  1. why not add a nice solid state drive in addition to the velociraptors? use the SSD as you main drive and the raided raptors as your storage. im kind of scared to know what this going to cost, im going to guess around $6,000-$7,0000
  2. very true, i wish i coud remember what i saw it in
  3. i did have it on and i read somewhere that comcast is actually going to do a complete 180 and actually support bit torrent (not throttling DL speeds)
  4. it doesnt seem to be the router, im directly connected to the modem and it still took about 5-6 seconds to load this page, it usually takes a lot less time and the torrent speeds are still crappy. *edit* maybe it was the router, after I made this post it seemed to load pages like normal, even though two torrents were downloading (still only about 15kB/sec), can anyone recommend a good router to avoid this? I had the same problems with my WRT54G and still when i flashed it with thibor.
  5. oh yea completely forgot about that, see i told you i forgot everything
  6. i have comcast and i use the encryption function in utorrent, i had a wrt54g but i broke it earlier in the year somehow so i just got this one off of ebay for cheap, i was kinda thinking about getting a new one but i have a lot of other stuff to pay for first.
  7. I dont have a serial cable available to me, and I dont really want to go out and buy one just so I can make sure this works. It's not possible to do it via the ethernet jack?
  8. I have an old IBM 2210-24E rackmount router that I got from a friend a few years ago and I never did anything with it except mess around with it when I got it, its been sitting in my closet for awhile and I want to make sure it works before I sell it. The problem is that I dont remember anything about how to configure/telnet into them, I took a cisco class in HS about 4 years ago but I forget everything from it. Right now I have it connected to one of my ethernet ports via a Cat-5e cable, I dont know what its ip address or anything is, the only thing I remember is you have to greet the router (type "helo")
  9. I disabled UPnP in uTorrent but didnt see a section for disabling UPnP in the router config, only spaces to make your own listings (it was a button labeled "UPnP" under port forwarding). I didnt check to see how slow the connection was when I was directly connected and running uTorrent though, I should probably check that out. any suggestions for a good wired router? I have no need for Wi-Fi.
  10. yea utorrent is downloading stuff anywhere from 1 to 6 torrents, the number of torrents doesnt seem to make a difference. the torrents are going unusually slow the most i think ive ever gotten was around 60-70 kB/sec, but then again I tried directly connecting to the modem and the speeds were the same. I guess theyre just crappy torrents even though some of them have 20 or so seeds and sometimes 260 peers.
  11. whenever I have uTorrent open it slows down my 5mbps cable connection to a crawl and its really annoying. I've read stuff on their wiki and tried all of the suggestions, such as limiting global connections to 200 (since my router, a linksys BEFSR41, was on their list of problem causing hardware) limiting the upload speed, etc... I've patched my tcpip.sys, turned UPnP off in both uTorrent and the router, limited it to one download at a time and nothing seems to help. anyone have suggestions for this because it slows down my father's computer also.
  12. what is the physical difference between Cat-3 and Cat-5e wires? Why can cat-3 only support 16mbps while cat-5e can support 1gbps?
  13. turns out i just fried the wd800jb i was going to put in my xbox, i accidentally touched two of the molex connectors together while the pc was on and it arced then my pc shut off i was like "please dont tell me that i just killed my computer!" luckily all was well, except for the hdd. it was only $20 from a friend, but still it sucks....
  14. About 5 days ago this harddrive (which is out of my xbox) decided to not work anymore, which was odd considering it was a refurbished xbox which i had just gotten this chirstmas. I attempted to fix it by various means, and im attempting to put an 80gb drive in there but stuff doesnt want to go my way. XBOXHDM wont work with SATA cd drives (which is the only drive i have) so i cant create the partitions, Xebian (Debian w/FATX support) wont boot and the kernel keeps panicking, i cant patch the kernel in my kubuntu installation so it can support fatx because i dont know the process when using patch.gz files as opposed to bz2 patches, for some reason my computer doesnt want to boot with 2 HDDs on the primary PATA connector (only have one), but yet it will boot fine with one or the other connected. all of this enraged me and i had to let out my anger (with a hammer ) and this is the end result:
  15. according to a paper i found from yale one a handful of universities have complete coverage, but then again that paper was from 03-04
  16. thanks, that shouldnt be that hard since I work for the department that manages ResNet
  17. I was just wondering if anyone knew where to get figures about how many colleges and universities in the USA have deployed wireless access points on their campus, more sop in the dormitories and apartments. I'm doing a proposal paper on getting wireless access points in the dorms here at Rutgers University and these figures would help me out greatly. Thanks In Advance Brandon
  18. yep im going from the nic to the lan port2, i posted this over on the ubuntu forums since i figured 100,000 linux geeks would be able to help me better then 100,000 microsoft geeks
  19. ok so ive successfully de-bricked the router but im having problems sending the firmware over. i cant get a connection going between the router and my computer. i have two interfaces on my computer and im a little confused on how to connect them correctly. im fairly adept at using linux, my installation is kubuntu 7.11, i issued the command /sbin/ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.0.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 and that went as planned. if i connect one from the pc to the drop box (i live in a university dorm) tftp will send packets, if i make the connection between the router and the pc tftp wont send packets because it says that it cant access the network. if i connect eth0 to the dropbox (from the pc) and eth1 to the router (from the pc) tftp will send the packets but i wont get any acks. if i connect eth0 to the router and then connect the wan port to the dropbox, tftp will send packets but i wont get any acks. ive tried to configure them manually but nothing seems to work. ifup/down keeps saying that it doesnt know what eth0 and eth1 are (Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.), knetworkmanager says eth0 (it says its name is eth0:avahi, same thing for eth1, but yet only loopback is defined in the interfaces file) has my universities IP address but no subnet mask and in kinfocenter eth0 shows a private address (168.254.7.2) and eth1 will pop up sometimes with another private address. im at a loss right now.... *edit* i just tried it again and all seemed to go well at first. i opened up kinfocenter and saw that i had a working ip again (i could connect to the internet) so i issued /sbin/ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.1.4 netmask 255.255.255.0 and then checked kinfocenter again. eth0 was listed with the working ip address and eth0:1 was listed with 192.168.1.4. so i disconnected from the dropbox and connected to the router and tried to send it..... nothing, connection timed out. i checked kinfocenter and everything was changed, eth0 and eth0:1 were no longer listed instead i had eth0:avahi with an ip of 168.254.7.2 and a subnet of 255.255.0.0 ! now im completely baffled.
  20. im flashing from thibor to tomato v1.17 and what do you mean buy full reset? i held the reset button for 30 seconds and that didnt seem to do much *edit* i just tried flashing from thibor to the linksys firmware and it still said the same thing
  21. when i try to upgrade it (click the upgrade button) it says the connection was reset by the server but if i hit the back button it tries to upload it and the first time i did it, it said the connection timed out and the upgrade failed. i tried it again but didnt have time to watch it since i had to come here to work.
  22. the router is a few years old, currently i have a web interface and no internet. everytime i try to change settings (save settings, upgrade firmware [i havent tried this yet but im assuming it will be the same], restore config files, etc...) it says the connection was reset (also when it tried to use the apply.cgi script it just displays a blank screen instead of "changes saved"), although i can access the web interface pages. ill try and upgrade the firmware and see if it does the same thing.
