Main advantage: FAT-32 and long filenames (LFN). Yes, it's installed by default with 9x. I recommend 98Se.

Right! With 2 GiB DOS, particularly MS-DOS 7.x (the one that comes with win 9x), should work with no hiccups. From the working DOS you can then install Win 9x using Usher method (limited to seeing/using 1 GiB RAM) or RLoew's patch (accessing all the RAM). Take a look at the machine list (post #2) in my > 1 GiB RAM thread, and muse over it for a while, taking into account what has been said in this thread.

No. You can install RLoew's RAM Limitation Patch with just one or both 1GB sticks inserted. Download the demo and read the manual.

Why was MSFN down yesterday and why is it still slow?

That the pinned thread at RyanVM's is already our unofficial regroup point, that's for sure. What happened specifically I sure don't know either, but sure MSFN did become unreachable for some 18 h late Friday and most of Saturday. I don't see it as a new phenomenom, but rather as part of the SQL issues we've been facing from before the update, and which were not completely healed by the update itself AFAICS... However, I keep hoping they'll be solved once and for all soon. -
Yes. That's exactly right: you get all messages posted (except your own), but further edits/updates are not mailed, only the original posts. Like Charlotte I never subscribe any thread, so that I also never remember that's a possible recovery avenue. Thanks for reminding us of that, and, of course, for the help in recovering the lost content. You rock!

Yahoo shows the thread as it is now, up to post # 7. BTW, I've updated the contents of post # 8. My conclusion is that about 28 h at the maximum went into oblivion... but MSFN was down most of that time.
-
I'll try, but I doubt I'll be able to solve it, if I ever find the reason for the issue... And, BTW, it's no longer locked.
-
No, sorry! I was away yesterday for longer than usual and got back just about two hours before MSFN got back online, and, at that point there was just one new post in the whole forum (this one, from 25, 2013 00:37:44 GMT, not in this thread). When I left, before the crash, my post from Aug 23 was the last one here. That's also what can be seen right now in Google Cache, which has a 25 Aug 2013 03:23:14 GMT timestamp, so, whatever was lost has to have been posted on the last four hours of the 23rd or on the 24th, while xper was fixing the forum... I doubt there can be any way to recover it. But you shouldn't rely on my back-ups, in any case, because only very rarely do I save posts which are not mine... and even my own posts I usually save selectively.
-
I think so. Again. So, I think that for this and the other handful of rapid-moving threads, the best thing to do is to keep backups of one's own latest half-a-dozen posts, so as to be able to reinsert them into the thread easily, whenever we get back from those lossy crashes/blackouts/database-rollbacks. What I do is to reopen a post I've just posted, as if for editing it, then highlight all of it, copy and paste to notepad and save as text (.txt). The text file thus generated can be posted back in just another copy/paste operation. Some paranoia is more than required, those days...

No, that is bothersome, but still somwhat OK... Now, if they both break together 1 week after manufacturer warranty ends... -

Good to see you again, Andrew T.! -
Yes. Wherever you are, RLoew's SATA patch goes for $11. And it works with LLXX 48-bit LBA patch, if necessary (It's listed in the "PRERELEASE AND BETA SOFTWARE" section of the site).
-
You get RLoew's patch, it solves your issue, no extra hardware is involved and support is assured. You get one of those adapters, the risk is higher, support is doubtful, and fact is most adapters are no good. Read carefully "SATA to IDE adapters: which/what/why?", before buying anything, then decide what to do.

IPB Update July 2013 (to version 3.4.5) - BUGS Only
dencorso replied to xper's topic in Site & Forum Issues
I'm using Palemoon 3.6.32, which is a special version of Firefox, later than 2.0.0.20 (although not too much later). Opera 12.2.1578.0 (the latest) exhibits the same issue. Now, while it sure helps to debug the issue, using IE 5.50.4807.2300 surely isn't an option, even if it's good to know it works. But your finding led me to test with other browsers, and it turns out that this works, and this also works for ハイドン, when I use IE 8.0.6001.18702, instead of Palemoon! So, in a nutshell: the issue does not exist for IE, but other browsers show it!!! Thanks for the info, buyerninety. You do rock! -
@bphlpt: Nothing to be sorry of, really. And no, it wasn't meant as sarcasm, either, but as a very friendly tongue-in-cheek remark, AFAICS... Cheers!
-
@bphlpt: with all due respect, and no offense meant at all, but... did you actually seriously believe puntoMX mightn't know who nuhi is? Creator of nLite and vLite.

You're a genius, jaclaz! You've just found a way to access ハイドン's profile! :thumbup So now we've narrowed down where the error is because this works, but this doesn't for ハイドン, but for jaclaz this works, and this does work, too!!! But notice that the latter form of the link is the way the forum builds the link by default, before the links are converted to those crawler-friendly nonsense err... links, I mean. -

... and that Vista SP2 / 7 / 7 SP1 (in both x86 and x64 versions) are about as secure as x86 Server 2003 SP2! (which is in a nushell what I said on one of the initial posts of this thread or some analogous one).
