  1. I have always thought that the imperial system was a bit odd - whereas SI uses a very easy to understand system using base 10. Imperial is base whatever-we-feel-like-for-this-unit. When I get my height measured at the doctor and they tell me I'm 70 inches tall I have to think "wait... so divide by twelve and then the remainder is..." and it's quite annoying. If they could just tell me that I'm 177.8 centimeters tall, it's easy for me to look and see that ok, I'm 1.778 meters tall. Simple dividing by 10. Then you get in to things like miles.... I can never remember what a mile is. Where the heck do 5280 feet in a mile come from? A kilometer makes perfect sense - kilo=1000; 1000 meters. Simple. Also, in science classes we always use metric - if you turn in a lab with measurements in ounces instead of mL or if you give inches instead of CM, you will lose a lot of points. The fact is, in science, even in the U.S., SI is the standard. That said, I still have to use imperial in my everyday life. How many miles from A. to B. How many pounds of apples. Etc. The one unit that everyone has the same, and the one that I think is the most convoluted is time. Since it's all based on revolutions around the sun and the rotation of the earth, etc. it's a tad harder to control - we can't change how many days are in a year. We could change the length of minutes, hours and seconds though so there could be say 100 seconds in a minute, 100 minutes in an hour and 10 hours in a day or something like that. No, I haven't actually looked at those numbers to see how it would work out. Anyhow, that's my opinion. SI pwns imperial.
  2. About 50f/10c today; blue skies. I went for a run. Fairly typical for around here.
  3. Dev is short for Software Developer. I know that. What I was asking was, what does it mean that he is a dev for MSFN? That he develops the forum software? etc.
  4. It's possible there could be some virus that oddly uses the system tray, and wants to hide itself. it's also possible that for some reason the tray isn't refreshing the icons correctly; I've had that happen every once in a while. Although this definitely sounds odd.
  5. Although I like both IE7 and WMP11 more than their predecessors, there are some enterprises that require IE6 for whatever reasons. Also, some people have found the new interfaces in both products to be annoying, confusing, or otherwise "bad". It seems to me that there's no reason why people can't just download the newer products themselves if they want them; no point forcing them on people who don't want them. That said, I'd still install SP3 since the benefits outweigh the possible losses.
  6. You should try IMing him some time. His response speed is unreal! I suspect he uses large amounts of amphetamines And yeah, he is a Mac user I've heard how superior DVORAK is for a long time but have never actually seen a DVORAK board in real life. Neat poll! I have... one of my friends uses it on his laptop; he pried off all the keys and rearranged them into dvorak. It drives me nuts having to hunt 'n peck when I use his computer. Did you know the first line does not say DVORAK as it says QWERTY on qwerty keyboards? I usually end up switching it to qwerty, and I have the keys memorized well enough to type without looking, so I type on a dvorak keyboard in qwerty. no no, that's what the dumb people always bugging you about something are for. Make 'em type something. takes 'em a long time, but they get it done and don't make you mad. P.S., new tag on your user... MSFN Dev? What exactly does that mean? Oh, and gamehead... you crazy mac user, you! iThink you're nuts!
  7. Don't do what gosh said, since then system policies, that winlogon usually likes to have there to be happy, will be removed. Only delete the HKCU ones. Also, if you can access it, you may want to check out gpedit.msc. Lots can be set (or unset) there. Finally, check out the link in my sig for a bit more info on policies and using the registry to set them. Welcome to MSFN! edit: Your profile says xp home addition, but this is under the xp x64 forum. So which OS is it running?
  8. Wow! You're fast... Is that a mac... or just a mac theme? It better not be a mac...
  9. If you've just started with typing (most people here aren't in that category though), then learn dvorak - it's supposedly better. I personally find it extremely confusing, since I'm used to QWERTY. The other downside is few people use dvorak, so you'll still have to use qwerty at the internet cafe/school/friend's house/etc.
  10. I was wondering how fast people type. I get between 80 and 95 WPM usually. take the test! I use QWERTY.
  11. Well, I discovered that dell does something to lock in their drivers, and not allow other ones. Fortunately, I was able to completely uninstall the dell driver and install the new intel one. The games still die - not BSOD's as they used to, but just "name.ext has encountered an error" doctor-watson sorts of things.
  12. In an attempt probably doomed to fail at making games work to some degree on my laptop, I downloaded the latest driver for my video card (if you can call it that). Intel is offering version 14.32.3, released 12/29/2007. I attempted to install the driver, but it gave me this error: Well, since it's a dell machine, I went to support.dell.com, put in my computer's model and went to the drivers download page. The latest driver dell has for the 945GM chipset is version 14.10.4814, released 5/14/2007. So basically, it looks like I am being somehow forced to use a driver that is more than half a year older than the current one. Does anyone have any idea about how I can get the proper drivers from Intel to install? I am going to attempt to contact Dell about the problem, but in the meantime, since it will take a while to hear back from them, I thought I'd ask here. Also, is anyone else experiencing these problems? I'm specifically having problems with Portal, and it sounds like others with the 945GM have had this issue, and Intel is working on a fix, but I'm worried that the fix won't install either, or that this was the fix.
  13. Isn't the definition of a moderator someone who moderates the forum, and wouldn't modifying posts as necessary fall under that category?
  14. Pretty much the same. Use lusrmgr.msc not the control panel applet, is my recommendation. Rename the admin to something random, then give it a big password and disable it. Then create a member of the guest group called administrator, set a startup value in its registry to run "shutdown -l" and disable the account.
  15. First look for used laptops on craigslist, etc. If they don't need to do anything intensive, see if there i a freegeek in your area. when i visited portland over the holidays i went to theirs - it's amazing! Then, i'd say look around on the major OEM sites - dell.com, hp, etc. For the 15 inch i'd say get a dell Vostro 1500, personally.
  16. yes, that is a good idea. also, you can make a custom OEMinfo file with support info. More info in the unattended area.
  17. Download tweakUI. There is a setting to turn it off.
  18. Um? Your question is not very clear, can you elaborate on what you would like to know?
  19. Ah. -slaps self on forehead- OK. P.S. Windows 95 was great - at the time - anyone currently using an MS OS that is not in the NT line is a bit crazy.
  20. OH. MY. F***ING. GOD. HOW THE HECK DID I GET OSX? -sob!!- :angrym: (I got slackware linux last time... i like that better. Darned crapple. )
  21. Doesn't really do anything, but funny none the less.
  22. Um???? XP is NOT 13 years old... Anyhow. Dell has been very, very good about providing both XP and Vista drivers. Many of their computers you can still get XP on, pre-installed. I've had a few issues with going from Vista to XP on dells, but overall it's been quite easy. Dell kept XP all along in the business section, and within months of going to vista-only in the home section, brought back XP because their customers demanded it. Just my 2 cents.
