asrock k8nf6g-vsta + Athlon 64 3300+ Blue Screen Error
joe43wv replied to ideas's topic in Hardware Hangout
If you get this screen on just one certain game your playing, try going to the game's website and see if they have a patch to fix it. If it's doing it to every game then I say go with nitroshift's route. -
How to do a Diagnostic on a WD SATA HDD ?
joe43wv replied to BPoller's topic in Hard Drive and Removable Media
Sounds to me like your hard drive is about to go down the drain. You only have limited time, get the info. you want off the drive immediately, and if it is still under warrenty call WD. The longer you wait, and the longer the drive sits there running the closer it will come to the point of no return, meaning no chance of file or document recovery. -
1054: Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name...

Sounds to me like it could be a NIC card issue, a driver issue or hardware malfunction. Try starting there to check. -

Athlon 64 3300+ vs Sempron 2800+ Both Socket 754
joe43wv replied to ideas's topic in Hardware Hangout
I'd go with the Athlon, it's a better quality CPU and faster speed. Sempron is used for light weight work, but when you have options like this I say go with Athlon and you won't be sorry. -
I know what you mean, it happens to all of us.

Ya it's possible. I've just found it easier to use serial. Try using a crossover cable to connect through the console port.
-
Have you tried running the updates for Office 2003? If not try that and see what happens.
-
The easiest way to connect to it is through the serial port if availble. If it is then you can run hyperterminal through the serial port and get it up and running.

Difference between Cat-3 and Cat-5e
joe43wv replied to Brando569's topic in Networks and the Internet
CAT 3 is classed as telephone wire and CAT 5 is obvious network. The difference is the twist. The more twists you have the faster it runs, so that is why CAT 5 runs at higher speeds is due to the twisting of the wires inside the cable. -

Saving files or folders when Vista won't boot . . . .
joe43wv replied to sam13484's topic in Windows Vista
Do you have any way of hooking the laptop drive to another PC and pulling the info? I've purchased a SATA/IDE to USB adapter and it'll read laptop drives as well. Their fairly cheap and well worth the money. -
Make an ISO with the folders
joe43wv replied to nikocronaldo's topic in Unattended Windows Vista/Server 2008
Sorry jaclaz, I'm not, but for what niko is wanting to do the free ver. should do just fine. The only thing is the free ver. has a size limit of a couple of hundred MB. -
Under device manager, right click your NIC card and click properties. There you'll see install or update driver, click that and run through the wizard. Tell it that you'll install the driver manually and point it to look at the folder you have the drivers residing at.

Make an ISO with the folders
joe43wv replied to nikocronaldo's topic in Unattended Windows Vista/Server 2008
You can download an app. called MagicISO. There you can drag and drop files that you want to use to create an ISO image and save it from there. Try it and if you have any problems just let me know. -
dice.com does nothing but IT jobs. yahoo jobs monster.com is pretty good. You can upload your resume online and it no time get a response.

When recovering data I use RecoverSoft Data Rescue PC V2.0. It's a free download from the website. http://www.recoversoft.com/download.htm The only thing is the scanner part is free. If you want to recover anything you have to purchase a license. The free scanner works great, it can scan for folders or or by sectors. It even has a preview feature so you can view word docs. etc. before having to purchase the software. I highly recommend it, easy and works great!

Well Octopuss I sure hope you have better luck with it than I did. Maybe I just had the luck of the draw and got 3 bad ones back, to back, to back.

I seen online you can order a free trial ver. of Windows Home Server, just pay shipping and handling. If you want to go that route try that, that way you'll know if the new ver. will work for you, if not I say go for Windows 2000 server.

I checked with AntiVir and AVG andI thought that they no longer supported Win 98 but to verify I checked anyway and they do not, although Avast does so I'll check in on that one and try it out. The next thing is finding a spam blocking utility to run in outlook as well. Any suggestions for such an app for 98? Thanks for the the suggestions.

I say stay away from HP Color Laserjet 2605 at all costs. Where I work we bought three of them at once and within in a couple of months all three of them had to be sent out for repair work. Although I think HP just recently discotinued that model. When I say recently as recent as the last two weeks. So some sellers may still have some sitting on the shelves and as far as I'm concerned that's where they should stay. I haven't worked much with this brand but I was talking to a tech and he said Ricoh is a good brand to go with. Their cheaper than the competition and work great.

Have you tried using a 3rd party vendor like Nero or Roxio? If not try those, if you don't have those apps already installed I think you can download a free trial to see if that fixes your problem.

I was working on a customer's system last night and he wanted a new anti-virus / spamblocker the only thing is he's running Win 98. He purchased Norton and of course it didn't work. He's running a Dell w/ a P3 750 MHz CPU and 128 RAM. I want to know if you all know any AV that will run on 98 and a good spamblocker, preferably a free home ver. if possible.
