Now who the <bad names> thinks FX5200 is better than GF2 Ti?? Today the ATi Radeon 9800 class is faster than the X300 SE. Its easy to figure out how. Although the newer product has hardware support for some new technologies, its overall clock rate and memory are too slow to compete with the top-class of older generation. Most of the FX5200s are still paired with lousy 64-bit RAM although they are fully capable of a 128-bit interface. And even big manufaturers like ASUS and MSI don't mention the channel width of their value/entry series. Its an easy theoritical reason: The FX5200 has more processin power, but lesser memory bandwidth, hence its fill rate is lesser. Texture fill rate directly depends upon the memory and AGP bus bandiwths (OK, that's what I've been able to learn from Tom's hardware). So, the end result is that the FX5200 is theoritically faster, and the GF2 Ti is practically faster. Now since your motherboard is a very good one, the only option is to overclock. It has a fine-tuning clock generator. Tom's Hardware, in the days of Pentium III, tested this board on FSB 185 MHz. That's cool. Pity you don't support Tualatins. EDIT: Oh sorry, I mean your mobo, of course. Try if your CPU can do it. I myself am going to get an Intel D815EEA2U + Intel Celeron 1.1G. That's why I can OC it to a higher FSB (It has the same amount of cache as Tualatin P-IIIs). Oh yeah and I'll use CPUFSB. (If anybody can recommend me some other way, please PM me. Of overvolting it also, plz.) Also, try pushing your RAM to tightest possible timings. Normally all branded PC133s manufatured in 2003/2004 can do 145-153 MHz w/ CL2 and even that on stock voltages. If it doesn't do, try changing the vDIMM. And ah, getting a faster processor wouldn't hurt you. B'coz it means a bigger multiplier and higher overclock. (My own P-III 733 MHz reaches 797 MHz @ FSB 145, but the integrated AC'97 controller crashes there, and please nobody recommend me to get a newer sound board. I wouldn't be OC'ing in the first place if I had enough to get a faster system . Now think if it were an 866 MHz one. Hmmmmm, possibilities). And plz ppl don't think of me as an OC'ing geek. Its only to sqeeze out most power out of an outdated/near-retirement/old system. I don't recommend OC'ing to anyone having a 2+ GHz PC. And note it, benchmarks are sometimes very betraying. I've seen some systems passing in benchmarks w/ flying colours (is that the right idiom?) but everyday tasks such as opening My Computer becomes a real pain. EDIT: Where did you find a Seagate 80 GB w/ 8 MB cache? They don't do any 8 MB under 120 GB. Is it SATA? Are you using an add-on board to connect it to your system? What is its model no.?

Pirates given a month to pack in Pakisthana Anyway I don't think this will ever happen. Although the main centre of piracy here is Karachi & not the NWFP (North West Frontier Province - wonder why they couldn't come up with a smaller name ) but how can BSA control the piracy when the big boys out there can buy the whole police force by bribe? Uncomprehensible. Can somebody explain it? Yes they tried it about a year ago but they only caught 3 trucks full of 14,000 - 20,000 CDs each, and then? All pause. Rumour was that the police had eaten 'their share' and an excuse be made to the foreigners that we are short of police personnel. (That we are really short of: That is, nearly all of our provincial ministers have at least 3 patrol vanettes in their motorcade, and whenever 'our' president Pervez Musharraf - whom we prefer to call Musallat - which means enforced on us against our will - comes to Karachi the 1,100,000 city is put into curfew, traffic stopped at all intersections etc. for complete 8 hours, and a policeman and paramilitary person at every 50 ft.). So how would they make 'those police raids'? Somebody help me understand this. Somebody tell me how is it possible? IMHO this is paper-talk and lip-service.

In 'Control panel' go to "Power Options'. Here you will see a special tab (it doesn't appear on dome systems, that's why its special) named APM. On this tab, there is only one line: "Enable Advanced Power Management on this PC". Put a check in its checkbox. Restart and then shut down. The PSU should switch off by itself. Note: If you don't see an APM tab, go into BIOS and enable APM/ACPI in Power Management. It should already be enabled or even not found in the BIOS since it is an HP mainboard and fewer options should be available to you in the BIOS. EDIT: OMG I just went to the washroom while typing this and when I'm back I see the prob has been solved. Seems people here are very smart indeed.

Most probably it is asking for the WinXP SP2 CD. That's b'coz this OS shipped with a generic driver for devices of this sort. I've heard of this type of problem, but personally never seen it. Also, did you install the OS directly from CD or did you do it from a copy of your CD on the HD. The best method is the second. Copy the whole XP or Win98 CD into WinXP/Win98/WinXX folder in your last partition and then install it. That way it directly accesses that folder when Windows needs it. No need to insert CD.

I had a VIA KX133 (Soltek SL-77KV) w/ similar problem. Then I installed the Hyperion drivers. Find out the chipset drivers on AMD's site (sorry but in too much hurry to give you the link). Usually it is a package of four drivers: 1. AGP GART driver. 2. IDE controller driver. 3. USB controller driver. 4. This one I cannot remember . You need the GART driver. Then most probably the 2x mode would switch on by itself. You don't need to tweak things in the BIOS for it. That's because in most branded PCs they think that their users are dumb-asses and don't provide too much settings to the user. P.S: That's the same with my current mobo. Its an ASUS CUSL-L (out of an HP Pavilion xt860), and I bought it (from a garbage store, that is) considering the CUSL-2 was an outstanding overclocker. But oh my! I can't even see the memory timings. And OMG! When I emailed HP to give me some BIOS which allows me some more control they replied that "this machine is meant for home users and.....". Tut, tut, tut. Do they think that a home user would be overclocking or a server admin. Anyway I've outsmarted them and use CPUFSB to OC my 733/133 to 797/145. Although it goes right up to 843/153 w/o any volt-modding (that I can't do given the **** BIOS) but the biult-in Crystal sound fails at that. SO much so for those mobo manufacturers thinking that automation is good. It only adds to our problems. Let it auto but also give us control over it.

Best defined as dry solder. That is, due to the thermal stresses the solders become loose (have just tiny air-bubbles inside then which can't be seen by naked eye). Since the voltage is very low, there can be no induction and the chip fails altogether. This problem mostly occurs in graphics cards and mobos, sometimes in generic RAM modules too. Get the mobo out, wash it with some soap solution. Then blow it with a powerful (household but powerful) air-blower. That'll make the water sit in the holes (or bubbles) and complete the connection. At least this amount of pain will make the system going for about a week, or anyway until the time the water evaporates due to the chip's heat. That's also a useful tip to squeeze money out of some everybody Joe young who doesn't know why his 10-yr old system is not functioning well. This type of problem arises by frequently turning off & on of the system. Look at those servers. They are installed once and they never show this type of behaviour since they keep continuously running for almost 3 yrs. That's why I never intermittently shut down my PC. Only standby when I'm not there. It runs 15 hrs a day. Anyway even if the system is doomed, it may have a working HDD, etc. I wish the very best with it. Also, the least Pentium III was a Katmai core 450MHz, read once again the label on the CPU. OR maybe it was an OEM one?

Oh no man, you can ship this trash to Pakistan, You can easily make US$1000 per shipment. Anyway, good luck for you so that you find a great no. of parts in OKAY state.

As of 18th Nov, there is a new interface on www.webmessenger.msn.com.

Get rid of all the other components. Leave only the AGP card, CPU, RAM on the board. Then swap the PSU and CPU to see if the problem repeats itself. Also try looking on ASUS's website for BIOS update logs. Looks like the board is a high-end board with thousands of built-in controllers. Try turning these off from BIOS.

If its a Pentium (what's the Pentium 1? Did anybody know there'd be a 2 to follow! lolz) you don't need to waste time on it. Also try changing components with other systems, so you can find out which one is bad. However I wouldn't recommend even doing that, since all your other systems are very old, and tinkering with these old men most of the times have them losing display (no POST) and other problems consuming lots of time. If you've got a newer system, then do it. Also, by your description, its got an ATX supply. ATX supplies once switch on when plugged in, then turn off (the mobo is always powered on, OK. Else how would it send the signal to the PSU to turn the relay on.). So if you mean that when you insert in the plug the fans rotate about a quarter-rotation and then the power goes of but the LED remains on it is OK. That's no extraordinary behaviour. The extraordinary behaviour is that is isn't POSTing. P.S: You could find even better computers in trash if you're in Canada (I think that the flag shows) +if you try of course. We here in Pakistan are having older Pentium II and III machines by the trailer (=that big 40 ft. container truck) every month, and they are all going very popular, since the only investment in them are shipping charges. Otherwise they are very free of cost.

I've just got an HP Pavilion XT860 motherboard (ASUS CUSL-L rev. 1.04). Now it is an OEM board and its BIOS thinks all dumb people are using the machine and doesn't let me overclock it. The clock gen is an ICS 9250-25. I've been able to run the CPU @ 843MHz by pushing the FSB to 153MHz, but CPUFSB is shareware. Anyway, can you ppl recommend me any freeware tool.

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19494 As a local AMD dealer, our sister company would like to utilize this offer and directly import from Europe. Our main interest will be the Sempron 3100+. Point is, which of these distributors has the best repute. We intend to get the shipment directly FedEx'ed/DHL'ed to Karachi, Pakistan. Which one of them gives a no-pain warrantee. The company estimates its requirements to range from 15-120 pcs. a month. Plz. tell me of other points we should take care of.

Hacking is the art of gaining admin/root access to a computer system, without the intention of their user/admins/owners etc (whether it may be for constructive/destrucutive purposes, or just for fun, or to boost your ego, or to induce self-confidence, or for programming practicing ). And some average Joe young thinks that hacking is the name of causing explosions in computer systems like we see in the James Bond movies. P.S: Has anybody some idea how so high power wiring ends up just behind the touch screen that it can set the whole building to fire?

I got TRSDOS .

It loohs like the RAM. Before formatting again, get one stick out and try. Also try pushing RAM at max. latencies. It may be a bad cluster on the HD too.

Nothing was there. Its a really feeble attempt @ getting the attention of the stupid public from the point that after so many days Bush-Blair have not found the WMDs. That's why we call him George War & Ambush.

what would you charge for pc repair reates, etc...
rupert86 replied to ceez's topic in General Discussion
Oh wow, $80!! That means $$$ large amout of money $$$ for us. Here in Pakistan labour is very inexpensive. We do a complete install of: Win98 All device drivers OffXP MSIE 6 MSN msngr Yahoo msngr mIRC McAfee or Norton whatever they want. ACDsee Some sort of download manager WMP 9 RealPlayer basic WinZip and if the person has a faster system like Pentium II then WinXP also and all the above listed software on this side too. (That's a standard list of software, it may grow longer or shorter). This all sometimes takes abt 20 hrs on a really slow machine like having a meager Celeron 450MHz + 196MB RAM. The charges: Rs. 350. ( US$1= RS. 58). That means abt $6-7. Oh gosh, if we went on charging in the likes of $50-90 (Rs. 3000-5000), only the installation cost would get them many PCs of the same config. I think I'll come to US to open a repair & maintenance shop. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ -
If its an OEM one (out of a branded system, I have owned a similar one some months ago), its easy to chack it. If its OEM, it has a black front panel. You can get its firmware from here. I also have it, sized 337k, so I can't post it here . This firmware (v1.08) solved my buffer underrun problems. Also not all old burners support 700MB capacity.

If you mean computer games publishers, just go on their sites such as www.ea.com or www.eidos.com (plz. copy-paste, I'm in fast reply mode). These homepages have their logos on the top frame, usually on the right hand corner.

Both thumbs, right handed. Or when in good mood, my left middle finger (my hand hops and my finger hammers at the spacebar). Thats seldom, anyway.
-
Now that's very nice question. Look here, car/CPU/GPU designs are stolen. It is most probably that: 1. The rival of the game developer/publisher wants to have a peek at what graphics detail level/story-line/audio effects/engine enhancements the other is employing, so that they themselves can come up with an answer in a very short time. BMW/Mercedes, Toyota/Honda, other rival pairs etc. keep bribing the clerks, peons, sweepers etc. (even the MDs & CEOs) to get a hint of what new technologies the other is incoporating. The same way ATi/nVidia pair does, the same way Intel/AMD do it. 2. Some geek (who may be an employee of the company) gets a copy of the king by acquiring access to the code (just look very smart/important in other's eyes). 3. Its a very major possibilty that the company leaks the code on its own intent. Because the pre-release version is not even beta. Its very unstable, crashes too much, and overall needs more than one major code overhauls. So why spend on engineers (who's job is to play games :-) ) when there are thousands out there to try it, play it and then post info about bugs, or features that are not correctly working. Then read all the threads on different BBSs/forums and voila! The whole world says, "Despite code theft/program leakage they've managed a very good peice of software."

Oh yes but compressing 100MB or so, the .ZIP and .RAR differ each by a mere 1-1.5MB. Not considerable difference. I'm using WinZIP 9.0 SR-1, WinRAR 3.40.

I'd try it if its anything below 4MB (four megabytes). Its no problem me downloading a whole CD except it'd take two whole weeks. I think redistributing a XP CD is illegal. I don't think MS will sue you, either, coz you are just increasing their popularity. Anyway I've heard that whatever XP key, etc. you are using, if you have the license (that printed on torquoise paper), you will not be sued. Just click help -> 'is my copy of XP legal', and read. E.g: Sb has 20 PCs. He has 2 XP pro CDs, but 20 XP pro licences, and he's legal, maybe even (I disremember it, coz I practically (not to be too proud of) don't care about that legal stuff) if he is using serial nos. other than printed on them. Edit: W/ all this debate going on, why don't you try something else to increase XP's usability? After all you seem to be a good coder.
