  1. ... with compliments to the 64 bit architecture .... jaclaz
  2. Sure , what do you think the Nirsoft USBDeview does? Just in case: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html (like all Nirsoft thingies it is "plain", tiny, needs no install, let alone stupid .Net or any other framework) But if you want a "single pass" tool, here is USBOblivion: http://www.cherubicsoft.com/en/projects/usboblivion https://sourceforge.net/projects/usboblivion/files/latest/download jaclaz
  3. He CANNOT BOOT XP right now! When (IF) he will able to boot, then - maybe - he will have a problem with video drivers (or maybe not). Really you should take some time reading the posts before replying to them and when you reply to them, you should probably consider how your suggestions should be: 1) understandable 2) be reproducible (provide some references) Your suggestion above will sound a lot like Vogon's poetry to most people (here is a snippet so you will be able to appreciate the similarities). Gashee morphousite, thou expungiest quoopisk! Fripping lyshus wimbgunts, awhilst moongrovenly kormzibs. jaclaz
  4. Or you can re-create them, it should be easy/quick for you. Also, you may ask Fernando, he probably has a copy of them. jaclaz
  5. Yep, together with the true story about the Dallas thing. I do understand your enthusiasm and expectations, but here we are not talking of - say - a display driver with some graphical glitches, the storage subsystem is one of the main components of an OS and having it in any form less than 100% reliable would be - though nice - not usable. When (if) there will be such a thing, at 100% level of reliability, then it will take some more time to get it actually tested to 110%, and then - maybe - it will be something that you will be able to recommend as a solution. When you reply to people asking for a solution to a problem, it is not the same as when we are talking of experiments, these people have a REAL problem and - ideally - should be suggested REAL solutions or at least possible paths that they can take, not "wait some time and the solution will likely appear", you shouldn't ask people to sit idly waiting for something that will (may) happen making an act of faith in what you believe. JFYI, all SATA chips should have the "double" way of working (SATA+IDE) and the limitation could be the BIOS, particularly on laptops for *whatever* reason manufacturers tend to take an otherwise perfectly working BIOS[1] from one of the handful BIOS providers and senselessly modify it removing loads of options in the name of either simplicity or convenience (the real reason being IMHO usually sheer incompetence or lazyness). jaclaz [1] this does not apply to Insyde BIOS that are usually crappy from the start .
  6. Why don't you share your working txtsetup.oem for them (plus any other modified .inf file that may be needed)? jaclaz
  7. Please understand how the "next year" Dibya mentioned in this case means "an undetermined time in the future", it may be 1 month or 10 years and could even mean "never" . In other words you should have a "plan B". Which specific, EXACT make/model is it? (with this info - maybe - some modded BIOS or *whatever* alternative solution can be looked for) If there is not already an existing and tested solution to the issue you could think - just as an example - about selling it and procure yourself a surely compatible laptop. jaclaz
  8. The action of drag n' drop something over a .cmd file (batch file) is passed as first parameter to the batch, which is "%1". So, create a batch file as follows: @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL ENABLEEXTENSIONS ECHO %1 ECHO %~1 ECHO %~d1 ECHO %~dp1 ECHO %~dpn1 ECHO %~dpnx1 ECHO %~z1 PAUSE to have an idea of what you can get by dropping on the cmd file a directory. As the usual recommendation, using directory or filenames including spaces is not particularly smart because there is the need to put them into double quotes (and remove quotes when needed), BTW out of the three lines you posted one is wrong. jaclaz
  9. Sure , actually they (the broadband supplier) did the "right thing" or - if you prefer - the "courageous one", I meant that it was not a "limited to the said Swedish broadband provider" issue, it is (hopefully was) a thing that affected large numbers (in the EU at least). BTW, if it was a "rare", or - as stated in the "correction update" docs - "in some situations" only, it would have made no sense to make a recording, the broadband provider could have managed the "handful" of requests for assistance in the traditional way, in this case they must have been flooded by similar requests .... A more sensible statement from MS would have IMNSHO been: jaclaz [1] Completely invented number, just for the sake of it
  10. Well it's all over the news: jaclaz
  11. Which may soon make its (her? ) appearance in your thermostat or A/C control panel , JFYI: https://blogs.windows.com/buildingapps/2016/12/13/cortana-skills-kit-cortana-devices-sdk-announcement/ Cortana "unbound" (but tied to you) About the Internet (actually seemingly DHCP) mess, if it wasn't broken, why would they (attempt to) fix it? http://www.pcworld.com/article/3150013/windows/microsoft-rushes-out-windows-10-patch-to-fix-broken-internet-connections.html jaclaz
  12. Try using (temporarily) HotSwap!: http://mt-naka.com/hotswap/index_enu.htm That's what I did at the time and some time later (but I have no idea actually *how*) I managed to have "plain" "Remove Safely Hardware" working again. jaclaz
  13. It's strange. These kind of "Fn keys" utiltities are usually either "no driver needed" (because their functioning is embedded in BIOS) or "driver needed" (i.e. if the "special" driver for the keyboard is not installed all Fn functions such as brightness, contrast, volume, monitor switching, etc. don't work at all). The fact that only one of the Fn keys function does not work should mean that your laptop uses a "mixed mode". Do you have the ATK0100 driver installed (on the XP)? (You should have an Unknown device in Device Manager if you have not) In case it should be this one here: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/A6J/ATK0100_XP_061027.zip At least page A-10 of the manual http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/K55A/HelpDesk_Manual/ says so: http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/K55VM/E7187_eManual_K55VM_K55VS_Z104.pdf (but it could be a left-over for some other model, you never know with these crappy docs). If all the above fails, then you may want to try an external program, such as (example) Pangobright: http://www.pangobright.com/ jaclaz
  14. Yep, and imagine how happy was the average user to find himself/herself without Internet connection (think of your mom or uncle and how they would feel - righteousy - outraged to be asked to visit the MS sites for suggestions on how to solve the problem ...): http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-38301548 jaclaz
  15. The given resource: http://visihow.com/Restore_Lost_Brightness_Control_app_in_ASUS_Laptops_After_Updating suggests to "force" the use of the "Generic PNP Monitor", NOT the "PNP-Monitor (Standard)". Have you tried that? I was asking however if you have a device (the "ambient light sensor") connected to ACPI0008, and if yes, what was the ID of this sensor, it is a loong shot, but maybe a driver for it exists for XP. jaclaz
  16. Coincidentally: https://rosettaproject.org/disk/wearable/ jaclaz
  17. OT, but not much more OT than the other peeps, for *some* reasons I never fancied horses, let alone Thoroughbred. I know that it is largely irrational , but I always have the feeling that horses are somewhat unpredictable and whimsical, while - stubborn as they may be - I like donkeys and mules: as - all in all - at the end of the day they do their work without much fuss. jaclaz
  18. Oww, come on, buying mice online is so '90's ... Meet Mousestr : http://tinyurl.com/jlu58yj jaclaz
  19. Well, they had lots of slaves at the time, either a non-issue or one that the ancient ones solved quickly and almost effortlessly ... More seriously our archaeologists can read that data after 2700 years (maybe not understand it but at least read it), archaeologists 200 (not 2000) years in the future won't likely be capable of read our data, if you think that it is extremely difficult to boot a machine manufactured 35-40 years ago or so: http://www.righto.com/2016/09/restoring-ycs-xerox-alto-day-8-it-boots.html Compare how you can inspect the Diablo drive functioning against - say - a current Helium filled shingle recording hard disk (let alone SSD's). jaclaz
  20. You had an entire alphabet? *LUXURY*, in my day all we had was mud and straw, and only the letters U and R, and we liked it ... ... KIDS today! For those not familiar with this meme: https://tinyapps.org/blog/misc/200702250700_why_in_my_day.html jaclaz
  21. Saving 10 bucks ... (and a later revision, which should men manufactured more recently): http://www.ebay.com/itm/MICROSOFT-900-255-018-REV-P-ISA-INPORT-DEVICE-INTERFACE-ADAPTER-CARD-/322191278411?hash=item4b0418c14b:g:eVUAAOSwyDxXhprV jaclaz
  22. A not-so-stupid solution might be connecting the NAS through a "hub" (what is now a "switch") with the power adapter connected to a remotely operated/switched mains socket that is switched on only at backup time, or use *something like* this: http://www.digital-loggers.com/lpc7.html to switch on/off directly the NAS (es), as if we go for the good ol'way, you would need three separate NAS/network disk drives . Once upon a time you had three diskettes (or three Zip disks, or three tapes): #1 marked Monday, Wednesday, Friday #2 marked Tuesday,Thursday, Saturday #3 marked 1st of the month <- only used once and then replaced by a new media Since only one media was inserted in the backup device, the other two (even if maybe a bit older) were never at risk of being overwritten/damaged. jaclaz
  23. Looong shot, but check how the monitor is seen in device manager: http://visihow.com/Restore_Lost_Brightness_Control_app_in_ASUS_Laptops_After_Updating If I get it right, the Fn+F5/F6/F7/F8 need not a driver but only work on some monitors with some ACPI settings because of conflicts with the "adaptive brightness": https://www.asus.com/support/faq/1015071 The good Linux guys with this problem seemingly disable the "light sensor" ACPI0008 with an acpi_osi boot parameter: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1348890 Check also the exact PID/VID (or Prod/Ven) of the device you have, maybe there is some Asus driver for an earlier model with the same ID's. jaclaz
  24. Well, particularly with Powershell (which is IMHO a rather wide attack surface) I don't think that there are really-really safe ways (short of physical disconnection from network) if not limiting the access to the network share, I seem to remember that network accesses/credentials are normally cached, so you need to have *something* that deletes those right after the backup has completed (and that re-connects with the appropriate credentials right before next backup session). jaclaz
  25. I guess the AMD guys are all busy bickering with Linux kernel maintainers lately ... If you are not aware of the current issues, they tried to have their drivers "integrated" in the kernel, they were told them that the way they were implementing it was not acceptable, they went along nonetheless and recently they were officially denied the merge by Dave Airlie: https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/dri-devel/2016-December/126516.html jaclaz
