  1. I'm having a hard time visualizing this. Is it possible that you can get a screenshot of a system that works the way you want it to, and your current one so I could see the difference? EDIT: Would this tweak solve your problem? - http://www.askvg.com/how-to-get-the-old-thin-taskbar-buttons-with-text-in-windows-7/ Cheers and Regards
  2. Fair enough. But, to me, that sounds like a basic problem with your system, or your CD-ROM drive supplier, that I would want to get fixed, rather than just working around it by using floppies to install. Just my opinion, I'll drop it now. Sorry I don't have a better suggestion for you. Good luck. Cheers and Regards
  3. From what VERY little I know about nLite, your Last Session.ini file looks OK. (See? It's just a text file.) Someone else who knows more will have to comment further if they see anything out of whack. Keep in mind that, as far as I know, it is best to only run nLite once on a source. Multiple consecutive runs have been known to cause problems. The exception is that it is perfectly alright to run nLite to integrate SP3 into your source as a stand alone step. In other words, (I think you said that you have a XPSP2 CD that you want to use as a base for a new up to date XPSP3 install disc?), I can envision the following steps: A - XPSP2 CD - Your original starting point 1) Integrate SP3 - do this in a stand alone step with nLite - make an extra copy of the result of this step and put it away for safe keeping. - this is now your new starting point for all future steps. B - XPSP2 CD + SP3 1.5) As an extra, optional, manual step you can remove the files/folders that Mr. K-- mentioned that are no longer necessary. IF you do this step, make an extra copy of the result of this step and put it away for safe keeping. - this is now your new starting point for all future steps. C - XPSP2 CD + SP3 - Junk From what I understand, it is best to do these next steps all in one nLite run: 2) Add MS updates 3) Add MS extra apps such as IE8 4) Add any tweaks you might want 5) Perform any component removals 6) Add any addons 7) Add drivers specific to your system 8) Create ISO D - New XPSP3 install ISO 9) Burn ISO to CD/DVD 10) Install your new OS - It is always best to either install your new OS for testing either in a VM or on an extra HDD so that if anything messes up you are able to load up your old OS and try again. Once satisfied, install it for real and be happy. Though you should do 2-8 all at once for your final run, as you are figuring things out and seeing what will fit on a CD, you will do portions of that at a time, such as 2-4 or 2-5 or 2-6, and see how much room you have left. That's fine. But when you then want to do step 5 or 6 or 7, don't just do that step in another nLite run by itself on the result you had before, go back and do 2-5 or 2-6 or 2-7 in a single nLite run starting with either B or C each time. ( I hope that makes sense. ) It is also best to temporarily disable any anti-virus program you have installed on your system during any nLite run since anti-virus programs have been known to cause mysterious problems that might not show up until you try to install your new OS. You can unplug your computer from the Internet while your anti-virus is disable if you are at all concerned. OK, now I really have exhausted all the nLite knowledge I have to impart. Good luck, and Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to you as well. Cheers and Regards
  4. LOL Personally, I never even go to the Frontpage or look at any of the news articles. Everyone I know who comes here goes straight here to the forums to either look for an answer to a problem or to browse through and see if they might be able to help someone else. The forum has 103,224 current members with 924,464 posts - a tremendous resource of knowledge. I would suggest starting your forum exploration at the forum board main page. - http://www.msfn.org/board/. An alternative link that I personally use as a starting point can be found near the top of that page, the "Today's active content" - http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=active. At the bottom of that page you can then set the time period you want to see content from, such as the last 24 hours, week, 2 weeks, month, 6 months, or year. As of right now, there have been 24 entries to the forum board in the last 24 hours, 89 in the last week, 330 in the last month, and 3127 in the last year. The forum is definitely not dying. Welcome to the MSFN! Cheers and Regards
  5. I'm sorry if we keep suggesting that you do something that you don't want to do, but where did you think you could get a copy of Win98 on floppy for less money than a used, or even new CD-ROM drive will cost? I can't think of any option to find such a set other than eBay. But even if someone had a set they were willing to give you for free, with Win98 already loaded on them, postage alone to mail them to you is likely to cost more than a CD-ROM drive. That many blank floppy disks, IF you can find them, will definitely cost more than that. Not to mention that install by floppy, or even just copying from 39 floppy disks to your HDD will be slow as all get out and prone to error. Perhaps if you could explain why you do not wish to pursue replacing your CD-ROM drive it would make more sense or we could offer you another alternative. Cheers and Regards
  6. You did just fine using a quote. Sorry you had problems with that rogue ZOOM downloader program. I'm glad you were able to remove it. But I'm not sure where you want to go from here. I read your response to Mr. K-- above, and I'm not sure what you meant there either. I have only used nLite a few times so I am not at all an expert, but do I understand correctly that you wish to make an XP install disc (what you called "a code"??) directly from your currently installed system, rather than using another install disc, or ISO, as a starting point? I believe that is one of the capabilities of nLite, but I've never done it that way so I'm afraid I will not be much help to you if that is your intention. Also, I'm not sure if that is the best idea in your case. If you were "infected" by annoyances like the ZOOM downloader, are you absolutely, positively sure that you don't still have some other rogue infection on your PC that you would just be transferring to your new install disc if you chose to do things that way? Your comment that "...one run NL said an Update had been added out of nowhere. No idea where it came from." leads me to think that could be the case, even though you say that you haven't had any more problems like that since you reinstalled nLite. Just a thought. I also don't think you completely understand what the Last Session.ini file is. There is no reason to fear it. It is only a text file, nothing more. You can open it with Notepad and read what is inside it. It is a normal, expected product of every nLite run. You can think of it as just a log of what was supposed to happen, if that makes more sense to you. As far as I know, if a Last Session.ini file is not produced every time that nLite is run there is something very wrong going on. If the Last Session.ini file that is produced cannot be opened and read easily using Notepad, (open Notepad, click File - Open - navigate to and select the Last Session.ini file), then there is something very wrong going on. If it is in your way for any reason after you make an nLite run, rather than delete it, it might be better to just move it somewhere out of the way, your documents folder perhaps, but accessible in case you need it for any reason. Regardless how you choose to proceed, good luck in your endeavors, keep us apprised of your progress, and please let us know how we can assist you. Cheers and Regards
  7. Almost seems like you're missing a driver or something on your Win7 system. Cheers and Regards
  8. Did you use the standard Vista built-in Format, or some other software tool? Did you make any format option changes or did you just accept all the defaults? Any reason you didn't just do all the partitioning and formatting in the Win 7 x64 box? Can you try that? Cheers and Regards
  9. Images often tend to disappear AFTER THREE YEARS!!! Cheers and Regards
  10. @chl2012 - As jaclaz likes to say, my crystal ball is broken and I can not read your mind. WHICH MS site and WHAT, EXACTLY was the 11 character file name that you ended up with that you didn't know what to do with? For the three files listed previously, repeated here for your convenience: I successfully downloaded, by clicking the nice red "Download" button on each page referenced, the three files which were named: IE8-WindowsXP-KB2761465-x86-ENU.exe IE8-WindowsXP-KB2510531-x86-ENU.exe IE8-WindowsXP-KB2544521-x86-ENU.exe respectively. No sign of any "11 charactern blob". So I'll ask again: 1) What is the link for the problem MS download page? (If you can post a screenshot that would be gravy.) 2) What, exactly, did you do/click to begin the download? 3) What, exactly, was the full name, including extension if any, and size in bytes, of the "11 charactern blob "? and: 4) Do you have your computer set up to automatically download files directly to a "Download" folder, or the desktop, or do you have it set to ask you where to put the file each time? 5) If it is set to ask, what does it say the name of the file is going to be? (I personally have mine set this way for just this sort of reason. So I can tell before the download happens if I'm getting what I think I'm supposed to be getting.) 6) Out of curiosity, and in case there is a setting I'm aware of that might can help you, what is the exact browser you are using to browse the Internet and download these files? Please supply as much of the requested information as you are able to provide and feel free to ask if you need to know how to obtain any of it. We're trying to help you. As an example of what I'm looking for: 1) I went here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=8359ec5a-07f8-4b29-8576-7356a84daf82 - or - http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35962 1a) [Extra Credit LOL] 2) I clicked the big red "Download" button. 3) The details of the file that got downloaded are: Name: IE8-WindowsXP-KB2761465-x86-ENU.exe Size: 10,744,352 bytes [Extra credit] MD5: f7eb5021089cc7c83fd3f67d57801244 Cheers and Regards
  11. Which exact software tool are you using to format? How many partitions total? What is your mobo? Exact OS version? Cheers and Regards
  12. Which site and I'll look for you. EDIT: If you meant the three specific sites listed above, the full title is still there, while the string of characters are the KB article. Is that what you meant? Can you post a screenshot of the part of the page that is confusing you? Or at least provide the link and type the line or two that has the troubling characters. Cheers and Regards
  13. The Last Session.ini is a record of everything nLite thinks it was told to do the last time it was run, not just removals, and as submix8c says it can also be used to rerun an nLite run exactly without having to go in and manually reselect all the various options and possibly miss one. If you have any problems, It will help us discover if there are any differences between what you told nLite to do and what nLite thinks you told it to do. The quote is standard boilerplate we use at the top of many of the nLite help threads here in the forum. It became mandatory for folks that "just removed a few things, nothing important" and then wondered why their install failed. Cheers and Regards
  14. As you wish, my good man! Cheers and Regards
  15. Because: Sometimes the new replacement files are actually smaller than the original files, hence less space taken up. Also, now that the first hurdle is over, be aware of the request that is posted at the top of the nLite forum section, and that has been mentioned, I think, in this thread. (If not, it should have been.) This allows us to better help you no matter what nLite problem you are having. If you need help in knowing how to attach your Last Session.ini file to your post, just ask for assistance. (But there is a link at the bottom of the "create post block" window - "Help with attaching files" - which might suffice.) EDIT: OT - Everyone will know who you mean, and no offense will be taken, if you prefer to refer to "Mr. K--" as "Kel". Cheers and Regards
  16. A safer, more flexible way might be to shrink your partition to the minimum size that will hold the data in it before making your Macrium image. That way you can more easily restore it to any partition that will hold the data. Cheers and Regards
  17. You are quite welcome. Hopefully, you can now see why we were confused when you quoted a post, didn't edit it in any way, and added no content of your own. We had no idea what you were trying to say. Here's to better communication in this post apocalyptic time! LOL Cheers and Regards
  18. Yes! Actually, there are two parts to the answer. 1) The forum "Add Reply" buttons are labeled a little funny, in my opinion, and might be causing some confusion. In the thread, at the bottom right of each post there is a "Quote" button that opens a "create post block" window titled "Replying to NameOfThread" and copies that post in its entirety into the "create post block" surrounded by "quote" tags. At this point you are supposed to add whatever comments you might want to add, either before or after the quoted text, and edit the quoted text itself if necessary. (You can also copy all of the text in the "create post block" into another external text editor of your choice at this point, such as Notepad, to do the editing and post creation if that would be more comfortable or familiar for you, and copy it back when you are through.) As an example, I've edited the quote from your post above. I removed everything except the specific line I wished to respond to and highlighted a particular phrase. See? At the bottom of the "create post block" window are three buttons - "Add Reply" "Preview Post", and "Cancel". Scroll down if necessary to see them. "Cancel" throws away everything you might have done since opening the "create post block" window and takes you back to the thread where you were last. "Preview Post" shows you, above the "create post block" window, how the post would look if you posted it right then. The "create post block" window remains open for you to continue making changes if you are not satisfied how the post would look. "Add Reply", should, in my opinion, be labeled "Post Reply", because that's what it does. It actually causes the post to be "posted" to the thread for everyone else to see. It would also then be consistent with the "Preview Post" button. At the top and bottom of each page of the thread there is also an "Add Reply" button. This button does NOT do the same thing that the other "Add Reply" button does. It doesn't "Add" anything. It merely opens an empty "create post block" window with nothing copied into it. In my opinion, the "Add Reply" button at the top and bottom of each thread page would be more accurately labeled "Open Create Post Block Window", but I fully realize that is not a practical button name. So perhaps you clicked "Quote", then immediately clicked "Add Reply" thinking that that was what you were supposed to do to add your comments to what was quoted? 2) If there are multiple posts that you want to respond to at once, with quoted text from each, the way you do that is as follows: For each post you wish to quote and respond to, click the "MultiQuote" button located in each post right next to the "Quote" button. Unlike the action of the "Quote" button, a "create post block" window will NOT open. The only thing that will happen is that the "MultiQuote" button will remain highlighted indicating that it has been selected for quoting. You can even select posts from different pages in the thread. If you change your mind about any post you have selected, you can click the "MultiQuote" button again and it will un-highlight indicating that it is no longer selected. Once you have selected all the posts you wish to respond to, click the "Add Reply" button at the top or bottom of the thread page and a "create post block" window will open. All the posts you selected will be individually quoted inside the "create post block" in the order that they appear in the thread. From there you add your comments and edit the quoted text as described above. I hope that my explanation makes sense and that it will make posting your comments easier for you. Cheers and Regards
  19. Just for the record, what -X- said is correct. In this thread there are four posts (post #10, #11, #14 (you did comment on that one in your next post), and #19) where all you did was quote a previous post, the first one you quoted two times in a row, and you added no comment of your own at all in any way to three of them, and the one post you did comment on, you used yet another post to do so rather than add your comment in the same post. So I was very confused and I still have no idea at all why you did that or what you were trying to say. That's all. And no, I'm not trying to increase my post count since there is absolutely nothing to be gained by doing that. I guess I could accuse you of doing that since I can think of no other reason you would make that type of post. If you do not know how some of the edit box functions work, please ask and we will try to help you out. I also have trouble reading the small text in the edit box on this forum, this forum is the worst in that regard of the various ones I visit, but it is considered impolite to use all caps. Instead, you can either use the zoom feature in your browser as -X- mentioned to temporarily enlarge things to make them easier to see, or you can create your response in an external text editor of your choice, Notepad works fine, then cut and paste the entire response, or pieces of it, into the edit box in order to post your response. Yes, often DVDs are used as install media, and sometimes even USB connected keys or hard drives. But with judicious pruning: there is still room on a CD for a fairly complete XP install; fully up to date, drivers appropriate to your hardware, and some apps. Cheers and Regards
  20. Are you trying to say something? Cheers and Regards

    wifi?

But wireless did not take precedence in my case. The LAN was obviously used for Internet connection.. So, in this case, the LAN took precedence. Cheers and Regards
  22. @CodeMe I think that jaclaz has been very patient with you and given you all the tools you need, especially in this post: He then went above and beyond when, at your request, he tried to put it in "layman's terms" and gave you even simpler examples to practice with: The only evidence you gave that you attempted to experiment with any of the above was when you complained: The "extra" copies of the hosts file are created primarily for your benefit to help you understand what is happening in the various parts of the process, they are not meant to be kept in your final code. After you have gone through the steps as outlined and verified that the "hosts3" file has successfully accomplished your goal of deleting the 3 offending lines, then you can compress and clean up the code into a form suitable for distribution to your users. Assuming the above code is successful, the resulting code could look something like this: @echo off FOR /F "tokens=* delims=" %%A IN ('type "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts"^|FIND /V "www.etcetc.org"') DO ECHO %%A>>"%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts1" FOR /F "tokens=* delims=" %%A IN ('type "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts1"^|FIND /V "etc etc.org"') DO ECHO %%A>>"%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts2" FOR /F "tokens=* delims=" %%A IN ('type "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts2"^|FIND /V "update.etcetc.org"') DO ECHO %%A>>"%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts3" del "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" del "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts1" del "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts2" ren "%WinDir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts3" hosts EXIT So you are left with the one single hosts file. I assume that this is what you were looking for? Cheers and Regards
  23. Apparently, it uses gears, as you say, "to transform the relatively high speed (and very low torque) of the motor to enough (slow) torque actually needed". The final gear then has a post attached which acts against what looks like a spring loaded blade, cutting the "finger" with a guillotine type action while the "finger" is pinched between the blade and the housing. Cheers and Regards
  24. As you pointed out, it takes no guts at all to push ones finger anywhere on the output side of (practically) any size computer case fan. It is all but impossible to cut ones self in such a manner. This is also true with common house "box" type fans with either plastic or metal blades, again on the output or exhaust side. I did it many times as a kid. However, while you essentially can't cut yourself that way, your fingers can be bent or pinched between the blades and either the housing or the grill so care should be exercised around small children. Cheers and Regards

    wifi?

LOL You're correct, that's a big no. Sorry. I guess in my case why everything worked so easily was that both wired and wireless connections were going through the same router, NetGear WNR3500L N300 Wireless Gigabit Router, using the same gateway, just different subnets, with the router having been told where to get DNS info from (OpenDNS) so Internet access is available through both wired and wireless connections. OP colore has never clarified whether his situation was similar, a home wireless network, or if it was an Internet cafe, hotspot, or whatever that he was trying to connect to, and therefor what all he had access to in order to manipulate things for testing purposes. Slightly OT, I noticed that the laptop was picking up a weak signal from the neighbors wireless network. So just out of curiosity I tried to connect to it (I had set it up for her so I knew the access info), while already connected to both our home LAN and wireless networks. The signal was too weak so the effort was unsuccessful, but during the attempt our home wireless network connection was dropped. That made sense, since with only one wireless adapter in place it can only make one wireless connection at a time. Once the connection attempt failed, the home wireless network connection was automatically reestablished, since it had been set to "Connect automatically". Throughout the attempt, the wired LAN connection was maintained. Cheers and Regards
