  1. Yup, put the old processor back in, and don't change a single other thing if that fixes the problem, warranty the new processor. if not, then it's a long process of elimination. BTW, that mobo doesn't happen to have an SIS chipset does it? I was too lazy too look it up
  2. seems there should be a way to get the $Docs to copy to the users MyDocuments folder instead of the Documents and Settings folder tho Twould be handy for office settings where everyone needs templates of the same document, and wouldn't have to look beyond the MyDocuments folder
  3. Seems you figured it out all by yourself It's true, the username cannot be the same as the computer name
  4. well, the other good thing is, then the serial can be modified according to consumer needs, without burning a new CD/DVD as well as customise the installation such as what software to install I.E. some workstations won't have license for Office, others don't need Nero, while they probably all can use Adobe reader but anyway, this was about security of a disk. I would suggest only giving a valuble software disk to trustworthy persons If people abuse their priviledge, take it away
  5. I always put my commands and winnt.sif on a floppy so if somebody does get the actual CD, they won't get the batch files or any serial numbers, since that's on my floppy
  6. yeah, so much for the search button. they removed all the stuff he said
  7. I just added a command line to my batch file md "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch" I suppose there could be a %user% or some other variable to put in place of that path, because you have to manually edit the line to what user you want to log in. I put it in the first batch file to run in the [GuiRunOnce] section of my winnt.sif file
  8. Yup, agreed with the RIAA screw thing. I don't mind if the artists make a ton of money, I just think they shouldn't get rich from working for 3 months to record a new album, and then make millions for the next 5 years. Plus, the RIAA gets more power from every "hit" Kinda like organized crime. I'd rather download the stuff and send the actual artist money directly
  9. I think artists would be smart to release all their crap on p2p, and make the money at concerts and such. After all, most people work for a living, and selling CDs isn't really working. Dancing and singing is. Then the true artist would come out of the woodwork, and the fakies like Britney would go away
  10. yes, to install your programs, add a line to your winnt.sif answer file like this [GuiRunOnce] pathtofile:\batchfilename.cmd where batchfilename.cmd is a batch file that you are using to silently install your programs That will load right after windows completes.
  11. I had problems when I tried to run 2 files from cmdlines.txt so I referenced a batch file from cmdlines and had the batch file do the dirty work for me
  12. so I guess Microsoft didn't do such a good job cleaning up Now, if only someone could get me a whistler WINNTBBU
  13. beggar I read all about unattended, and understood about 50% of it, but I managed to do it all myself Maybe reading instructions for a while would help things sink in. Plus a little trial and error is good learning experience
  14. prathapml, that's why I use the .cmd format, because it can be edited Since I use my unattended setup to install on customer computers, I need the flexibility of batch so I can customise the installation according to software needs of the customer. 1 question on it tho, is one method faster installation? batch vs binary?
  15. as in slipstream an internet explorer update? I'd just be happy if I could get CDIMAGE.EXE to work properly on 2000 I've extracted the image, created my $OEM$ folders, etc. but can't create an iso for it I can live with the updates, I'd just like to load some basic programs with unattendend 2000
  16. well, he can talk about cracks as long as it's a** or sidewalk but as far as .cmd to .exe, why would one need to do this? batch files are simple and fast
  17. I scripted my unattended setup to use a floppy. For the user login info on the autologon.reg and user account.cmd, I put a reference to a:\useraccount.cmd in the cmdlines.txt XP setup will always look to the floppy for the winnt.sif file, so I put that file right on the floppy, as well as the rest of the batch files to run the unattended setup right thru the programs installs Another way to do it is to use the CDIMAGE.EXE that is listed on this forum somewhere to create an ISO image file to use as source to burn a cd or dvd I'd write some tutorial on it if there's enough intrest, or I could just post my files for people to analyze
  18. He could just put his win98se drive in primary boot position, and it usually finds the new hardware OK. Clean install is better, but maybe he doesn't know how
  19. I've gotta scratch my head on that one. I did it a long time ago in school, but I really forget how. We had some tool that created a file, and from the dos prompt it was a command like d:\setup /l [path to answer file] to the best my old memory can remember. The tools are on the win95 cd to do it, but blasted if I have a win95 cd to browse looking for those tools oh, and it isn't totally unattended either, you still had to manually enter the serial and a few other things Win98 is much better if you gotta stay with the older OS
  20. I'd say try another keyboard, I'd even loan one, but he's prolly miles away
  21. well, I don't use samsung for hard drives
  22. OK, let me clarify I HAVE sold systems to people on the premise that raid is faster. Sorry, I was disappointed in the performance, not worth the money As far as the boot performance, I was talking about the 3 seconds it takes to load the raid setup on cold boot, as it seems to take this time to initialize the raid setup no matter what brand it is. So, guess it's all a matter of preference. So I like redheads and I use the Maxtor ATA133 so yeah, it's gonna beat the WD because those are only ATA100 guess I'm an old fogy
  23. I use a floppy disk for my winnt.sif and batch files put all the info on your batch file, and echo out any lines that you don't want installed plus, you can change serial numbers in the winnt.sif files, as well as user and workgroup names. and it's not that hard to do either B)
  24. just seems there should be an easier way Good reason to stay with parallel ATA in my opinion that, and I haven't seen real speed benefits that outweight the risks involved with raid #1 while it's fine for people who back up their data, most homeowners wait until it's too late, and it's **** hard to retrieve data on a raid setup where a drive physically fails #2 the extra bootup time for the raid systems is annoying, not to mention it takes system resourses for the most common raid systems. Now the real scsi cards are better than the promise controllers in this respect
  25. in my batch file, I use the Adobe reader switch like this start /wait %systemdrive%\install\Apps\AdobeReader6\AdbeRdr60_enu_full.exe -p"-s /v\"/qn\"" you will need to modify any path or file name to fit your filename
