  1. Never heard MMC for Win98. Must b the program you are trying. I would recommend you go for SmartDefrag from iobit.com. It runs silently in the background and starts automatically if your computer is idle for few minutes. Just install, configure, and forget about defragmenting your HDDs. -- Best Regards, DreamsCentral Twitter: @DreamsCentral Signed: Sunday, October 18, 2009, 5:39:53 PM IST
  2. Hi Vinifera, Your logic is not wrong at all. The prefetch is just a one of the many gimmicks that MS shows off to make it seem the best thing. You must how noticed the accelerators in IE8 (http://bit.ly/5QtpG). How many of us use them? And are they really accelerators? For example, the email accelerator just takes you to your email provider - but still ppl think that IE8 is gr8. Your email client is more faster than those accelerators. Same logic with prefetch: Showing off something that is not really useful. Logically thinking, it is an added process to further slow down the functioning of machines with lower memory. Another similar process is the Settings Transfer Wizard. It never worked for me. Neither did the Windows default Backup in System Tools. Software Biz also needs to show off as with anything. Anything claiming to offer more - sells more. Microsoft is not the same as it used to be. With Allen cornered and Gates surrounded with stupid advisors, they are ruining a hard built company (The complete story of MS minus its negatives: http://bit.ly/rmj47). I was surprised to see that IE is not their own product nor was Basic. They did work on Basic but IE, they literally stole it from a third party vendor. Guess, m going off-topic. Keep me posted... would like to hear more on MS issues that are growing day by day. -- Best Regards, DreamsCentral Twitter: @DreamsCentral Signed: Sunday, October 18, 2009, 11:35:27 AM IST
  3. This is a typical issue. I guess we should wait for experts to interfere. -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Twitter: @DreamsCentral http://dreams-central.com/testimonials.htm Signed: Sunday, October 11, 2009, 8:40:03 PM IST
  4. Hi, As per your figure, everything seems fine. Just check and see if the Broadcom Network Adaptor is enabled in the Laptop you are trying to connect. In case you wish to configure this again, select "Setup a Home office/Biz Network" in Network Connections then select Next and Finish. A new Wizard will appear that will guide you setup a new connection. Still, I guess there might be a problem with your Broadcom Adaptor. Please let me know if it helped. 6. @ekasol: Does that answers my question or the above one? -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Signed: Monday, September 14, 2009, 11:58:14 AM IST
  7. Would like to know if there is anyway to display my own logo upon startup w/o having to reinstall XP again... Just finished with reinstallation and networking... so don't wish to spend anymore time again on installing using the above method. Thanks! -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Signed: Thursday, September 10, 2009, 10:30:09 PM IST
  8. Hi All, I use a HP notebook that has both WLAN card and a switch that I suppose employs LED signals when on, to connect to wireless networks in range. The HP notebook runs on Windows XP SP2... This one is set with a wired broadband connection. I also use a wireless USB broadband when roaming. Occasionally, I have to bring in my office's TVS laptop to home (contains XP as well). I cannot install the USB broadband on this one due to user permissions. The only way is to plug in the wired broadband into this one if I need to access Internet. So far so good... The problem arises when I need Internet access on both computers. Though I can use the USB on my fixed system, I still wish to know if both laptops can be connected through this LED Wireless on HP computer. I tried to create one using the Wireless Network Wizard but it won't boot saying some file is missing. I had to log in to DOS and restore my system! Any ideas here? Thanks! -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Friday, September 04, 2009, 8:17:52 PM IST
  9. Hi, As far as I can go back - to the times when I was working on DOS based machines, it should be FAT only and NOT FAT32. MS DOS could support only upto 16 bit so FAT32 fails if you run MS Windows 3 and sometimes Win 95 too. You can easily use FAT32 for any Windows OS after 98. BTW, why would you require this information? Just curious...
  10. I dont think you need to download any third party. After I recommended COMODO in the second post, I did some research and set my PC so that it automatically goes straight to the desktop without any login screen. The command is "control userpasswords2". You can use it to disable other accounts too, but it is not advisable to disable admin account (the first one from top). I also wrote a step by step guide to the process that can be found at http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows.../42774.aspx?p=2 Hope this is what you are looking for. -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. 11. I guess something went wrong when you installed MOZY. I used on my XP based computer with only 512 RAM - for more than three months without any problems. Later, I switched to Idrive as the latter is more faster than MOZY while restoring files. Check it out. -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Monday, August 24, 2009, 9:44:38 PM IST
  12. I used SP3 for few days - experienced some good problems - removed it. The SP3 creates conflicts with some processes of OFFICE 2007, especially OUTLOOK 2007. I was not comfortable using it so finally removed it and came back to SP2. Also, one of the issues with SP3 is that you won't find some MS progams in ADD/REMOVE if you had installed them before installing SP3, example IE versions above 6. So if you wish to reinstall IE 8, for example, you will have to remove SP3 before it appears in the ADD/REMOVE for uninstallation... Pretty time consuming... Eventually, I felt that its better to stick with SP2 rather than going on to SP3 to keep on facing regular problems... You may find some good comments at http://www.reviewsaurus.com/tips-tricks/wi...stall-problems/ Also, check out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950717 . You can understand how many problems it can create. -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Sunday, August 16, 2009, 2:02:39 AM IST
  13. Check out the DOS based bootable FDISK program, a bit outdated but I still use it. It wont accept NTFS... so the best method is to delete all the partitions, create primary and secondary partiions again in FAT32 system, and activate primary partition where you intend to install your OS. It will also format your HDD. Once done, you can convert the partitions to NTFS as you load Windows, where it asks for format... a quick format with NTFS will be enough. Later you can create and format the logical partitions using the Disk Management. -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Sunday, July 05, 2009, 9:33:27 PM IST
  14. Got the resolution. I just went to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Acrobat 7.0\PDFMaker and saw two folders saying Mail and OFFICE. Assuming this can give me relief, I created a system restore point and then deleted both directories. They contained some WORDPDFMAKER.DLL files and similar files that gave me the clue. Sorry for wasting your time. And if it helps, send me a message... Enjoy the weekend! -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Signed: Friday, July 03, 2009, 6:41:37 PM IST
  15. Hi, Ever since I installed Adobe Acrobat, my computer slowed down. I was cleaning and removing junk and registry assuming they are problems. However, last night I opened the task manager to see how memory is used when I use different programs. The major portion of memory was allotted to Outlook and F-Secure. Studying the usage further, I saw that the memory usage of Outlook increased when I am performing any action on it. Furthermore, I saw that Acrobat also consumes considerable memory. And when I opened more programs, the memory usage of F-secure increased. This was made more clear as I kept open the task manager while opening and closing programs. The deductions: Outlook already has several unwanted add-ons and the Adobe options are making it use more memory. Also, F-secure's usage of memory depends on the number of programs opened at a time. I don't understand the logic behind F-secure's memory usage. Anyways, I removed most of the optional components from OFFICE and thereby OUTLOOK using the Change Option in Add/Remove Programs. So that decreased the memory consumption to some extent. However, I guess if I am able to remove the Adobe menu from it, it will decrease considerably as Acrobat is also a good RAM occupier. Now I need to remove the Adobe Menu that automatically came in to OUTLOOK and several other applications. Is it possible to remove the ADOBE option without having to uninstall the Adobe Acrobat. I need Acrobat 7 to convert files to PDF format and for the Adobe printer, otherwise I would have used older versions that don't force other applications to include the Adobe option. I removed it from IE using "Manage Add-Ons" but I could not find a way to remove it from OUTLOOK. BTW, I installed the Acrobat using the Adobe CS2 CD, if that makes any difference and it is OFFICE PRO. Any workaround will also help a lot because I need to keep my OUTLOOK running. I also hate the spam filter button that came in via F-Secure. Thanks! -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Friday, July 03, 2009, 6:18:30 PM IST
  16. Hi All, PART A I am facing this problem for the past many weeks. While I can access other websites without the login page, I have to enter login information for Google everytime I want to use any application of Google. I have checked all the settings in the Internet Explorer and have removed the checkbox against the Delete Cookies under Delete Browsing History. Other applications work fine. I use CCleaner and have added exceptions to it, including Google. Anyways, that is too far. I have to log in almost every hour even if I dont do any cleaning. I am not able to figure out why is this happening and whether it is happening with me only or others are also facing the same problem. PART B The second problem is that I face very slow post-boot for almost 10-15 minutes after each cleaning with the CCleaner. Like when I restart my computer after cleaning, each application takes too long to load (especially IE8) and sometimes I have to use task manager to end the process and again restart it after a while. Then, after few more minutes, things run smoothly. PART C On another note, I have some auto defrag and auto backup processes that give me access to desktop otherwise, until I clean. I thought they can be the problem and moved them to delayed programs list using Winpatrol but they come back to the startup. Can anyone tell how to make registry changes so that I can delay some startup programs. And can RAM OPTIMIZERS help with this? The most troublesome are PART A and PART B. Please suggest. Thanks -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Signed: Friday, July 03, 2009, 12:59:31 AM IST
  17. Hi, I am not good at this but as far as i know, there should be an option in the software you are using for backing up your data. Most of them do. If not, I guess that you may have to do it manually, but that again depends upon the type of image being created. If it allows you to see the contents of backup, you can go ahead and remove the deleted files. I use IDrive for continuous backup... and it offers both options. If you could specify the software, maybe I can dig out some info for you. Cheers, -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Wednesday, July 01, 2009, 3:20:00 PM IST
  18. Hi, There is a provision in the Comodo System Cleaner, (under Utilities --> Login) to login directly to a user without having to enter details. Though I have not used it, it may help you bypass restrictions and log in without the welcome screen. You can download it for free at comodo.com However, it does not provide option to disable logoff. To do that, you can use the GPEDIT.MSC if you are using XP Pro. Hope this helps for the first part. I cant help with the second issue related to control panel. -- -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Signed: Monday, June 29, 2009, 7:52:04 PM IST
  19. Well yes.. I did not notice that. However, while researching for an article on Drive letters disappearing in Windows Vista, I read somewhere that if you install Vista from boot disk directly, it changes the partition letters and takes over C drive most of the times. It also said that it is better to install XP and then install Vista from within XP (instead of boot installation) to keep the drive letters intact. I did not save the URL however. As you said, someone with more experience can help! -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Thursday, June 25, 2009, 1:07:52 PM IST

  21. I remember seeing an option saying "Disable Welcome Screen" when i opened GPEDIT.MSC some time ago. Check it out. You may also use the Windows PowerToy Tweak available at Windows Download Center to Disable the welcome screen. However, I am not sure if they will work as you intend.

    About nLite

Hi, This may sound a bit odd. I have more than ten years of experience in troubleshooting computers, from the days when Windows 3.1 was launched newly. Though I take pride in dealing with most of the Windows XP and prev versions' problems, I still do not know about the nLite. The Google search shows it as a tool that helps you reduce the load of XP on your computer. Is it an OS or kind of modifier to OS so that one may use XP on low end systems or to speed up systems. Can anyone clarify the above doubts and also tell me some benefits of using nLite? Thanking you, -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Signed: Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 9:08:11 PM IST
  23. Hi, I had the same problem. I contacted HP chat support and they gave me links to all the device drivers that I now carrry on a CD. I guess you too can do the same. It hardly took 20 minutes for me to get to the rep and get all the relevant links. The only time taken is while downloading. -- Best Regards, DreamSkape Signed: Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 8:59:40 PM IST
  24. Hi, I recently downloaded Pidgin so that I can use both my Gtalk and MySpace IMs using the same Pidgin IM. While I am able to connect to all other IMs, I just cannot connect to MySpace IM. I do not know the reason. I guess, I have all the settings correct. I wrote to the Moderators over there, but got no response. I need MySpace to stay in touch with my clients. Please help. Thanking you, -- Best Regards, Arun Kumar M. Signed: Monday, June 15, 2009, 5:29:14 PM IST
