  1. I believe it will work until March-ish time next year and no, it wont work on RTM Regards Nath
  2. Hi there Have you looked using klasika's suggestion here: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=82878# although i always thought that the activation process itself was not in VLK software at all - thus meaning that even changing the registry / etc to alter it into a "retail" version would be pointless as the actual files etc would still be missing... I don't believe there is any legal way here unfortunately. Regards Nath
  3. yianniv hehe you just beat me to it. By far, the cheapest way - along with the suggestion of not giving admin rights to users who aren't admins EDIT: forgot to mention thats how i do it hehe Cheers Nath
  4. External CD drive might be cheaper than finding the right replacement drive - form factor does change with slimline CD-ROM / optical drives I believe. But if its still under warranty, call Dell, and even if its not, they might be able to suggest the replacement. You might be able to find a replacement drive yourself however by looking up the model on the web etc. There are some alternative methods but replacing the optical drive or getting a external one that is bootable is probably your best bet. PS The linux on a USB pen is a option indeed if the laptop will boot from it. Cheers Nath
  5. And also, have a look at this: http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/cfd.exe.html Cheers Nath
  6. Hi pontypool [are you from there btw? ] If you're new to this stuff then your best bet is to follow the guides and give AutoImage a try [its a GUI of sorts] combined with nlite [component removal], RyanVM's hotfix pack [for the updates] and BTS's DriverPacks [for drivers strangely enough ] Start off with just some of that at a time and you'll be making custom CDs for yourself in no time.... ....just remember distributing them is illegal Cheers Nath
  7. I think you will find that it isn't legal to use them. Somewhere in all the licensing and EULAs you'll find that it forbids the distribution of the software and combine that with the fact that the software has been modified, it is most definately not legal. Thats why with many of the member's projects on this forum, you have to use your own XP CD or installation as a base for the project as they can't provide the files of XP with the project.... Do a google on PEBuilder and try it as an example of what I mean. In short.... the distribution of a modified XP media source is illegal [unless you have the license to do so like Royalty OEMs do] - simple as that really Right, and I can understand that. There are however threads on MSFN relating to how to make a OEM CD/build from your Dell Recovery CD/partition. Sorry I don't have them to hand but you should be able to search and find them... or perhaps another kind member can post a link [i would look for you but I need to get on with some work hehe] Regards [and welcome to MSFN btw] Nath
  8. ...plus, slipstreamed "ready made" XP distributions are illegal i.e. you can happily make your own for your own use, but it is illegal to distribute it. Save yourself the hassle and make your own with your own legal media CD and the plentiful guides found on here [http://unattended.msfn.org/] and/or using the other many member projects found on here. If done properly and if the programs you install dont "mess" around with XP too much, you should have much better success Good luck Regards Nath.
  9. Even though you say the permissions are fine, have you checked both the NTFS and the share permissions? My other thought is are you using Server 2003 R2 by any chance on the file server? and if so, has someone been trying out the file extention restrictions? Cheers Nath
  10. It will be resolved in the next release of nlite I believe. My post is only really valid for corporate lans where you deploy to many computers using RIS - you can of course use the same process should you wish [i.e. edit the nlite.sif file before creating the iso of the build and burning it] You can also remove the entries in runonce part of the registry from the .default registry area I believe [use caution here - only do this if you know what you are doing] EDIT: He didnt mean search for Mr Search... just to use the search facility of the forum before starting threads as it has already been asked Regards Nath.
  11. Sorry to those that sent me a PM or wanted me to explain.... been a bit busy on other things.... ZcWorld - if you read the other posts, you'd see why I/we were editing the nlite.inf file Thats not much good on a RIS install... thus the reason why I've editing the nlite.inf file on the RIS server image but good to know its sorted in the upcoming version... So for now, if you aren't using this on a RIS image, then the above is likely fine - whereas if you are using a RIS image and deploying to multiple machines, edit the nlite.inf file in the i386 directory of your RIS build and removing the entries like i mention in my previous post [you may not get all your tweaks but its still preferable to error messages for the users hehe ] Cheers Nath.
  12. The key that you have discovered is probably [and im not sure of the correct term] a factory key, in that you acn only use it within factory settings of sysprep mode... or someother wonderful reasoning, but the short of it is that most royalty oem's [OEMs such as HP, Toshiba, etc etc] use these methods where they can use a single key in a image. Thus thats why its different to whats printed on the sticky COA on the bottom of your laptop. As to why it wont accept it, it could be similar reasons in that the key is only acceptable with a Royalty oem distribution - in the same way that you can only use a volume key on a volume media install of XP. Hope this quick rambling made sense hehe Regards Nath
  13. I tried it without anything other than the removal of components, and I still got it.... So I looked at the nlite.inf file on the computer, and sure enough at the bottom of the inf file there is two inf files being called. Does anyone know what the nlite.inf file is actually for? In a environment like I have, I don't need to alot of those things as we use roaming profiles and it seemed to me that this file is causing it to "mess up" the log on so that the roaming profile doesn't come into effect.... which is not good hehe [or it could be that the machine hasn't recieved the group policies yet after the initial boot. The .inf files being called are a definate no no at any rate for me, and probably everywhere else that users non-administrator users within a domain. I'm going to try and install the client again after changing the nlite.inf in the RIS image [or in the case of a disc image, you could change it before creating a iso and burning it]. The two lines I have are as follows: HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_07",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nlite.inf,nLiteReg" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_08",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nlite.inf,S" EDIT: Success!!! I ended up removing all of the last section i.e.: HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_01",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,DelNodeRunDLL32 ""%10%\eHome""" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_02",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,DelNodeRunDLL32 ""%10%\Connection Wizard""" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_03",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,DelNodeRunDLL32 ""%11%\Inetsrv""" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_04",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,DelNodeRunDLL32 ""%10%\Help\Tours""" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_05",0x00020000,"cmd.exe /c md ""%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp""" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_06",0x00020000,"cmd.exe /C move /Y ""%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetub.dll"" ""%SystemRoot%\System32\syssetup.dll""" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_07",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nlite.inf,nLiteReg" HKU,".Default\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce","nlpo_08",0x00020000,"rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nlite.inf,S" As a result of this I get no Advanced INF errors on any user that hasn't admin rights. I'm not sure of the knock on effect if you use tweeks but everything is pretty much controlled by Group Policies so it isn't a issue. The only thing i really fail to understand with all this is that if you are not using any of the tweaks [or other sections in nlite] except for removing components, why does this file apply a few tweeks in it? Confusing stuff indeed. Nath.
  14. Does it record a log at all? I'd have thought that a vital part of any online multiplayer setup. Maybe you could find that as if its easy to read, you could find the time and date of what happened perhaps. Nath.
  15. Ahhh so if we dont use any of the tweaks.... it might solve the problem perhaps? I assume that this process has been changed from earlier versions, but a .inf file wouldn't be allowed to run on a limited user [with certain exceptions] I'll try leaving out the tweaks section and see what that does, although I haven't found any references to nlite.inf in Run / RunOnce on HKLM or .default etc... Cheers Nath.
  16. They aren't in my RunOnce entries in the registry of windows... at least, if they are then they are invisible lol Something else is calling them but my skills aren't so hot compared to other people unfortunately, so I can't find whats causing them. I haven't seen them before using this version of nlite [and the versions of BTS that I'm using] so I can only guess that its something to do with nlite. Note sure what exactly, and so long as they don't cause errors no matter who logs in, then they are no big problem. Two days of confusion makes me tired lol Nath
  17. I get a similar error which says: Advanced INF: Access Denied but can't find anything obvious that relates to it :S I use BTS's DriverPacks and RogueSpears AutoImage so its hard to troubleshoot which is causing the problem AutoImage doesn't seem to be the problem tho, so I'm thinking it might be a issue with BTS or with nlite. Any ideas how i can find out? Cheers Nath
  18. What are these cmd windows doing exactly? As I get the dreaded "Advanced INF: Access Denied" message when a user logs on as a restricted user, its a bit of a problem. Even more so as we have 300+ users on multiple machines and i'm trying to get a RIS build done asap :S I dont remember this ever happening with other nlite versions [if the above error is indeed related to this problem]. Any advice or work arounds would be handy. I'm using BTS DPs also and using AutoImage to create the build which is all working fine except for this problem. Regards Nath
  19. i'll have a look. I have that disc somewhere about... and you can make transforms using orca btw Give me a few and ill see what i can do. EDIT: Had no luck so far You might want to look at: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...;hl=systemworks that might help you. regards Nath.
  20. any idea how tho? lol I think that if u use the winforms to create the gui objects and stuff, it wont be native. Annoying because thats the easiest way for me to make it how i need to [as im new to the coding side of stuff]. EDIT: just looked at the link - i notice this: "Build 32-bit native code applications designed for Windows using the Windows Platform SDK" so i'm installing it... in hope Cheers Nath
  21. I haven't yet... im about to start it Using the 2005 EE versions of C++ and VB btw. I'm just after a simple windows standalone app - all it will do is run programs/setup installers that are located on in the same directory or higher up than it. Even if the app required VB6 runtimes [like a VB6 project - had the same prob there] that wudn't be so bad, as they are more light weight and I would just need to find a way for the machine to install them automatically if they are needed. Any thoughts wud be really welcome thanks. Cheers Nath
  22. Hi all I'm just wondering whether its possible to create a standalone app in Visual Studio 2005 that doesn't require .net 2.0 in order for the app to launch? As the app is gonig to be used on old systems that include 98 / ME and 2k, having to install .net 2.0 first will defeat the point of things really - especially on old machines where installing .net 2.0 on them wont particually help the system. Sorry if i have posted this in another thread btw - i meant to make a new thread most likely. Cheers Nath.
  23. hehe Kev, you don't work for Powys do you? If so, give me a shout privately We've got a Dell laptop from the county that I had best check when school starts again. Cheers Nath.
  24. I know its not really an answer but... Have you thought about using this? http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversyst...on/sysreqs.mspx It's free, and can help u install all updates you need locally, at a time that suits you.... using group policy or the local machine policy editor in 2k Pro. I use a combo of UA XP CD's and RIS installs, together with WSUS for keeping the machines up-to-date ....although I don't use 2k workstation at all in work. Regards Nath.
  25. hmm.... Just a quick thought.... You have restarted the BINL service [and associated services just to be sure] haven't you after adding the drivers for it? I believe that the drivers have to be specific for the RIS task but I'm not too sure on the details of that as I use RogueSpear's AutoRIS /AutoImage kit along with BTS's Driverpacks. Good luck Nath
