  1. I think that it may be more appropriate to open a new topic on this rather than replying on the sticky one: $$$$ ones are out of questions. Please voice out your suggestions and experience. Btw, why BurnAware (with adware/spyware?), Active ISO Burner http://www.ntfs.com/iso-burning.htm and ImgBurn http://www.imgburn.com/ are not on the list? Updates: BurnAware does not support 98; Active ISO Burner may not qualify due to its sole purpose...
  2. I tried Abiword 2.4.6 on 98SE. It's disappointing that IME is not working. How did people usually input CJK?
  3. This attempt sounds interesting! I may be your product some day. Thank you.
  4. Agree! I joined this forum for appreciating their efforts! Just want to give my special thanks to those contributed in the 98 stream.
  5. I've been using IE6 for years. I am switching to Firefox 2 in these few days. See the story in Fast browser for 98 Indeed, it rocks and worths a try.
  6. I recalled that I intended to try Babelpad before; however, I couldn't locate the 98 version from the official website. Therefore, I gave up. Should I switch to kompozer when nvu was abandoned? What's your comments? Btw, the Firefox source editor is not bad at all, it supports both Unicode and IME nicely. Are there any chance that I can invoke the editor alone? There is only one exe under the Firefox directory.
  7. Just one minor point to clarify. My FF2 works happily on 98SE. I triggered the IPF on MSVCRT.DLL on the following 2 occassions only: * opening insanely many tabs; or * leaving the FF2 idle for a while The SP4 vcredist.exe should contain the consistent set of files required: VCREDIST INF 3,208 08-30-00 3:43p VCRedist.inf PRESETUP EXE 28,672 08-30-00 3:45p PreSetup.exe 50COMUPD EXE 509,984 06-24-00 10:40a 50comupd.exe ASYCFILT DLL 147,728 02-11-00 4:58p asycfilt.dll ATLA DLL 73,785 02-11-00 4:58p atla.dll COMCAT DLL 22,288 02-11-00 4:58p comcat.dll MFC42 DLL 995,383 02-11-00 4:58p mfc42.dll MFC42U DLL 995,384 02-11-00 4:58p mfc42u.dll MSVCIRT DLL 77,878 06-16-98 7:45p msvcirt.dll MSVCP60 DLL 401,462 06-16-98 7:52p msvcp60.dll MSVCRT DLL 278,581 03-07-00 3:22p msvcrt.dll OLEAUT32 DLL 598,288 02-11-00 4:58p oleaut32.dll OLEPRO32 DLL 164,112 02-11-00 4:58p olepro32.dll STDOLE2 TLB 17,920 02-11-00 4:58p stdole2.tlb ATLU DLL 58,938 02-11-00 4:58p atlu.dll ADVPACK DLL 74,960 02-14-00 12:24p ADVPACK.DLL W95INF32 DLL 4,608 02-14-00 12:24p W95INF32.DLL W95INF16 DLL 2,272 02-14-00 12:24p W95INF16.DLL Regarding the quad, I tend to keep my existing ones as they are newer: ASYCFILT.DLL 2.40.4518 OLEAUT32.DLL 2.40.4518 OLEPRO32.DLL 5.00.4518 STDOLE2.TLB 2.40.4518 Though I upgraded to the SP4 already, the cause of the problem should be related to GDI resources. After opening insanely many tabs, the GDI resources are used up. Are there any tuning can be done for GDI under 98? I can't find the solution yet; however, this article is explanatory: Difference between Ram and Resources
  8. Thanks for your suggestion. I'll try update the VC runtime to SP4 first to try for improvement. And only update to later (SP5 or even SP6) if necessary. I'm reading the info document for vcredist.exe and found no uninstall instruction there. Also I found the advpack.dll included there as follows: Product Name: Microsoft® Windows NT® Operating System Product Version: 4.71.1015.0 I double checked their installation instruction which mentions that this is for Windows 98 too. Is it something wrong?
  9. I've updated to JRE 5.17 without problem. I'm using the http://www.java.com website though.
  10. Just some progress update: I've got FF2 installed. Initial impression is good. Unicode and IME support is perfect. Stress tested it to IPF by opening many many tabs: FIREFOX caused an invalid page fault in module MSVCRT.DLL at 0187:7800d17d. I checked that I've many MSVCRT.DLL on my system, the one in Windows\system\ being at version 6.00.8397.0. Does it supposed to die?
  11. Indeed, you are perfectly right. I only want an editor that supports both Unicode and IME. However, none fits yet. I'll ride on nvu and continue my search on something smaller. Thanks for your info!
  12. At last some good news for you guys, the editor I missed should be nvu. Still testing it though. IME and Unicode is working. One minor point is that it's sort of big, I prefer small editors myself.
  13. Just some progress update on the search: Crimson editor : IME not working though it said supporting Unicode Notepad++ Unicode : Installer said that the Unicode version is not compatible with my Windows 98 Notepad++ ANSI : IME not working... I'm working on jaclaz's suggestions: UniRed : IME not working... According to http://www.alanwood.net/unicode/utilities_....html#globalime , none of these editors are supporting Global IME. Is it still worth trying?
  14. I started encountering difficulty in Opera : 1. IME cannot work under Opera, failed to input Chinese/Japanese 2. Some simplified Chinese charactors are missing No problem at all for IE6. Anyone having such experience please help. Is IME supposed to work under FF2?
  15. Thanks for responding. I tried both and both are good editors. Just that none supports IME or Unicode. I'm about to try Crimson Editor, though I remembered some bad experience before. Need to start the search all over again.
  16. Do try this if you love this game type: http://www.kongregate.com/games/ArifRocks/...female-assassin
  17. If you are interested in free flash games, you can try here: http://www.kongregate.com You can sign up if you want to earn badges, nothing material. Just added some incentive for gaming.
  18. I'm looking for the best editor (freeware) for 98 that has: * IME support * native Unicode support I used one editor before that having a HTML preview tab to allow me reading Unicode HTML pages. But I forgot its name and the software itself. I understood that Unicode support is limited for 98, just wishing for the best.
  19. Really appreciate your contribution... Does it one still have the problem for shutting down Windows? For avoiding this problem, I'm using 77.72 driver.
  20. Does it mean that Opera will not work under safe-mode? I didn't tried yet. Under safe-mode, I doubt my onboard network adapter will work at all...
  21. Is it the one version with anti-phishing as mentioned in FF2 users?
  22. Interesting... why 3 browsers instead of 1?
  23. Unfortunately, no, the JRE 6 update 11 installer does not work. The new release of JRE 5 update 17, however, does still work. Isn't JRE6 not workable under 98SE? http://www.java.com website just upgraded me to JRE 5.17, but not JRE6. Any clue on this?
  24. I'm using 915 + ICH6 motherboard under 98SE. I think that I've achieved USB 2.0 speed with the help of NUSB 3.3 driver. Anyone also have such experience? Just one flaw, I can no longer go to Suspend mode due to the nVidia driver. That's unsolvable?
  25. I've got Flash Player 9.0.151 installed on 98SE. It "works" under both IE6, Opera 9.62 and FF2. However, it fails when some large flash applications (flash games like Caravaneer, Mech Quest) run for a while. When it failed, the flash applications will show large font size. When it failed under Opera 9.62, even the IE6 and Explorer are also affected by missing icons. I found that the Windows itself is out of GDI resources. It didn't free even by closing the FF2 tab running the flash application. They are all free after closing the FF2. I found on the web that Flash Player is having memory leak, am I alone on this? Did anyone having such experience or tried such applications without problem?
