  1. How so? Elaborate, please... it may help others.
  2. Probably a false positive. AVG 7.5 finds nothing. But do report it to 48bitlba, though...
  3. Philco is right! Here is the direct download link for the latest version (4.10.2226) of that patch COPY2GB.EXE
  4. If your bios recognizes it and can boot from it, it's possible. If you've got a Via chipset, there are free drivers for it. Read this and this. If not, you'll will need rloew's SATA inf and patch.
  5. nah it should work fine once you done what dencorso said You shouldn't be obligated to remove hardware to install an older OS when it will run just fine within a VM in the host (XP) system. @Tarun: with all due respect, I think you misread my post... I didn't suggest removing any hardware in a permanent basis. What I said is: remove 1 GiB, install, and add 1 GiB back. The removal is just for the install program to be able to run OK. After it's installed, Win ME will be able to run OK with 2 GiB and it will recognize *and* *use* 1995 MiB of it. It is faster than seeting up a VBox. And you end up with the real MCCoy (that is: Win ME running the real hardware). Myself, I do run alternatively Win 98SE and Win XP SP3 in a dual-boot set up on 3 GiB of RAM. To me, all the fun lies in giving Win 9x/ME full control over the hardware.
  6. Yep! As you know, Win 98SE sees at most 1160 MB and, AFAIK, Win ME can see up to 1995 MB, in optimum conditions. See frankminek's post about it. It's not quite 2GiB, but it's near enough, IMHO. BTW, frankminek's machine is in the list, of course.
  7. My tests indicate SCANDSKW.EXE v. 4.90.3000 works OK up to about 800 GiB (that's the value you get by multiplying 32 kiB clusters by the maximum cluster number found in my tests, about which I reported in this post.) For partitions bigger than about 800 GiB you'll still get a "not enough memory error".
  8. Although the link provided by jaclaz already points to it indirectly, I think a direct link to The Great Zero Challenge is well warranted here.
  9. Well, in the bottom part of post #1 of my Day-to-day running Win 9x/ME with more than 1 GiB RAM thread there is a link to it...
  10. remove 1 GiB; install ME; edit system.ini; add back 1 GiB; install XP
  11. Are they still going strong? I'm still using BROWSEWM.DLL 6.0.2900.2180 I've used the other two up to December 2008 with no issues. Then I've downgraded them in the process of trying to catch an elusive bug that turned out to be related to SHDOCVW.DLL 6.0.2800.1923 (now long superceeded) and never went back. At the moment I'm using SHDOCLC.DLL 6.0.2800.1443 and SHFOLDER.DLL 6.0.2800.1106. But I have no evidence that any of the three files ever did cause any issue. You might perhaps test them in your machine for sometime. AFAIK, it's quite safe. The newer Win XP SP3 versions of these three files I didn't test, though, so I don't know whether they work or not.
  12. I never heard of such an error before. But, why not get back to 256 MiB temporarily, just to test whether more RAM is the origin of the problem?
  13. AFAI had understood, RP9 ought to work equally well on 98SE and ME. BTW, what's the difference between full and minimal? What doesn't get installed in minimal?
  14. Win 9x/ME rocks with DVDs. Bet you got a bad drive. First exchange the data cable for another one and see whether it solves your problem. If not, get the vendor to exchange it for another unity.
  15. This is just to tell you Chip Genius V 2.72 is now available, over at http://www.mydigit.cn/chipgenius.htm To download it, just click on the leftmost link at the last line in the Chip Genius homepage. It is in chinese characters, of course: 点击下载 (where 点击 = click and 下载 = download).
  16. Sure. It's simply not true that the Win NT family OSes are immune to resources issues. I said just about that, a few days ago, over at the 16bit heaps expander thread, post #38... I do believe that thread, as a whole, would interest you.
  17. Hi, Tihiy! The tray still flickers... (issue reported here by me and by Whatever420). I'd really like to know your thoughts about it. BTW, ktm8 reports USER, GDI and SYS resources. AFAIK, the free SYSTEM resources are equal to the lesser value between USER and GDI. Since what I see makes no sense with the above definition, what does SYS in ktm8 represent? You rock!
  18. You mean Norton Utilities 2005, right?
  19. Yes.Get the Motto-Hairu driver (DI1000DD) here. Get USBASPI.EXE here. Set them in your config.sys as: DEVICE=USBASPI.EXE /NORST /W DEVICE=DI1000DD.SYS /H0 Enjoy! PS: There is some documentation on both drivers (from the time USBASPI was still USBASPI.SYS) in the attached zipped text file. By running USBASPI.EXE from the command line you should get some more info also. USBASPI.zip
  20. Sorry, but it in fact does exist. The NT family OSes instance an USER heap and a GDI heap on a per application basis. If they did not, they wouldn't be able to run Win 9x/ME applications. So, provided you find a really badly resources leaking application, you'll be able to see it crash, even on Win XP. You'll probably have to write such an app on purpose, however, because AFAIK there is no known app able to do it. But possible it sure is.
  21. There is no other! It's the one and only RAM Limitation Patch! BTW, if you had read post #1 looking for it, you'd've found it. The link is there, among the last few lines... The same goes for me: I know him only through the internet. However, since we have been discussing Win 9x/ME here for a long time now, and across many threads, by now I do consider RLoew among my MSFN friends, and have his posts in very high regard.
  22. Quick reference index of information about RP9 by Tihiy himself: USER Salvation GDI Salvation additional functionality
  23. It seems to be some quirk peculiar to the AcomData enclosure. And, yes, you're not alone... Google returns many similar cases. See, for instance: 10.5 certain external drives not mounting after restart or sleep; 10.4 ...after sleep, and this one that's more similar to your case: Acomdata 1T USB drive issue.
