Does Norton really suck a lot?
Tarun replied to RJARRRPCGP's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
Yes, Norton is that bad. Best tool from them, however, can be found here. -
Are you sure? It's listed under Releases. http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.or....3/win32/en-US/

doswind, While it is appreciated that you are trying to help, please do not post or PM any warez links. rov, try contacting Microsoft and see what they have to say. They may be surprisingly helpful.

There's no harm in activating. If you have to call Microsoft from frequent reinstalls, simply tell them why and they will activate you.

Free Large File hosting: the good and the bad...
Tarun replied to soporific's topic in Websites and Boards
Add Rapidshare to the bad list. Have you considered a page on Google Pages? -

Doing so can/will break a lot of features/functions in your computer, however. System defaults are the best.

Happy to help. Make sure your definitions are up to date and your Windows Firewall is on

Flush your System Restore points. Right click your E drive and click on Properties. Disk Cleanup button. More Options > System Restore frame > Clean up... button. That will flush all your System Restore points except for the last good value.

I don't know how it will work on Vista so I don't recommend it until I know how it will function.
-
Yes, Vista's firewall is Window's Firewall. Comodo is another firewall, not anti-virus (though they make an anti virus too).
-
For anti virus, stick with Avast. Vista's Firewall is said to be far better than that of Windows XP (because it blocks incoming and outgoing). Comodo will probably be Vista compatible.

I've tried the ipconfig /flushdns, to no avail. However, why does 127.0.0.1 need to be 0.0.0.0? That's the first time I've heard of the local host being that address. I was pointed to this link. Apparently, it's a feature in IE7. I can confirm this, because the file work fine for Firefox. So, how can I "undo" this annoying feature. 127.0.0.1 points to your machine. Sending it to 0.0.0.0 sends it to a dead address. When sent to the localhost address it will retry connection attempts multiple times. However, when sent to 0.0.0.0 it will try once and then stop. Unfortunately their Hosts file is inaccurate and bloated. It will slow down your network performance and surfing habits. They also give you misinformation about disabling the DNS Client service, which should not be disabled. Now there's one guy who's got a handle on the situation (finally). After letting AutoUpdates inject IE7 into my PC, I found all sorts of problems with O.E. etc. It was an easy choice to just go to Add/Remove programs and dump that turkey. I've blocked IE7 from ever downloading again. I too have been a fan of Mike Burgess and his custom hosts file, for many long months. I signed up for his newsletter (Hosts Alerts) and have his "Hosts Secure" program to download the latest Hosts file and install it where it needs to be. Maybe just deleting the old hosts file and replacing it with the latest one from Mike, would solve a bunch of problems. I'd sure give it a try. Like, what can it hurt? OldGoat43 He doesn't have a handle on the situation at all, his hosts file simply slows your machine and surfing drastically. Host file usage debunked which also features how to block malware and other items safely. Things like SpywareBlaster and IESpyAds will work wonders.

Should you need it in the future, you can put full AutoPatcher and XP SP2 onto a cd for ease of use.

It's not recommended to remove Internet Explorer as it is integrated into Windows. Simply disable the desktop shortcuts and basically "hide" it. Those nLite can remove it; it does not remove it properly and can cause many ill effects. Your best bet is to hide the shortcuts and if you have a irewall, you can simply disable Internet Explorers access to the Internet.

Sounds as though it is an isolated issue on your computer. Have you modified your Windows install any?
-
The DNS service has nothing to do with it. Have you tried running ipconfig /flushdns yet? Also, your 127.0.0.1 should be 0.0.0.0

Should you need help, you can also refer to the sticky at the top of this forum.

You can check/clean the system using free malware removal tools.

If it has broken an application you have programmed, fix it. If it's a program from a vendor, simply contact them about a fix. You really should keep your updates.

Your router will tell you everything, just look through your router's settings.

Are you using a custom theme?

Mr. Smith owned a small business. He had two employees, Sarah and Jack. They were both extremely good employees - always willing to work overtime and chip in where needed. Mr. Smith was looking over his books one day and decided that he wasn't making enough money to warrant two employees and he would have to lay one off. But both Sarah and Jack were such good workers he was having trouble finding a fair way to do it. He decided that he would watch them work and the first one to take a break would be the one he would lay off. So, he sat in his office and watched them work. Suddenly, Sarah gets a terrible headache and needs to take an aspirin. She gets the aspirin out of her purse and goes to the water cooler to get something to wash it down with. Mr. Smith follows her to the water cooler, taps her on the shoulder and says, "Sarah, I'm going to have to lay you or Jack off." *
