  1. Basically because usually it is a telling sign of some kind of SPAM (or of a user that panicked ), JFYI, it is more likely that in this case it is the beginning of a SPAM plot: http://www.thephotoforum.com/threads/a-psd-file-that-is-getting-error-message.396125/ most probably soon another new user will post a link to a Commercial software that allegedly recovers .psd files. But there are a few people that think (wrongly as the most they get is usually being either banned or ignored) that a "good strategy" is to post the same question on half the internet, which would not be a bad thing in itself IF as soon as a good answer is (hopefully) provided all the opened threads/questions would be updated with a link to such good answer (something that usually is not done). This latter behaviour (opening N threads and not following them) creates what I call "internet pollution", you do an internet search and find several results to your same question but without any answer to it. jaclaz
  2. No, you are not asking anything . Noone can understand what is "ISO file maker" or whatever "feature" you are talking about. You are just babbling something meaningless and doing so AFTER you have been told (possibly not clearly enough ): PLEASE, DO NOT use CENTERED alignment, DO NOT use any kind of "special" formatting of your posts. Write in plain, normal text UNLESS you want to highlight a specific part of your post, like a single word or a particular sentence, see also Rule #11: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=forums&module=extras&section=boardrules Please, if you have any suggestion, bug report or feature request do try to explain IN DETAIL what it is, the reasons why, etc., etc. jaclaz
  3. There is nothing particularly difficult in creating a .iso file (or creating a USB stick that can boot it, though whether to use Rufus or another tool more "deidicated" to XP is to be considered). The issue here may be that for *some* reason the "original" disc has some defect and thus is not a "good source". Simply get IMGBURN: http://www.imgburn.com/ then you Read the original disc saving it as an image file. Then you Write the image file to a new CD/DVD. The .iso image file can be used "as is" by a number of USB tools, I would recommend trying RMprepusb: http://www.rmprepusb.com/tutorials/install-xp-from-an-iso at first. jaclaz
  4. Well, with all due respect for the good MS guys, (and to you) it is something we had since YEARS and that even they made available a loong time ago. (currently I am using IMDISK that can mount a lot of other kind of images but the basic CD-Rom image mounting capabilities was here since day one or so). It is interesting how this page: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=38780 states that the thingy is: Version: 2.0.1.1 File Name: winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe Date Published: 4/23/2013 but the actual file (a self-extracting zip) contains these files: Directory di C:\temp\test116/02/2016 09.35 <DIR> .16/02/2016 09.35 <DIR> ..02/01/2003 18.04 1.152 readme.txt19/12/2001 11.45 23.552 VCdControlTool.exe19/12/2001 11.45 8.576 VCdRom.sys3 File 33.280 byteMaybe the function has been better integrated and all, but it is not like it is anything "new". jaclaz
  5. Whatever, is new, you get latest one from here: http://www.winsetupfromusb.com/ http://www.winsetupfromusb.com/downloads/ Curiously enough, version 1.6 is more recent than 1.5 and also of 1.4 and in the above page the main changes over a previous version are listed. jaclaz
  6. ... as expected, BTW, JFYI: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/173316-windows-10-prediction-and-os-ranking/#entry1092785 and actually something similar actually already happened: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/174201-windows-10-first-impressions/page-48#entry1102629 jaclaz
  7. Sure , anyone (including - hopefully and eventually - a program) can re-do something that has already been done in a fraction of the time it took you to find and test everything you did. If you had kept notes (roughly) of the time you spent since the delivery/deployment of the first copy of a given OS tweaking it until you were satisfied and "labeled" it "good enough" (i.e. excluding the small, little tweaks that came over time), I am pretty sure that it would graph into an exponential curve. In my completely twisted measuring method I introduce a factor to take into account the "relevance" of the tweak from a philosophical point of view, i.e. to take into account how "alien" would a system appear to a "normal, average user" [1] of the untouched same OS. Examples: replacing the built-in zip file reading provision with 7-zip (simply installing it) is 0.01 points by a relevance factor of 1x=0.01replacing almost the whole UI (Classic Shell+Aeroglass) is 2x1.5 points by a relevance factor of 3x=9 jaclaz [1] Imagine a kid, let's say born in the late 2000's that might happen to only see Windows 10 (and some Android and/or IOS devices [2]) that actually uses a Windows 10 device on a daily basis, how different will he perceive your tweaked install from his own? [2] To be fair the hypothetical kid might also have seen once a Windows Phone in the hands of a distant cousin from the country .
  8. Good , the only issue is now about the member name , at first sight I thought you were a Brit living in a French Bed & Breakfast that accidentally bought an Italian PC in a highway service area in Italy[1]. jaclaz [1] ... and curiously enough there was actually a PC in the box .
  9. Hi Shaieb I`m a old member to MSFN, welcome, my new blue centered friend As you should know, winsetupfromusb uses as boot manager grub4dos and you can add a background image to the grub4dos menu.lst alright, actually there are two ways, to add such an image, "plain" bitmap (splashimage) or GFX http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/files/splash.htm http://diddy.boot-land.net/grub4dos/files/gfxmenu.htm My best regards to you will be delayed until you will post normally, there is no actual reason for the fancy formatting... jaclaz
  10. Was there any doubt about it? Yep , the idea was just to underline the amount of "MORE", seriously, I only wanted to avoid the risk that your post could be perceived as "Windows 8.1 is OK" (it is not, only your particular setup or a similar one can be OK). Using my completely twisted measuring method, we could have these equations: Windows XP + NoelC's tweaks=98 Windows 7+NoelC's tweaks=99 Windows 8.1+NoelC's tweaks=100 Windows 10+NoelC's tweaks=83 Now, knowing that: Windows XP=85 Windows 7=78 Windows 8.1=48 Windows 10=3 It amounts to have NoelC's tweaks ranging from 13 to 80 , more in detail: NoelC's tweaks[XP]=13 NoelC's tweaks[7]=21 NoelC's tweaks[8.1]=52 and, notwithstanding the great effort with: NoelC's tweaks[10]=80 this last result doesn't really count because the total of 83 is worse than any of the previous ones.... jaclaz
  11. And (as actually expected) it is now the turn of Samsung (and their "smart" - please do notice the quotes - TV's): http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/02/05/your-samsung-smarttv-is-spying-on-you-basically.html http://theweek.com/speedreads/538379/samsung-warns-customers-not-discuss-personal-information-front-smart-tvs Samsung's official statement is on the same line as other similar statements: And the further knowledge that the "third party" is (currently) Nuance: http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-31296188 http://europe.newsweek.com/samsung-updates-smarttv-policy-names-third-party-collecting-voice-commands-305935?rm=eu may help (or it may not), they are seemingly the same guys behind at least part of the Siri experience: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuance_Communications jaclaz
  12. Are you - by any chance - attempting to install on a FAT32 (largish) disk partition? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/326673 Also check: jaclaz
  13. Shoudn't the archive be called DonationTool.zip? jaclaz
  14. It could be condensed to only 1 (one) edition, the "Working Edition" and then have the license (please read as money) govern which programs inside it will be accessible. jaclaz
  15. Well, no. You are NOT running 8.1, you are running a heavily modified/tweaked 8.1 that after months of hard work, numberless tests and tweaks, you managed to tame into an OS that behaves (more or less) like 7. Maybe we can say that the line for conservativeness is drawn at XP users, and that Vista SP2 and 7 SP1 users (please read as Vista SP4 ) are - more than conservative - practical. To be not-conservative you would need to run 8.1 as delivered by MS with only very minor modifications (and optionally also like it ) jaclaz
  16. Just in case, a "consolidated" hosts file from several sources: https://github.com/StevenBlack/hosts jaclaz
  17. It starts to look every day more like an Ed Bott vs. Gordon Kelly war. jaclaz
  18. VTECH has found a neat solution to security: http://www.troyhunt.com/2016/02/no-vtech-cannot-simply-absolve-itself.html changing the Limitation of liability in there T&C (Terms and Conditions) to include: jaclaz
  19. Yep, and it is a different level of "priority". Like: 1. my computer doesn't boot, HELP! <-code RED ... .... .... .... 2387. I cannot see a cute lolcat or latest prank video, HELP! <- code "whatever shade of pale white doesn't really matter" jaclaz
  20. Maybe people are starting to see tablets for what they are, a VERY LARGE smartphone (which in itself is not a bad idea IMHO) and not for what they attempted to market them (a very small PC replacement) . jaclaz
  21. Well, it's OFFICIAL now: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/feb/09/internet-of-things-smart-home-devices-government-surveillance-james-clapper jaclaz
  22. Like this one? jaclaz
  23. Sure they do , they have the secret seven, remember : http://homepage.ntlworld.com./jonathan.deboynepollard/Humour/microsoft-monopoly.html jaclaz
  24. Well , the point as often happens is not about why it was designed, but rather about how it was implemented. Surely, when it works, it works very nicely. jaclaz P.S.: you may well write the rules of the SATA club the way you want, but you simply cannot state that the rules for the IDE club that I just invented are not true, you are not even a member whilst I am a founder!
  25. Just in case, the first rule of the IDE club is: 1. You don't use Cable Select jaclaz
