OK, first of all, I have an older Win 98SE computer that I use for testing and trying things out on. I am weak on DOS knowledge ... have never spent that much time on DOS to really get to know what all I can do with it. I was not aware that the Win 98 "protected mode" could be a problem. I just thought I should know how to install these items for general knowledge. Second, I have a few older desktop computers and my older notebook that do not have a CD burner. I want to try to do a Ghost backup on those computers using a Ghost USB program. I backup my newer computers with Ghost with no problem since they have CD/DVD burners but these older computers, I think I will have to use a USB flash drive in DOS. This is what I understand from searching things out on Google. I need to get the Ghost backup onto a flash drive then go to a computer with a burner and I then have my CD/DVD Ghost backup. herbalist ... my older computers have both a floppy and CD drive but I try to transfer boot floppies and everything to a CD, much easier to work with. thanks ...

I asked this question under the DOS Programs thread ... jaclaz responded suggesting that I start a new thread dealing with this subject. My original post in the DOS Programs ... Need some help ... advice with installing the DOS USB drivers mentioned in Post #27 (DOS Programs). I am interested in the USBDOS - http://bretjohnson.us/ package. There are around 28 items + a ReadMe file in the download but I am not sure how to put them on my machine or where. That package is dated Jan 30, 2010. Do I "drag and drop" or "copy and paste", if so, to what folder in Windows or do I click on each item to install? thanks ... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reply from jaclaz ... @duffy98 It is much more complex than what you think. Please start a new thread where we can discuss this issue without hijacking the present thread. jaclaz --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, I will be reading all replies. thanks ...

This site, which offers several Free Antivirus Rescue CDs and DVDs may be of help ... but since you can't seem to download anything, you would need help from a friend's computer with the help of a CD/DVD burner. They have something new added called: PCTools Alternate Operating System Scanner http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/ant...rescue-cd.shtml *** The link to this "new" program seems to be dead, maybe it is temporary ... can't say for sure. Too bad if it is dead, it sure sounded interesting. PCTools Alternate Operating System Scanner ... This is a bootable anti-spyware scanner that is able to disable spyware components that you cannot get rid of while running Windows (since the spyware prevents itself from being removed). After booting to your CD and running this program, you may still want the companion (commercial) Spyware Doctor to get rid of the remaining bits of the spyware on your system. (Note: since this product has not yet been officially released, it's listed only on the "Labs" page. To get it, click the "PC Tool Labs" link on the side column of the page, then scroll down to look for the "Alternate Operating System Scanner.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I haven't worked with that program, so I know little about it, it's listed as "new". I have the Kaspersky Rescue Disk. Just wanted to have something on hand in case I had a future problem. Kaspersky Rescue Disk "This rescue disk contains a bootable CD that will also boot to a Linux environment, and run a version of the Kaspersky anti-virus program. Like most of the other links on this page, this is an ISO file." ... I would check them all out ... the last Kaspersky Rescue Disk did work with Win 98SE and some of the others may also still work. They aren't always up to date but they usually allow you to go online and update the program or you could just run the CD to see what happens. In the end, you may just want to do what Fredledingue suggested in his earlier posting and try to get an original Win 98SE OS CD and start completely over. I helped a friend fix his computer several years back ... going very slow, 15 minutes to boot up and other stuff ... I put on an anti-virus program, got it running ... there were over 2700 viruses found on his machine ... the anti-virus program just couldn't get rid of about 6 problems. I just re-did his computer with a fresh install of ME (his OS) ... the only choice really left. HTH ...

Generic driver for multi-card reader USB
Monroe replied to Fredledingue's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Fredledingue ... thanks again for the info. After reading Multibooter's thread on single and multi card readers (dencorso - message #6) I decided to get the one that he recommends ... MSI StarReader mini II ... it is a single card reader with various size card slots. Made out of stainless steel and blue led light. Only puts one drive letter on your machine. Trouble is I can't find one for sale anywhere ... At MSI they list "Where to Buy" retailers ... Amazon, Buy.com and several that have gone out of business. Can't find the card at Amazon or Buy.com ... will search on Google. I guess with this card reader and the multi boot card reader I already have, I should be covered, now and down the road. ... thanks -
Generic driver for multi-card reader USB
Monroe replied to Fredledingue's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Again dencorso, thanks for posting the links to Multibooter's thread. You always come through with information or help. I have read and copied everything to a folder ... thanks Fredledingue also for your help on a Smart Card and a Multi Card breakdown and the downloads. I am saving everything to a cd for the future, never know if it might be needed and then the downloads might be gone. I admit, I got my card reader probably over a year ago ... bought a cell phone replacement battery direct from Hong Kong and they also had this muliti card reader for sale ... it came with a mini-cd with Win 98SE drivers ... so I thought I had better get a card reader while it still worked with Win 98SE. Then I completely forgot about it till last month. I'd been wanting to get one anyway for a couple of years. My reader only has 4 slots but I see some come with 5 slots, not sure what card goes in the 5th slot or what I'm missing on my card reader. It does read the card I use in my camera. This is an area that I never spent a lot of time investigating and I guess I should. What got me concerned was when Fredledingue started this thread and I read his first post and the card reader that I had bought came back into my head ... located the reader but I could not find the mini-cd with the Win 98SE drivers ... the card reader has no name, just Hong Kong on it, so no web site to go to for the drivers. So I put the MDGx Smart Card Base update on and the new Dec 2009 usbstor.inf update I found in another posting by dencorso ... plugged the card reader in and it was recognized. I have no idea if I needed the updates or not, just happy the card reader was recognized since I couldn't find the mini-cd with the drivers. ... as I said earlier, I guess I need to learn more about card readers for Win 98SE. I may even look around for a cheap 5 slot card reader to have on hand, since I have no idea what card size is missing on my 4 slot card reader. It could be a card I will never use, don't know. Need to research all this. ...thanks again. ** Fredledingue ... Question, that picture of a 5 card reader (Transcend) that you posted earlier, is that the card reader that you have? Looks like a good card reader. -
Generic driver for multi-card reader USB
Monroe replied to Fredledingue's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thanks for the info ... I wasn't real sure about a smart card reader. I have a 4 slot multi card reader ... it puts 4 drive letters on my computer, usually E thru H ... I guess the NUSB works for me without anything additional. There is one other thing that I did do, came to me later after I posted earlier. I replaced usbstor.inf with the one that dencorso made dated Dec 2009 ... maybe that was of some help or the NUSB 3.3 took care of everything. -
Generic driver for multi-card reader USB
Monroe replied to Fredledingue's topic in Windows 9x Member Projects
Thanks for the download. I bought a card reader last year and never got around to installing it till last month. I had lost the little cd that came with it, that had the drivers on it for Win 98SE. I saw this download update from MDGx dated 01-07-2010. I already had NUSB on my machines and installed the Smart Card Base. The card reader installed with no problem. I wasn't sure if that Smart Card Base would work but something worked. I will still download what you posted, always good to have it saved somewhere, never know. 01-07-2010 Smart Card Base: • Microsoft Windows 98/98 SP1/98 SE/ME Smart Card Base Components Platform Software Developers Kit (SDK) Redistributable: Direct download [1.05 MB]. Win 98SE: 2xExplorer (Older Version) - xplorer2 (Newer Version)
Monroe replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thanks for the discussion on the newer version of xplorer2. As I stated earlier, the older version (2xExplorer) was more to my liking. It does open fast and I was just after a double pane program. One thing I really like since I keep all my hidden folders hidden is that I don't have to switch back and forth to see the folders anymore. They can stay hidden but 2xExplorer will show them anyway so you can work with them. I'm sure xplorer2 also does that ... maybe one day, I'll give it another try ... 2xExplorer just seemed a little bit easier to work with at the time. -
Windows 98SE - uTorrent 1.8.4 Build 16688 Question
Monroe replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thanks for all the info on the torrents. For now, uTorrent v1.8.4 Build 16688 works great for me on Win 98SE. I just wasn't sure about going to a higher version with Win 98SE. I haven't run into any problems with that version of uTorrent on my machines as of this posting. sp193, that's too bad you can't get a higher version to work over 1.7.7 ... maybe try the 1.8.4 version again, works fine for me, with or without KernelEx installed. Maybe it will work for you. -
I have a few suggestions or ideas that you might consider since you have limited resources. I no longer use Spybot. I use to like that program several years back until it became a resource issue with me. Why not consider SpywareBlaster ... it actually doesn't run at all and does what Spybot does. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html No-Nonsense Security SpywareBlaster can help keep your system secure, without interfering with the "good side" of the web. And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background. It works alongside the programs you have to help secure your system. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Then I also have the latest Hosts file on my machine .... Jan 12, 2010. That doesn't run at all ... so I got rid of Spybot and use SpywareBlaster and the latest Hosts file. http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/2005/PL20...EMUTILITIES.php Then there is a little program called MemLoad that tells you exactally what each running program is using in resources and uses very little resources itself. MEMORY HOGS A program Memload (2.0, july 2001) written by Johan Samuelson. It lists the memory usage for every main process in the order of how demanding they are. Memload is a great little tool in order to quickly find out the memory hogs amongst the programs. Unfortunately Memload only works under Win95/98 and is no longer supported by the author, although it can still be downloaded from Tucows. The program is very small and doesn't require any installation, just unzip and start using it. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A little program called RAMpage hardly uses anything and will free up memory automatically. Click on the word RAMpage (green color) in the upper part of the page ... that is version 1.6. Further down there is mention of ver 1.6.1 but it would only be for what the description says. I use ver 1.6. http://www.jfitz.com/RAMpage/ Features: * Frees memory automatically, on demand, or after an application finishes running * Very low active memory footprint, and very low resource and CPU usage * Can run "hidden", which further reduces memory and resource usage * Can be run from a batch file, or via a shortcut, to free memory on a "once off" basis * Easy to install, configure and automate, (click here to see the configuration screen) * Freeware ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cacheman is a nice little utility that will adjust the memory settings on a Win 98SE machine. Cacheman v4.1 works very well on my machines but you may find a later version that also works well. Cacheman 4.1 for Windows 95/98/ME Cacheman is a utility which tweaks the Disk Cache settings of Windows 95/98/ME and prevents frequent swapping of the data to hard drive resulting in an improved performance, system reaction time and even stability. Besides this Cacheman corrects also generic problems on systems with more than 512MB of RAM. *** I can no longer find a link that works for version 4.1 but I found a link to version 5.0 ... I just happen to like version 4.1 but others like 5.0 or 5.5. I will continue to look for a working link and post it when found. http://www.old-software.com/software-52-cacheman.html Link to version 5.50 that may work ... not 100% sure it is Freeware, I think it might be, it's old now and they call it "Cacheman Classic". Others who use it may be of some help. http://www.outertech.com/index.php?downloa...imageField.y=11 Maybe these programs could be of some help on your older machine.

Windows 98SE - uTorrent 1.8.4 Build 16688 Question

System Safety Monitor (SSM) v2.0.8.583 Conflicts ?
Monroe replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
thanks herbalist for the reply and all the information about SSM. I was not aware of the Pro version so I will give it a try. Between the two versions, SSM-free, 2.0.8.583 and SSM-pro, 2.4.0.622-beta, do you recomend people mostly stick with the free since it is not "Beta"? Just wondering what extras you get with the PRO version over the "Free" version. Curious what version you like using on your machines? thanks. -
Just a quick question about Windows 98SE and uTorrent. In the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" list uTorrent is not currently listed in the"File Sharing and File Downloaders" section. I myself like uTorrent ... currently using version 1.8.4 Build 16688, which works great with Win 98SE. I thought I read in a MSFN posting somewhere that some people were saying that the next version (1.8.5 Build 17414) had some conflicts with Win 98SE. Can someone verify that this might be true. At the web site they are still listing Win 98 as working with uTorrent. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What are µTorrent's system requirements? Very low. It works on as weak a system as Windows 95 on a 486 with 14MiB of RAM (with the Winsock2 update), up to 2003 and Vista. It also works on 64-bit Windows. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can anyone verify that the new numbered version ... uTorrent 2.0.0 RC4 still works with Win 98SE. That's a pretty big jump from version 1.8.5 to 2.0.0 ... FileHippo is still saying "Windows (All Versions)" with this new 2.0.0 version. thanks ... *** This is the current listing in the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" list of "File Sharing and File Downloaders". This posting is to get the attention of herbalist ... and anyone else using and working with SSM v2.0.8.583 and Windows 98/98SE. I mention herbalist since I know from past messages that he uses SSM. I just read your posting about SSM at the KernelEx thread. As you experiment and work with SSM, I (maybe some others also) would like to know what conflicts you might be running into using SSM. Some time back, I was using SSM and had a conflict with Media Player Classic ... which you verified on your end. In time I just decided to ditch MP Classic and went to VideoLAN VLC Player 0.8.6, which I like better anyway. I did get away from having SSM on my machines after the MP Classic problem. However, in the last two weeks I came across SSM on one of my backup CDs and was thinking of putting it back on my computers. I understand from your message at the KernelEx thread that there was some sort of conflict with KernelEx and SSM which seems to have been fixed. I am still using the last version of KernelEx on my computers ... KernelEx v4.0 Final 2 by Xeno86 ... did this run OK with SSM or are you referring to the new Beta version running OK with SSM? What version of SSM are you working with? I think SSM v2.0.8.583 was the last free version available and it also worked with Win 98SE. The link to the company in the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" no longer works, just tried it before I started this message. I think there were later versions of SSM but the company either was bought out, changed it's name or just went away. I always thought this was a very interesting program but I didn't work with it all that much. You mentioned in the KernelEx thread that you will be doing more testing on a new system. As for myself, I'd appreciate any news or findings concerning SSM as you work with it ... or any SSM news! ... thanks

In the "Last Versions of Software for Windows 98SE" list there are links to xplorer2 PRO and Lite versions. A few months ago I tried the xplorer2 Lite version and just didn't care for it, seemed a bit too complicated, since all I was after was having two Explorer windows to use every so often. Well, the company mentions about a link to their older version 2xExplorer but they try to discourage you from going there, they want you to work with the new version. I downloaded the "old" version and for Windows 98SE, it's a nice little program. Just thought I'd mention it in case some other Win 98SE users would also like to check out 2xExplorer. The link is still working and you might want to give it a try or just download and save a copy somewhere. I had no trouble figuring out how to use 2xExplorer immediately and it is a simple two window Explorer type program. May also be OK for other OSs if you didn't like the newer xplorer2 version. I'm not saying xplorer2 isn't a good two window Explorer program, it probably is ... I just found the older version (2xExplorer) easier to work with and understand. It is listed as working with these OSs: Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT 4.x, Windows 2000, Windows XP From xplorer2 web page: * I am looking for 2xExplorer Please follow this link for the old website. I still like 2xExplorer to use for a quick two pane Explorer program. Might just keep both. Thanks guys, concerning the requirements for Virtual PC ... I never really gave that much thought, I was figuring since it worked with Win 98SE, it would just work. I did try to put Virtual PC v5.1.0 on one of my Pentium IIIs and I got the "compatability" box again. KernelEX wasn't installed on it, didn't think it ever was but somewhere in the last 3 yrs I must have installed an earlier version and something is still there. Got this computer from a seller on eBay in 2006. Well, I have a couple other notebooks and one desktop in storage ... that one I know for sure never had KernelEx installed on it. Just wanted to try this program out, see how it worked. ...

Well, finally back from doing the reinstall on the "old" Toshiba. First of all, thanks glock_94 for that confirmation with KernelEX and Virtual PC. Yes, that really is too bad there has to be a conflict between the two. I have been able to install a few newer programs because of KernelEX but was also hoping to be able to put Virtual PC on the same computer. However, when I finally had everything set up and installed Virtual PC again and started to run it, I got a new pop-up window with the following. Virtual PC is incompatible with the host processor in this machine. Virtual PC requires at least a Pentium II (or equivalent). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sure is a picky little program ! ... Well, I said it was an older laptop that I now use for testing programs and things out. It is a Toshiba Pentium MMX so I will have to move up to my Pentium III or Pentium M machines. I will uninstall ver 5.1.0.370 and maybe try ver 4.3.2, possibilty that older version will work with a Pentium but I won't bet on it. So I will try version 5.1.0.370 on a Pentium III later. I hope one day the KernelEX and Virtual PC issue might be worked out, if it's possible. I only mention this Pentium II thing in case someone else is using an older computer below a Pentium II. Thanks for the help. Will post after I install Virtual PC on my Dell Pentium III.
-
Rick ... Yes, that's what I also remember seeing after KernelEX is installed ... something about "compatibility" so I figured early on that might be my problem. I am going to go put the Ghost backup on and try Virtual PC 5.1.0.370 again. Will post information after I'm finished. I just hope I never had KernelEX installed on that machine as an earlier version. Then I will ask about KernelEX leftovers in the KernelEX thread. I may think twice about installing it on my computers from now on ... it does make a Win 98SE machine much nicer for additional software but it may have some drawbacks also. I just always assumed if you uninstalled it, it was gone ... maybe not the case. thanks ...
-
jaclaz, No, I have Win 98SE installed only on my machines ... I was using my oldest laptop, which I use as a testing machine for everything before I put something on my newer Win 98SE notebooks. I am going to read your links for any help. Rick, OK, when I first installed Virtual PC 5.1.0.370 on my test notebook I did have KernelEX installed. As I was trying to figure something out about that pop-up window, I thought about having KernelEX also installed on the notebook ... So I uninstalled KernelEX and also Virtual PC and ran every cleanup tool I have on the computer and deleted the Virtual PC folder and cleaned the registry. Then I reinstalled Virtual PC 5.1.0370 again and got the pop-up window about Win Application Compatability Mode Detected. I then uninstalled Virtual PC 5.1.0.370 and ran all the cleanup tools again and cleaned the registry. I then installed version 4.3.2 and still got the pop-up window. Do you think after removing KernelEX that there is something there somewhere? I have a Ghost backup that never had KernelEX installed so later today I may redo this computer with that backup. I will wait to see if you, jaclaz or anyone has any ideas. If there are some KernelEX leftovers around where would they be? ** I would like to add, that I Googled that "Win App Comp Mode" term along with "Windows 98SE" and could find nothing ... everything seem to deal with XP only. thanks ...
-
In another thread I was reading about Connectix Virtual PC v5.1.0.370. It is supposed to be the last version to work with Windows 98SE. I was able to find a trial version download using Google. It installed OK but when I went to run Virtual PC this window popped up: Windows Application Compatibility Mode Detected. Virtual PC cannot be run under Windows Application Compatibility Mode settings. Please turn off these settings before running Virtual PC again. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I then deleted that version and installed the trial version 4.3.2. I get the same pop-up window and can go no further. What exactly does that mean and how do I turn it off in Windows 98SE? ... or any ideas or suggestions? thanks ...
-
rainyd ... Yeah, I had all that in there but was not getting something right. I had the K-Lite Codec Pack with MP Classic also included. Well, maybe one day I'll fool around with it all again on my Win 98SE test computer. I'd like to know what I was messing up on. thanks ...

I was using Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 for quite some time with Win 98SE and never had the problem that you are experiencing. I'm sure there has to be a setting there somewhere. I won't be much help for that, but in case you can't get it figured out then maybe this will be of some help. As I mentioned earlier, I was using MP Classic for several years for everything until I discovered XMPlay for audio cds and mp3 music. It played music 100% better than MPC. So I only used MPC for DVDs and flash videos until I came across VLC Media Player v0.8.6 .... I needed a player for mp4 videos and could never get MPC to play these ... never could figure out the settings. VLC Media Player played the mp4s right from the start and then I discovered it seem to play DVDs and flash video better than MPC ... at least I thought the video was better after doing a comparison. It might just be my imagination but I thought the picture was just a little sharper with the VLC Media Player. XMPlay gave me better sound and VLC MP gave me a better picture. So if you can't figure out the MPC problem you might want to check out the others that I have mentioned. ** Note: As I was typing this I just discovered that a newer version of XMPlay has come out ... Dec 22, 2009. I am not sure about it still working with Win 98SE. I will download it and check it out later today or if anyone has already done so, please let us know. I know the last version 3.4.2.1 does work. The new version is 3.5 and there may be a good chance it will still work with Win 98SE. *** The new version 3.5 works with Win 98SE and may sound even better when all the settings (equalizer and such) are finalized. VLC Media Player 0.8.6 for Windows 98SE http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html Windows 95/98/Me VLC 0.8.6 is the latest release with support for this operating system. Please note that these versions of Windows are not officially supported. No VideoLAN developer uses any of these systems, which makes them hard to support. VLC should mostly work with them, but some incompatibilities might appear. You might need to download The Microsoft Layer for Unicode on Windows 95/98/Me Systems. The two MSLU files need to be put in the C:\Windows\System\ folder. Warning: The following package is not up-to-date with the latest official version of the software. When using an out-of-date version, you may encounter important bugs or security holes.
