How to merge two text files?
jaclaz replied to tomasz86's topic in Programming (C++, Delphi, VB/VBS, CMD/batch, etc.)
For the record: http://www.robvanderwoude.com/useless.php jaclaz -
Yes, it's "normal": %path% is NOT a COMMAND , it is a VARIABLE . Try either of: SET PATH ECHO %PATH% jaclaz

Yep, sorry for the misunderstanding . Yep, but one thing is remembering them, and another one is finding one. Those types (with hinges) were extremely rare at the time, ideally *someone* could remember a definite make/model and then we could look for it. In the good ol' times I remember seeing a few 4U Rack Mount cases with a hinged lid, but even if it will do for you, it mught be a nightmare to find one jaclaz

More generally, there are boards with (say) 15 sub-forums, and regularly *any* new user, after having omitted to say "hi" anywhere, and forgotten to read the Rules (if any) proceeds to post *anything* in "General Discussion", contributing in making a mess of the board (and making life of the Mods - IF the board is kept tidy - unneededly more complex). jaclaz

Yes. Search for "flat winpe", statrt from here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825045.aspx jaclaz

Maybe it's not google, but a pebcak Would this do? http://www.amazon.com/Antec-NSK2480-Desktop-case-380W/dp/B000T4MRF8 jaclaz

Well, besides the issue about your opinion mattering or not , you may realize how we could set up a petition to actually split this thread to the sole scope of having you cease visiting. "Sign this petition to have MSFN mods split the abnormally long and substantially OT topic into n threads AND get rid of HalloweenDocument12 as collateral damage" About the "speed test", the actual study (page 18): http://www.principledtechnologies.com/Microsoft/MSN_loadtime_1112.pdf. fails to provide the actual script that was used. For all we know httpwatchscript.psl could contain (WARNING: PseudoCode): IF NOT %siteurl% CONTAINS "msn.com" SLEEP %random%*200 It's BTW interesting (still page 18) how: Which can be easily re-written as: OR as: jaclaz

Candidates for the batch #78000÷80000 are: And the winner is: jaclaz

Check this first thing: http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/serva You should try the above tutorial (following it to the letter) first, and see if you get the same error. Then (if you get not the same issue) try re-introducing the changes you need/want. jaclaz

Hmmm. Maybe we could start a petition here : http://www.thepetitionsite.com/ "Please don't cannibalize this poor thread on MSFN" I guess an initial target of 180 signatures could be adequate. jaclaz

This one is nice as, while being clearly a "save the wolves" vote on this other petition here: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/370/286/730/#13614913508052&action=fb_connect&fb_id=0 it could be considered a "valid" entry at first sight: Another one that needs a comment is IMHO this one : Dear [redacted], I am sorry to learn that you have no friends, nor any form of interaction with other human beings. The good news are that if you actually never sent anything to Gmail addresses google knew NOT of your existence (till today). The bad news are that now the evil google mail readers have been instructed to pin down one by one all the people that signed that petition and google will eventually track down your e-mail address (even if it is on Yahoo) and start sending to you ads and mails ONLY related to prostethic devices for males (and possibly also instructions/photos/videos on where and how exactly they are implanted). jaclaz

NO, not only "start menu" items, a lot of the bloat is made by running services (which are initiated/loaded at startup, but not through the start menu, see the previous post by Charlotte). jaclaz

Try seeing the half full glass: we are d@mn good as forum commenters , and particularly clever in keeping something on topic, as an example , I am of the same opinion of poster # 68,298 to the google petition: For the record, we are just above 70,000! ...and the winner is : # 70,074 which translates to: I believe Mr.Schmidt will be touched by the above and will stop putting small, tender, lovely, live animals onto the barbecue grill..... jaclaz P.S.: The article here (and expecially the graph ) needs to be updated: http://marketingland.com/microsoft-scroogled-campaign-against-gmail-33471

I concur. Really weird. jaclaz

@dyatrader BUT there is still a misunderstanding. Do no confuse bus speed with actual device (or data transfer) speed. Benchmark your disk (and possibly find a public benchmark of it and several other disk to make a comparison). A SATA interface is credited for THEORETICAL: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA as always happens most of the hype is about the theory, any common 7200 RPM hard disk SATA 2 or SATA 3 will not be that much faster than a very fast SATA1 disk, as more or less the "saturation" of a mechanical hard disk is near the 150 Mb/s (and in day-to-day opreration what really counts is read times and "random access") Check this: http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9175410/SATA_6Gbit_sec._Does_it_double_your_SATA_speed_ and this (to have an idea how different settings with differnet disk drives may be largely different): http://expertester.wordpress.com/2008/07/24/ahci-vs-ide-–-benchmark-advantage/ jaclaz

Well, if XP is "small", than 2K is "tiny "and NT 4.00 is not even viewable without a big magnifying glass.... jaclaz
-
Which one? The answers to these ones has been already posted. Yes, you *can* install to a SATA disk setting the BIOS in "IDE compatibility mode", it will work alright.. Yes, you don't *have to* enable AHCI in the future. No, you won' thave the *full* benefit from your SATA drive if you use not AHCI, the difference between what you will get in "ide compatibility mode" vs. AHCI is not easily calculated, a number of factors may affect it, including the model/make of the hard disk drive, the controllers used, etc., etc. And yes it is possible to install in "IDE compatibility mode" and only later "switch" to AHCI. jaclaz

And it must be some kind of "animalists" mailing list: # 62,511 # 62,280 # 62,122 # 61,954 # 61,848 # 61,710 # 61,600 # 61,578 The possible reference must be: http://www.causes.com/actions/1699497-help-tania-to-get-the-freedom-she-deserves BUT not only. It is possible that some joking guy made a game or a flash thingy linking to it: # 61,727 And ANOTHER SCOOP! Anyone going to calculate probabilities that two different people in NY will think, write and post in 2 minutes timeframe this same EXACT sentence? jaclaz

Actually I did not discret (nor maybe discredit) anything. I posted exactly what I posted. That I did not understand your reference to ICH10. AND stated how the motherboard support page has ONLY that "Marvell" file listed as SATA driver, and how I presumed that a motherboard manufacturer actually knows which drivers are needed for a motherboard they make AND provides the right drivers. Nothing more, nothing less. Now you explicited how, by reading info provided by the same motherboard manufacturer, it is clear (to you) how the drivers they provide are the wrong ones. You might want to look for the bolded italiciized verbs in the above on a dictionary jaclaz

I think they call that "a moment of clarity". He has described the antithesis of the cynical Microsoft Plan A Windows 8 OS unification. Does he even understand that he just admitted we have all been right from the git go and he has been wrong? Yes and no. Meaning he is doing hardware device "separation", in his (perverted) mind he wishes to have (and senselessly suggest people to have) : a home PC (running Windows 8) <- only for work at home a notebook (running Windows 8)<- only for work on the move a surface RT (running Windows 8 RT) <- because of the superior battery life, for play on the move a surface Pro (running Windows 8) <- because it has battery life that sucks but has both touch and keyboard so you can use mixed/mode input and use it both for work and play a (nonexisting yet) smallish tablet (running Windows 8 RT) <- because of the superior battery life and being more practical (as an example to senselssly chat while boarding the plane) only for play a smaller smartphone (running Window 8 Phone) <-because none of the above have decent use as a telephone, and only for work another smartphone (running Window 8 Phone) <-as the above but only for play Then (i.e. if people will be SO gullible and rich enough to afford all these) he will be able to say "See, you can see the advantage of a single interface common to all of these...." I can see Paul in the morning, right after shaving himself, choose both the tie suited to the shirt he puts on and right after choosing the device(s) he will carry with him during the day. Same goes when preparing his suitcase (where I am gonna go? To a business meeting in another town): : I 'll take my notebook because it is business and I will surely found a place in the meeting to plug it in the mains, or no, maybe it's better the Surface Pro, the flight is only 1 1/2 hours, and it is more practical on the plane, hmmm, I'll take both with me. Wait, what if I want to play a bit? Better take also the Surface RT also. Then I will get my "business" Nokia Lumia. Wait, what if the thing is boring and I want to play a Ruzzle or two? Better bring also the "smaller tablet", it is unconspicuous enough but has a larger screen than the Lumia.... jaclaz

It looks the petition has been hit by spammers (or a flow of unrelated posts/contacts was added to it by mistake). Some of the people that signed also left a comment. Besides the normal "STOP DOING THAT" or "I want my priacy" ones. Comments like: besides being apparrently senseless can be however "connected" to the topic of the petition but those like: Sound pretty much UNrelated to a privacy issue. ADDITIONALLY this comment here: # 53,980 http://www.thepetitionsite.com/997/086/864/tell-google-to-stop-going-through-your-email-to-sell-ads/?z00m=20503710#13614507292032&action=fb_connect&fb_id=0 Seem to imply that the signing of the petition has been solicited through (mass) e-mail Apparently that user received a message in English and BY REPLYING TO IT signed the petition and her reply was recorded as a comment. (this is also supported by quite a few comments like "I didn't know that .... ", "I am surprised that ...." and similar, this is what you write immediately after having knowledge of something, like after receiving an e-mail pointing you to the petition site) jaclaz

anyone used Windows Fundamentals for Legacy PCs?
jaclaz replied to ihateusernames's topic in Windows XP
...but nowhere in the world masses of people actually cried for this. ...as a matter f fact the very few people that got one legally were extremely happy for having NOT "Rover" in the search dialog. AFAIK a number of "missing features" listed are actually "good, intelligent removal of senseless bloat" . jaclaz -
The posted FUSE filesystem drivers approach actually does provide the solution, you have an "original" series of .flac files that are actually available ALSO AND AT THE SAME TIME as .mp3. The shortcoming of this approach is that decoding/re-encoding the file on-the-fly (and upon request) will need some (a lot of) computer power. Think (very simplified) to gzip. The gzip compression format is "pipable", so you can well keep your files gzipped, and have them uncompressed on the fly transparently, but this saves space at the cost of CPU cycles. It is possible in theory to make a .flac FUSE filesystem capable of stripping on the fly the metadata, which should be fairly simple and not hogging the CPU, but I don't think there is one already made: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/fuse/index.php?title=FileSystems Another couple examples: http://amaras-tech.co.uk/software/rfuse_flac_to_mov_fs https://www.uitwisselplatform.nl/projects/yacufs <- this one is seemingly dead http://cuemounter.codeplex.com/ <- Windows About the: file1 -> partA + partC file2 -> partB + partC IF the metadata is contained exclusively in the first part (or - if you prefer - part C is NOT metadata) it is also possible, though again I don't think something already exists. Just for the record, here is that concept applied to the whole filesystem (nothing you can actually use, just a "demo" or PoC), meet Overlapping FileSystem : http://reboot.pro/topic/2887-boot-bartpe-as-img-from-hdd-with-grub4dos/?p=19803 (idea was never actually finalized as there was little interest and it 's use would have been however useful only for very "narrow" scopes) jaclaz

CPU or GPU (more likely IMHO) overheating? Can you try with a cooling pad or similar to see if there is a difference (like doubling the time before the shutdown is forced/happens) jaclaz
