  1. You can check if it really did install properly by looking at KB967715.log in your WINDOWS folder. Did you reboot? And have you visited Windows Update and rescanned since this update was installed manually?
  2. Well I'm not going to reprise the SSD -v- HDD argument, because that's already taken care of in the SSD, the end of HDD topic, but I'm actually on the side of HDDs for the time being. However, continuing from what I said then, if you have a 3:1, 4:1 (or more) ratio of performance for SSDs between the fastest SSD and the slowest SSD, then comparisons are essentially meaningless unless you first specify which SSD you are talking about. For example, Samsung's SSDs are no quicker at reading (within 1% or 2%) than the 1TB SpinPoint HDD and they are actually slower at writing than the SpinPoint (by about 8% or 9%). The point is, that the VelociRaptors are no longer way out in front whatever you compare them with. They may be only about 12% faster than a Samsung 1TB SpinPoint on reading; but they are way, way behind the Seagate Cheetah 15K.6. For writing, the VelociRaptor may be about 20% or so faster than the SpinPoint, but again, are way, way behind the Cheetah. So, why a VelociRaptor in particular? HDD design has moved on, since they came out. Like eveything else, it's also a question of how much money you want to spend, and on this dream computer there's already $420 just for the RAM .
  3. Actually, that's not the date of the patch, it's the date of the webpage. (And it's "2/26/2009" not 2/24...) Also, same date, same file.... (The file on the Server is dated Fri, 20 Jun 2003) You could also try checking the (dated) Digital Signature.... No third-party hash program needed. I reported this, two days ago, in the HFSLIP forum... (in this Topic). .
  4. Not forgetting, of course, those helpful naming suggestions for the network name: "Kitchen Computer" or "Mary's Computer". They sound pretty enterprisey, too. Mind you, if you saw what some users did with their computers, primary colours from the Early Learning Centre just about pitches it at the right level for them.... .
  5. In a word -- yes. With a single 4850 1gb and an AMD 6000+, I reckon the Corsair CMPSU-450VX is a good (80 Plus rated) power supply that can easily power that system. I think Gigabyte are estimating way more than is needed, to allow for cheap inefficient PSUs. 80 PLUS verification report (Single page PDF file) can be downloaded from the CMPSU-450VX link at:http://www.80plus.org/manu/psu/psu_detail....d=25&type=2 .
  6. Microsoft have reinstated the download for: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Network Install for IT Professionals (a.k.a. W2KSP4_EN.EXE) Download page: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...10-297bd6ca33a0 And the download link works! The download page states: "Date Published: 2/26/2009", but ignore that, because the file is just the same as before. W2KSP4_EN.EXE is actually dated Fri, 20 Jun 2003. .
  7. Thanks puntoMX. That's what I thought -- it seems that Asus in particular has messed around a bit too much with these drivers. As for Raptors, they have nowhere near the speed advantage that they once had. On read (but not write) speed thay are outclassed by about 50% of SSDs.
  8. I get the same result as okram98pive. However, for strmdll.dll (4.1.0.3936), I have a date of 21-August-2006, (not 24-August, as given by okram98pive) but maybe that was just a typo. The previous version of strmdll.dll (4.1.0.3936) comes from KB925398 and is almost two years older. The dates are right, because that's a 2006 update (KB925398=MS06-078). Makes no difference whether you had v1 or v2 of that update. When KB925398-v2 was released, in 2007, strmdll.dll did not change from v1 to v2. .
  9. I've seen some reports that the Asus drivers for the Asus HD 4850 are unstable and that other drivers should be used. Anyone have any info on this?
  10. I may be missing the point, but isn't that exactly what a proxy server does? At the home user level, parental control software also does this - but mostly tends to block rather than re-map domains.
  11. Inverting a matrix used to be homework, way back when I was in college.
  12. No, I really did mean email. It's not a typo. For the reasons why, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telecommunica..._data_retention Or more simply, see the BBC News item UK e-mail law 'attack on rights' at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7819230.stm That is, details of roughly 3 Billion emails per day, or roughly 1 Trillion emails per year. Also,
  13. This is only true if you apply the SP3 to an existing installation. It is not true if you buy an XP-SP3 CD. .

    Windows Updates

Further information: KB967715 is the same update as KB953252. It's just that KB953252 was never offered on Automatic Updates, but now KB967715 is. Source: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/...ory/967940.mspx.
  15. If ever there was a misleading Topic title then this is it! Tuesday's downtime wasn't a hack, it was a server outage - and it made the ISC SANS diary and BBC News. or, alternatively, in Europe, if you want security, don't use email! .
  16. As far as I know you can only put a NetGear DG834 into debug mode by using the web interface. It's not like a LinkSys, where you can do this by shorting two pins on the chip while booting up. If the web interface on a NetGear is down, as happens if it is bricked, then the only other way in (that I know of) is by building a serial cable/adapter and attaching that to the motherboard.
  17. OK thankyou. What made me ask about lost posts, is that the total post count (bottom of the front page) is exactly the same as it was over 7 hours ago.
  18. Just over 6 hours ago I posted about the difficulties I experienced, with this board, including IPS Driver Errors and mysql errors (with details). That post has now been lost. Shortly after I posted, the board crashed and after that it was put into maintenance mode. How many other posts were lost? Or, to put it a different way, what time did you go back to, when the board was brought back up again? .
  19. I guess I was a bit too brief. I haven't actually set up a VM and run the experiment exactly as you asked BrainwreckedTech to do. What I have done is take a live system with all other patches installed and then installed KB954600. The results of my run are as I have reported. All I was trying to say is that, as and when someone actually carries out the experiment I think that is what they will get, because that is what I already have. I'm near enough to what you asked that the results should be identical. As already reported by BrainwreckedTech, WMP9 does not completely replace WMP6, so the results are messy. We have WMP9 using/updating logagent.exe in system32, but WMP6 using/updating a different version of the file (same name) in Program Files/Windows Media Player. .
  20. Yes, that "generic_foo" folder structure is a little different, isn't it. I think I can tell you what the answer to the rest is, too: Forget about netlogon.dll -- it's the same as Update Rollup 1; Forget about msv1_0.dll -- it's also the same as Update Rollup 1; logagent.exe won't be put in system32, because version 9 should be there, but it will be put in the Program Files/... folder; strmdll.dll will be put in system32. .
  21. You are probably missing the driver that the notebook manufacturer provides to activate the Fn button. What is your notebook? .
  22. That subnet mask would only be faulty if you had a network. A subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 means that the routing prefix is all 32 bits or in other words your IP address is allowed to be anything. .
  23. Works on Windows 2000 too, but I've only carried out limited testing so far.
  24. Is this a USB or a PS/2 mouse? Is the appropriate mouse support enabled in the BIOS?
  25. Nice unit of Pascal Delphi code, Glenn9999. There are a number of free utilities available to list the installed updates, of which I think the best is probably Nir Sofer's WinUpdatesList (Description and download link are on: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wul.html). However, I've never seen a utility to list the patches by file before. Now there's a solution to answer questions like: "How did we manage to get file XXX updated?" which would otherwise mean working your way through the lower pane of WinUpdatesList, or trawling through the registry manually. Thanks. .
