Do one last test, set MaxFileCache=16384 and MaxPhysPage=30000 and see whether it succeeds at booting or not. If not, then you definitely need to test RLoew's RAM Limitation Patch with the /M option. You may get the free demo at his site. in any case, do keep me posted.

Quiet Riot - Come on feel the noise ... yet another cover that's way better than the original! And, yes, I know fully well the song's title should be spelled another way...

Thanks for your valuable contribution. You do rock! And please receive my belated warm welcome to MSFN, and to our Win9x/Me corner of it, where developers are sorely needed!

MaxPhysCache doesn't exist! It's MaxFileCache. Now, set MaxFileCache=393216 and MaxPhysPage=30000 and try again. If this doesn't work, then set MaxFileCache=32768, and try again. Note that MaxFileCache goes under [vcache], while MaxPhysPage=30000 goes under [386Enh]. If you do have a MaxPhysCache or a MinFileCache, do delete those lines. Then let me know what happened.

If my 1st suggestion doesn't work, then set MaxPhysPage=30000 just to get it to boot, and add Xeno86's patched VCache to C:\Windosws\System\VMM32 (check whether there is a VCache.VxD there first, and if there is, rename it to VCache.Old, before copying the modified one there). Once the machine begins booting and loading Windows, then we can tweak MaxPhysPage by steps, up to the max value that works for your system. A link to Xeno86's patched VCache is available in the first post of my > 1GiB list, for which there is a link in the left part of my signature. Good luck!

You should wrap your crystal ball with spider-silk and expose it (for not more than 2h) to the first morning dew after every 1st full-moon night, then unwrap it and let it dry on a dark place, for it to self-tune properly. Works well most of the time, but crystal balls can be very unpredictable, as you are well aware.

Help us help you: instead of a preemptive rant, you could have given the machine's specs and details about the black screen (is it fully black or has it any message, and if so what does it say? How much RAM does the machine have? What about a link to the user's manual? You want help, you're gonna get it, *provided* you do your part. We do not troubleshoot solely based on crystal balls... But my crystal ball says you should try MaxFileCache=393216, just in case.

PE explorer is precious, but you should also have the free Anolis Resourcer at hand, there are occasions in which it's simply the best tool to use, when modifying PE executables (to add a Version resource to a file that doesn't have one, for instance: ResHacker is supposed to be able to do this, but usually just renders the file unusable).

Services can be set to Start=0 (boot), loaded before ntoskrnl, Start=1 (system) loaded by ntoskrnl, and Start=2 (automatic), loaded around winlogon time and Start=4 (disabled) never loaded. Now, what exactly is the fate of Start=3 (manual) services? Are they (i) left alone until needed, or (ii) first initialized, then deactivated until needed, or even (iii) initialized and left in a twilight state in which they are not actually "started", but still have an active part in memory waiting an order to start?

Laptops are way bigger and heavier than notebooks, which are about twice as big and three times heavier than a netbook (and netbooks have 7", 9" or more usually 10" displays, while notebooks have moure usual sizes of display). I don't think laptops are produced anymore. Great link, jaclaz! Thanks a lot!

Are you using Windows 9x or ME with modern hardware?

It's OK. You might have used a bootable DOS diskette or CD, instead of changing video driver... It's far easier, IMO. -
How to access Wireless Network Addresses in 98SE

Winipcfg.exe (it's in C:\WINDOWS). -
Never mind the clickiness, unless it annoys you. The greatness of the Model M is its long key travel, coupled with the resistance of the internal steel coil spring, which makes it a real balsam for the fingers' joints (more so for those who learnt how to type in a real mechanical typewriter, not a computer keyboard).

Solved - Windows 2000 - Windows 98SE Question
dencorso replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
There may be a 0KB CONTROL.INI in %Windir%, but that's *not* the way to go, IMHO. My guess is: Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop and create a string value named "Pattern", and then modify it to contain your selected pattern. The format of the string can be gotten from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Patterns, which has the default list of patterns for the NT OS family (which does not include Stone, however, so it's great to be able to get it from Win9x). I don't have Win2k installed anymore, but for XP, the only pattern in the list in common with Win9x is Thatches, and this permits to ascertain that the format of the string is exactly the same. -

[Solved] Windows 98SE Display Properties Question
dencorso replied to Monroe's topic in Windows 9x/ME
This may be of help. -
And, then, you now have Netbooks too, which are yet another, totally different, animal, IMO. As for the PS/2, it was chosen to be in a mirror relation with OS/2, which is equally related to the venerable CP/M and OS/3x0 (with x in <6,7,8,9>), as far as the forward slash fad for naming OSes go. And, BTW, I'm typing this in my true blue Model M keyboard, manufactured in the US in 1993 by IBM, and still going strong, which is heavier than most Netbooks. Yay!

dencorso replied to vipejc's topic in Windows 9x/ME
No. AFAICS, you've got it all wrong, sorry! Apicdump.exe and Apicmsr.exe are diagnostic apps, intended to produce a text result each, to be posted here (zip and attach, please) or sent to RLoew by e-mail. You need to run each but once. They're intended to help him figure what's happening, so that he can hopefully fix it. They're *not* a magical solution to your issue, intended to be used on a permanent basis. -

[somewhat off-topic] @RLoew: Which Seagate HDDs are actually big sectored (Advanced Format)? Or, putting it the other way, which are still using 512-bytes sectors? Only those already manufactured? Which size sectors has a 1TB Barracuda LP? I once thought 4kiB sectors would be used just on 2TB+ HDDs, but it seems that's not the way things are. And what about Seagate SmartAlign? Is it any good? Posts are not stickified on request, only when really proven useful. That said, a How-to for Java is ceirtainly welcome. Any volunteers?
