  1. You mean you don't want it to be able to do anything else, even log on? What is the purpose of this account? I'm not sure if it's possible to only let it make new users and nothing else... maybe through the user rights assignment part of local security policies (secpol.msc)?
  2. Or, to use a batch file to do the same thing: cd /d %userprofile%\desktop del /F /Q *.lnk cd /d %allusersprofile%\desktop del /F /Q *.lnk or cd /d %userprofile%\desktop mkdir folder move /Y *.lnk "%userprofile%\desktop\folder" to move to another folder
  3. Wow, geek... you've really had me rofl'ing tonight. Good work. Of course, you make a good point. But it sure would be funny to watch, at least for the first 2 minutes or so. Then it would get old.
  4. LOL ROFL!!!! Or just shutdown -s
  5. The PDF format does support password protection natively, actually. To my knowledge, the only way to edit a pdf is to use Adobe Acrobat, which is quite expensive. However, there are free tools that can make new PDFs from other document types, such as from MS word, etc. and that can password protect the documents they create. I like to use PDFcreator. It has a lot of useful features, is free, small and works well. It's open source as well.
  6. If they are already connected through ethernet, then there is no advantage to using wireless, since ethernet is faster, more reliable/stable, more secure and cheaper. Unless you mean something else, in which case it would be nice if you could please clarify a bit what you mean. Welcome to MSFN by the way.
  7. it should work just fine. However, I've got to ask - why on earth are you running XP with no service packs?! Seems like a kind of crazy thing to do...
  8. The reason official links are impossible to find is because they were all removed, because MS pulled back SP3 at the last minute.
  9. WTF??? They'd better hurry the heck up and fix it... this is ridiculous! And did anyone else notice that support.microsoft.com was down for about 5 hours this morning?
  10. From what I've seen, it appears that there is no way to encrypt the administrator password in winnt.sif for windows 2000... This of course is a big security risk. Is there any way to encrypt it in winnt.sif or if not, by some other means? Is there maybe someway to make a batch file that executes net user administrator newpassword and then obscure the batch file or something?
  11. Instead of the quad core, how about a nice Intel E8400? Cheaper, and fast as hell from what I've heard...
  12. I would hope he isn't... Now there's a scary thought. Although windows doesn't let you format the system or boot partitions.
  13. Hello, and welcome to MSFN. If you could please provide more details on what the message says, when it appears, and anything that happens around that time that could be related, then it would make it much easier for us to help you, since the information you have provided so far is not enough for us to know what the problem is. For example, is this after formatting for a clean install, or after formatting a partition using the disk management utility? Thanks!
  14. I like how it has a windows installer now. This will make it much easier for windows users to upgrade. I'll probably keep using windows xp as my primary OS, but for the next computer I build or buy, I'm thinking I'll probably just go with Ubuntu, now that it has such wide support.
  15. Since you have the Windows XP OEM disk, you can use that. Since it's OEM, it should also pre-activate, have the needed drivers slipstreamed already, etc. However, it probably won't have all the extra crap on it. You should try using that first. Or, you could configure the currently installed OS however you want - remove all the crapware, install the software you want, etc, then make an image of the machine and save the image either to a DVD if it'll fit or to an external hard drive. The tool I use to do imaging is called PING (PartImage Is Not Ghost) and it can do all of the above very easily, and I would highly recommend using that to make an image of your system once it's configured how you want.
  16. I'm doing a buddy-system download: I download the server iso and my friend downloads the desktop iso, then we burn eachother disks and that way each only have to download one iso instead of 2. Mine will be done in about half an hour... excited!
  17. I've heard that a certain pirate site has obtained a copy, and will be leaking it on the 29th!
  18. The i386 directory itself should rarely if ever contain such things. Open up notepad, then open <i386 directory>\winnt.sif. If it exists, post it here AFTER YOU REMOVE THE PRODUCT KEY (if one is present), and we can let you know if it looks like there's anything to add stuff, although I doubt there would be.
  19. IIRC, nLite will work as long as you tell it the i386 directory.
  20. If it came with a windows xp recovery disk, use that. It will be pre-activated since ASUS uses OEMBIOS activation, meaning any ASUS windows xp disk will work on any ASUS computer, essentially. Or, you could get any OEM version, take note of the key of the system installed - the key of the windows install actually on the HDD will almost certainly be different from the one on the COA because of how OEM's do activation and such. So, use some sort of key-finder utility, save the key somewhere other than on your laptop, then get any OEM XP home disk - it can be any brand or unbranded, and any SP, too, just it has to be OEM - then install windows. When you go to activate, use the key that you saved. If that fails, use the key on the COA, and if that fails, call MS activation and give them the key on the COA and follow their directions.
  21. My Internet place is my "home" , working from 09.00 (Open at 11.00) till 22.00 (mostly closing at 01.00) and that 7 days a week. But if you call a "home" the place where you sleep, then I have to delete my post I think...And when I talk about my second home (including female friends ), then I have to make a bigger list Heck, why not. Add your "home with females" I suppose if that is your "home" then fine, but I just didn't want this to turn into "I manage a network with 50,000 PC's. PC 00001 has... [...] [8 pages later] PC 50,000 has..."
  22. Is this on your home network or is that in the internet cafe? If it is your home network then that's fine, but if not, then at least say so. And if it is your home network, my apologies in advance for this post. B.T.W. - lots of people with WRT54GL's seem to use Tomato - is it better than DD-WRT in any particular ways? I installed DD-WRT yesterday, and so far I'm loving it
  23. Um it was built in June of 2000.... and it runs Windows 2000 very well. Detailed specs here. It's actually not that bad of a machine. It still works quite well, and I have no need to replace it since we only use it every once in a while, and not for anything intense like gaming or CAD, just for web browsing, word processing, etc.
  24. I'd suggest first asking your ISP if you're even allowed to host your own website. Yes, you'll need to forward port 80 (or is it 8080 for IIS?) to your PC's IP address. Go to your router's config and find a port-forwarding section, assign your computer a static IP and forward the above ports to that computer.
  25. Well. I think i get the gist of it... sort of. PuntoMX, if you still don't get it, PM or IM me and we can discuss our theories...
