  1. Hi allen2! God you are too quick for me.....lol Thanks for that..I will leave the new thread open to see what transpires....now there is a word for the day... Going to read now... Thanks again! bookie32
  2. Hi folks Thought it prudent to start a new thread because the topic is different from my error in my last thread.... I am looking for those of you who have tried the new "Windows Server Backup" function and really know for certain how it works. I have a .wim of my basic install and updates. My setup is as below: 120GB ssd drive Windows (installation) 60GB and Ubuntu 10.04lts on the other 60GB 1TB WD Black 64mb cache Linux Swab and Home !TB WD Black 64mb cache This is an extended drive divided up into Program Me (user) and Vmware 2TB WD Green 64mb cache This is a extra space for all my files from linux 2TB WD Green 64mb cache This has most customer files MDT When I created the .wim of my ssd I just took the Windows C: partition but will probably look at backing up the Ubuntu installation as well now..... I didn't create a wim of my "program files" and "user" files and that is something I need to look at and wonder about the best options for that. I haven't had to reinstate my C: drive from the .wim and am not sure if the links to the "program files" and "users" will be intact? If they are - then how does the "Windows Server Backup" function differ from that.....if it does...lol As hard drives become larger and larger - so does the prospect of doing backups , so it is important to make the right decisions before it is too late. Of course - no backup is fool proof we are at the mercy of the technology we use and that is doesn't let us down too often...I hope Ultimately it would be nice to back up everything and I suppose a virtual server would be the best option. Maybe some feedback and links to relevant material would be nice. Any questions - plese ask! Thanks! bookie32
  3. Hi Tripredacus No problems...Yes , at this stage I ran several commands and maybe it was the StartRep.exe that did the work.... I didn't know about that before and it is a useful tool. I have been reading up on the "Windows Server Backup" function and will probably give it a try as another safety net. It would be nice to be certain that reinstating from a back up would save the links between my 120ssd drive and the program files and user accounts on another. At the moment I have the follwing setup: 120GBssd Windows (installation) 60GB and Ubuntu 10.04lts on the other 60GB 1TB WD Black 64mb cache Linux Swap and Home 1TB WD Black 64mb cache This is an extended drive divided up into Program Me (user) and Vmware 2TB WD Green 64mb cache This is a extra space for all my files from linux 2TB WD Green 64mb cache This has most customer files MDT Doing a back up of that lot is not really an option at the moment, but I try to keep an eye on things. Eventually I will add a virtual server to back up everything. bookie32
  4. Hi Tripredacus! Sorry missed this post.... Thanks for the info... booke32
  5. Hi again! Little update here... I was starting to tear out more of the little hair that I have left when I thought in for a penny in for a pound. I backed up the BCD and then rebuilt it and then when running repair I could see the installation. I cd to the recovery directory on the dvd and then ran StartRep.exe. Well, it didn't rung long and said nothing to fix so I restarted but had the same error....?!! Since fixing the BCD i hadn't updated my grub2 and so it was still giving me the same above error... I ran the repair cd again this time using bootrec to fix mbr and boot and low and behold on boot there was my server install again. chkdsk ran on all my disks and then started the server as usual. I don’t like the bootloader for Windows, so I updated my grub and now I am getting my usual boot menu from Linux and Windows seems OK…. Right just been looking through my settings and it says Windows Server Backup isn't installed but can be.....must have had my eyes closed to have missed this one.... What is the difference between the Windows Server Backup function and a .wim file? Might have asked this before..... my basic Windows Server installation is on the 120 ssd drive with Ubuntu and I have moved the page file to another drive and my user account and programs reside on another drive. Question: If I create a .wim file of the C:drive now and then will that .wim file if reinstated know that my programs and user account are on another drive? Or does the Windows Server Backup work in some other mysterious way which is better....? bookie32 BTW I also checked the update record and the so called helpful update KB2533552 was installed ages ago, so I am stumped as to why I had the error code?
  6. Hi again! Been a bit busy...but I have looked at the workaround, but that doesn't work because there is no pending.xml file to load. I have checked in linux and sure enough it isn't there. I tried this from a windows server Enterprise r2 cd and pointed to the usb with the script.vbs on it , but like I said there is no "pending.xml" to be found. I haven't had time to do a VMware install to test your theory, but will get onto that. As you can probably remember I have installed windows server enterprise r2 on the 120GB drive, but also have Ubuntu LTS (long term support) on the rest of the drive and it is the grub2 I am using to bring up my start menu and then choose Windows Server from the start menu. What worries me is even when I choose Windows Server from the menu and then F8 it still throws up the error, so I can't even get to repair that way and hence the reason for running it from repair cd. Can one reinstall Windows Server with original settings intact? bookie32 PS Just noticed that sp1 has been installed for a while. I checked one of my wim files that I created after installing everything and that already has the sp1, so I don't unstand the error code?! Even the repair cd finds the installation but can't tell me how big it is?
  7. Hi Mate! Thanks a lot for your time and effort....I will get to that as soon as I have a mo and report back here when I have sorted it or need more help.... Thanks again! bookie32
  8. Hi allen2! No probs...grateful for the help! bookie32
  9. Hi guys! allen2 Would you lie to give a little more info.... My biggest problem is I haven't backed up MDT 2010 and all the settings I can go in and backup files with Linux, but I laid down so much work and to have to reinstall is not nice.... If I have understood things right - then windows server haven't a usual way of turning back the clock because of problems?! All I have is the wim file I created when everything was installed and that I can reinstate....is there a better way so I can avoid heart attacks.... bookie32
  10. Hi guys! I have had a dualboot scenario a while now with Windos Server 2008r2 and Ubuntu, but today I received the folloing code 0xc0000034 and I have tried running a repair cd to see if that will fix it....nada. Can't even get into safety mode..... I know there is a fix for this problem, but how can I install it when the computer wont boot? Check here How can I fix this without a reinstall...... bookie32
  11. Hi again Like I said I have tried lots of differn't solutions (if they were actually solutions) I got so fed up yesterday with this problem that I re-installed Windows 7 from a wim file and then there was no problem....can't think what caused the hickup, but I now have Office 2010 working fine. My solution was a bit more time consuming, but in the end it is "swings" and "rounderbouts"..... I will call this solved even if it begs the question "what was the problem?" Thanks anyway! bookie32
  12. Hi again! This is going from bad to worse....my other half asked me to update to the Office 2010 she bought, so I removed 2007 and installed the 2010 version. Problem is now when I try to open anything "the operative system hasn't been configured to run the program" ?! I have tried removing and reinstalling....nada. I have tried a "fixit" solution from Microsoft...nada.I have tried to remove all files, but that is a next to impossible task.... How am I to install Office 2010? Any takers...... bookie32
  13. Hi folks I have Office 2007 with outlook etc and I have had previous accounts setup in outlook, but now I want to reset it as if I am using it for the first time.... I have followed the advice of tons of differen't solutions, of which, I haven't found any that work...?! Can anyone give me some help here and tell me how to reset Outlook as if I was the first one creating an account? Thanks bookie32
  14. Hi guys! Thanks so much for your replies....will du...thought I was going crazy.... . bookie32
  15. Hi again! Well, I guess that this is a no no...so many are having the same problem..... bookie32
  16. Hi again! This is crazy... 1. I downloaded IE 9 from here which is older than the original installed version and smaller 35,2mb. I then removed the installed version and rebooted. After reboot I installed the older version and rebooted. I then checked update and YES!! the recommended update was still there after a search?! 2. I then removed the older version and rebooted and then used windows update to install the version lurking and rebooted....After reboot there was still a recommended update after a search......?! What is this crap?! bookie32
  17. Hi guys The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit I am trying to update a laptop and have a problem with IE 9 64bit.. I have already installed IE 9 as an update and both 64bit and 32bit are working OK. BUT I am getting IE 9 64bit as recommended download? The file is 36,7mb and if I run install it comes up with the above error. Why is the computer detecting an update when it is already installed and working? Of course I don't need to install the update, but it shouldn't be lurking in the first place.... Is there a fix for this problem? bookie32
  18. Hi guys Thanks for coming by... Tripredacus No it wasn''t ever part of a domain.. cyberpyr8 Well, on the business computer I had a password....dont't know why...lol. I removed that and rebooted and then for some reason I could access my main computer?! Anyway, it seems to be OK at the moment, but I will keep an eye on it and see what happens.. Thanks again for your time! bookie32
  19. Hi guys! I don't understand the problem I am having?!! I have several Windows 7 computers on the same home network, but can't access one from the other. I have my main computer and my business computer. On the main computer I can get access and share files with the business computer. On the business computer I can't get access to the main computer and it asks for a password to the domain it is on?! Why should the business computer think that the main computer is part of a domain? Both are on the same network! A window pops up for the user name, password to a domain I have but the computer in question isn't a part of it?. In the network window it shows the main computer as part of home network. It is like a contradiction in terms..... Has anyone got any ideas on this, please! bookie32
  20. Hi Mate! Thanks for getting back to me... Major problems to me...one of my computers gave up today and has caused me a few more headaches... I didn't get any errors when capturing, but will have a look... Thanks for the links.... bookie32
  21. Hi again Little update... I deployed my wim with one error and that image I am adding here for someone to comment on? I need to add some info to my Deployment TS because after deployment I was logged in as Administrator and then after reboot my account showed up I also have checked my drive and found that I have a BDEDrive of 300mb's which is after my "C" drive? I did not think about the system drive when capturing C: so perhaps someone could explain that to me... I do understand that I need to add some info to setup partitioning etc in the unattend file...if someone can help me with that? So, the deployment was successful, but a little work needs to be done to clean up the deployment a little... bookie32
  22. Hi mate! Yes we have another sorted problem... Those that follow the ramblings of this old fart can see here that Tripredacus has been helping me with this problem and we have a workaround that gets us going... Thanks again mate! Will post later when I have deployed to my main computer... bookie32
  23. Hi mate! No worries... I diactivated the media service as stated in a previous post and then changed the Unattend settings to "other" and that did the trick OK! now I need to test the wim on a different computer and we are starting to get somewhere.....YES! Nice find mate! Thanks a bunch I have logged back into the computer after syspreping it and all my programs are working fine.... Now to deploy the wim to my main computer and get back to some real work....lol bookie32
  24. Hi again! OK the only settings under that are Home, Work, and other, so I have set it to other to try that.... bookie32
  25. Hi mate! OK as soon as I get a mo I will try that....and get back to you. Thanks! bookie32
