mr. Ballmer would say that is the one preferred by users) jaclaz

Cannot say about battery life but anything between 900 and 1,000 bucks can get me TWO more than decent laptops, possibly THREE of them .... http://www.pcworld.com/article/2017398/microsoft-surface-with-windows-8-pro-pricing-899-and-up.html so I doubt that many "businesses" will choose to spend more to have a "compatible tablet". jaclaz

Not really, it's more like an editor blaming the printing company for not delivering the copies so that it cannot sell them (but wait , if the issue is with the printing company not able to deliver enough copies on time, it means that there is demand for the book... ). More loosely, in a business if you have an "internal projection" saying that you are going to sell (say) 1,000,000 pieces in first three months you should make d@mn sure - in theory - and after having verified the reliability of the projection - to have 1,000,000 pieces ( + or - 50,000 pieces or whatever is the confidence interval of the projection) ready over that period. OR (an alternative) the projections are completely wrong. In both cases, *someone* has f***ed up BIG *somewhere*. The bull**it about the ongoing world crisis is exactly that, it is not like you had plans to launch your brand new product on in late October 1929 and suddenly .... jaclaz

Oww, comeon guys, take it easy . It's only some fun, I called it a "small project" not because it is "easy" (if it was I would have already created the animated scene in .gif, in 17 different versions by myself), I called it "small" because it is nothing "vital", or "important" or "*needed*", it's just fun that hopefully we are having together . My view on point #2 is: the "sarcatic, naughty, snappy, provoking, catty etc." already happened BEFORE, in #1 (and as said I know how to make that quite well). Practical examples : #1: @bphlpt #2 @bhplt You might appreciate how in example #1 I have to duck when bhplt throws the brick, while in #2 I have to be really quick and dodge also the brick larryb123456 is likely to throw at me, the English proverb is "To get two birds with one stone" if I remember right ..... And now, an animated .gif where a character enters from the right and hugs the one on the left: We are friends , remember? jaclaz

Need help with data recovery on HDD
jaclaz replied to mattiasnyc's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Well, what testdisk may have found is a partition image formatted as FAT, the disk, should have been partitioned (how?, most probably in one big partition ) and that partition formatted as NTFS. It is like the FOURTH time that I am asking you to copy first 100 sectors and post them , I won't ask for them a fifth one . For the record, I asked for them: in post #21 on 22 August 2012 in post #35 on 02 November 2012 in post #39 on 05 November 2012 Maybe it's time you just do it. jaclaz -
Well, with all due respect , you should NOT post - and expecially in response to someone evidently not famiiar with the command line or batches - an untested script with such a potential destructive power. You do understand that if the user would have run that crappy batch in System directory or in Root he would likely have made the system unbootable/unrecoverable, do you? jaclaz

Capped (clipped, whatever) sound with Audigy sound card
jaclaz replied to Phaenius's topic in Hardware Hangout
I thought you were a "computer audiophile" , and assumed you knew VST, however: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Studio_Technology The two pages are a list of VST based Oscilloscopes and FrequenceAnalyzers, but there are also more non-VST ones, examples: http://www.zeitnitz.de/Christian/scope_en http://zelscope.com/ http://www.virtins.com/page2.html (there are tens of these) Some "generic" intro can be found here: http://www.ledametrix.com/oscope/index.html http://www.sciencetronics.com/geocities/electronics/projects/soundcard_osci.html You asked for a cheap way to measure signals, while some of these are completely Free, a few - more "robust" or "featured" ones can be bought for some ten bucks, and an optional buffered probe for - say - another ten bucks at the most: http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/hardware/hardware.html or a "direct" one with a few components you can get from *any* electronic device you were going to throw away or that you can recover from the waste bin: http://www.ladyada.net/library/equipt/diyaudioprobe.html which I consider "cheap" . FAQ #1 here is possibly the plainer explanation: http://www.zelscope.com/faq.html jaclaz -
Well, IMHO the chances of the posted batch to work on any of the two systems are pretty dim anyway, and the BAD news are that is potentially HIGHLY destructive . What happens if the directories are not empty? A /s parameter may be of use: http://ss64.com/nt/rd.html And I do have some BIG perplexities on the PATHs/filenames given to the del command: http://ss64.com/nt/del.html I would try with something like: i.e. with the full path inside the quotes and a single asterisk, but as a matter of fact if you try on a command line: md C:\mytest md C:\mytest\mytestsub echo test1>C:\mytest\mytestsub\mytest1.txt echo test2>C:\mytest\mytestsub\mytest2.txt echo test3>C:\mytest\mytest3.txt del "C:\mytest" you will see how you will be prompted with something like: (press N to the prompt). Now try issuing: CD /D C:\mytest del "C:\mytest\mytestsub" *.* You are now prompted with: this time press Y to the prompt, you will be immediately prompted: del accepts a LIST of files to be deleted, a line like this: will quietly delete all files in "%windir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files" and then delete ALL FILES in CURRENT DIRECTORY . jaclaz

W98 fails to set-up hardware - help request please
jaclaz replied to Jonssen's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Post a description of the actual hardware it is. As a General rule of thumb, open the case, remove each and every piece of hardware connected to it that is detachable (ALL add on cards and disks). Re-connect only the minimum needed things: some RAM a floppy drive a video card besides a keyboard and a mouse. Try booting from floppy, possibly run from it some DOS hardware tests. Then try again re-connecting ONLY the "system" hard disk, and try to boot in "safe mode". Then try again "normally". If everything works, forget about anything else but the SCSI card you *need* to access the back-up. (which specific card is it? One of those cheap "Iomega" ones or a "good" one?) How exactly was the "backup made"? Are you sure there isn't a way to restore it from "pure DOS"? Report what happens. jaclaz -
Windows 95 2.1GHz CPU Limit BROKEN!
jaclaz replied to LoneCrusader's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Just for the record, the version: is only listed on many sources as being a set of 3" 1/2 floppies (and NO CD-ROM) example: http://www.emsps.com/oldtools/mswin95v.htm Could you share the MS part number and (possibly) a photo of the actual CD? And/or additionally the file dates: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/158238/en-us Does it look *like* this one (which seemingly is the French version) - but this seems an OEM one: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-95-PCs-without/dp/B008FSOVPE/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top Compare with: http://thebuyonlinecom.appspot.com/buy-windows-online--20/detail/B000NRY05G/183-6121017-4226423 This could be it? - still seems to me an OEM one http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Software-Windows-95/dp/B000NRY05G/ref=?ie=UTF8&m=A2LGHWXS2DEZ7I This one could be it (the box) but if you zoom in on the image you see in top left that it is the 3.5" floppy version: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Windows-95-For-PCs-Without-Windows-Retail-Big-Box-3-5-Floppy-EUC-/321017778870?pt=US_Operating_Systems_Software&ssPageName=RSS:B:STORE:US:101&hash=item4abe2692b6&nma=true&si=FwwFAzwjL58Ot%2FguEM89YfQZYHk%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 it is possible that this same version was made on CD. jaclaz -
1. Karnac The Magnificent just sent me an e-mail, and he was quite upset and p***ed off by your assuming he wouldn't have understood that, he expressely said how it took him a split nanosecond (and not a million years). The meaning of "before" is that point 1 does NOT belong to the scene and needs NOT (and should NOT) be graphically represented in it, point 1 happens BEFORE and OUTSIDE the animated scene, rest assured that I perfectly know how to provoke such a reaction on the other part verbally . I have to make my compliments to you for your analysis and creativity about point 1, that is a lucid, intelligent, well thought-out layout. Overruled. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104952/quotes?qt=qt0404534 2. OK 3. OK 4. OK, the red brick is perfect! 5. OK 6. OK. For "surprised" see if either of these would do. 7. OK As an alternative for the "ducking" and "re-appearing" in #6 and #7 one could use the "squeezing" movement that you can find in this emoticon (of course without the bar clamp) . Thanks for the time you spend on this small project . jaclaz

Searching for a "cool" looking software music player

The good thing about crystal balls (even not perfectly tuned ones) is that I saw it coming in advance : Find a friend that knows how to use Photoshop, provide him with some good pictures of what the heck you want/like and you can have a skin exactly as you want it in very little time. jaclaz -
What you report is VERY strange (possibly in India after sale service is much better than anywhere else ) . It would be the first case ever reported of Seagate: offering itself for a firmware upgrade offering itself for a firmware upgrade without data loss Experiences reported on this forum are that: Seagate may offer itself to replace the disk drive (with NO guarantee whatsoever about data) Seagate telling the user to upgrade himself/herself the firmware (if the drive is not bricked) Seagate telling to contact i365 (their data recovery "branch") and i365 offering itself - on a case by case basis - to recover the data for free or against the payment or a rather high amount of money In any case, whatever Seagate (or whomever acting as Seagate representative) did to that drive, you did your best to lessen the probabilities of ANY data recovery from it. What do you want to do now? Possibilities: contact again Seagate (or i365) and ask them to attempt recovering the data attempt a DIY recover In both cases, if I were you, and if the disk is not in BSY or LBA0 state, I would first try to have a forensic sound image of the drive (you will need a new drive slightly larger than the original one, typcally a 640 or 750 Gb one). The Forum is full of examples on how to make such an image, a couple ones: jaclaz

No, an actual fbinst install is MUCH more complex than that, and it's behaviour/goals/whatever are actually documented/described: I was talking of a "plain" MBR code such as the 2K/XP/2003 or the Vista :ph34r:/7/2008 one (or even the good ol' DOS one) or something like partita or MBLDR (the latter is very, very good in my experience): My "base" assumption about the minimim number of neurons a BIOS programmer must have are explained in more details in the (already given) link: http://reboot.pro/index.php?showtopic=10503 (that you are kindly requested to read) jaclaz
